I want to go next gen but cant afford a hd tv yet. Is it worth it or will the games not look right on a standard tv?

All I can suggest right now (even for myself) is to go for what you can afford. Even if you have a 13" TV, you can still get the console, you just won't get all the "benefits" from the bigger TV. But then again - you can always get both, one or the other later on.

Games will still look great on an SDTV.

But ya, go ahead and go next-gen. One of my friends has a mega old tv and his 360 still looks pretty good on it. Granted, you won't get the quality that you would normally get from HD but it would still be good. Although, some games (such as Gears of War) that are very detailed will be hard to make out exactly what is going on at times. IMO, go for next-gen (current-gen now, but w/e), considering past-gen production is pretty much stopping.

You lose some detail and the text can be difficult to read in some games, but they still look and play great on a standard television. The 360 has a VGA cable that will let you play games in high-definition on a computer monitor, which is another option to consider.

the only thing I found questionable about next-gen gaming on SDTV is that some games have blurry text that was difficult but not impossible to read

My friend and I always play his 360 on his 17' SDTV, and it is alright. Sometimes, I have to wince, but that is because of my eyes.

I have a 27" SDTV and 360 games look great on it. It isn't HD, but it works. Instead of buying a huge HDTV, I'd rather spend money on games.

The gameplay won't change. Just there will be a difference with worse graffics. But they will still be good though!

You still get the increased polygon counts, improved pyhsics, increased texture resolutions, various new graphical effects ect. seen in current gen games. The only difference is the display resolution. Higher resolutions look sharper because there are more pixels on the screen. I would say it's well worth it.

Games will still look good, all the shiny new effects are going to be there. Still, on an HDTV the difference will be huge.

I play all my next gen(really current gen games) on a HDTV but started with a sdtv and can honestly say that a next gen system on a sdtv is discernabbly better than a last gen system. The graphics are still more detailed and physics still rock even without a HDTV.

I must add though, even when I went from playing Halo 2 on a SD to an HD there was a major difference that made me say wow.

This came up in another forum recently. For a long list of reasons, I recently had to hook my 360 to an SDTV (I had only ever had it hooked up to an HDTV) and it looked like complete ... If I could not afford an HDTV I'd hook up your 360 to a computer monitor rather than to an SDTV, it's absolutely horrible.

Depending on your setup (like how close your PC is, or if you have your own PC) you can just use your PC monitor as an HDTV for your consoles.
