[QUOTE="MaxPred2010"]

[QUOTE="Chiefme"] I think Americans are, or atleast the regime that has been in place with the whole attack nations while under the banner of "saving the world".dramaybaz

Americans didn't fly two planes into buildings and start this **** to begin with.

And at least the Nazis weren't hiding behind a religion so we disposed of them pretty quick without any crybaby apologists getting in the way.

To be fair, this all didn't start from 9/11. All this conflict and propaganda goes back decades.

And didn't the US Gov't provide funding for the Taliban during the Russo-Afghan war? Also it was Al Qaeda that was responsible for the 9/11 attacks not the Taliban.

That quote gets thrown around way too much and I feel it veils ignorance for the most part...

The problem is not that it's a game. That's quite obvious... - the problem people have is the message that it may convey. "OMG WHAT!??????"

Yes, games like other media such as books or movies can actually convey realistic ideals despite the fact that the stories are not real!!! Crazy idea I know...

Now that we have gotten that BS out of the way we can get to some of the real questions that people should be answering:

  • Is allowing gamers to use the Taliban unpatriotic? (for Americans at least) I don't think so. This "cops and robbers" game style has been going on since forever and this is no different. Playing the bad guys in a video game certainly doesn't make me a bad guy. Does playing a dark jedi in a star wars game make you some kind of evil dude? I've never stabbed anyone while they were hiding in a locker. That's just messed up.
  • Does allowing players to use the Taliban give people the wrong idea about the Taliban? Uh no. Just because I'm using them in a game doesn't mean I support them. It's obvious that these are some bad dudes but using them in a video game isn't going to make people feel any better about them. If anything you are simply playing the game from a different viewpoint than usual. I don't see what's so wrong with that.

Instead of overthinking things you should take "Who gives a damn, its just a game." as there are more important problems to deal with than an entertainment product containing something mildly controversial.

Um it's a video game site so we discuss video games here and not global warming... Nice quote though....

Anyway, saying it's just a game as I said is just ignorant of the real problem which is the message the game may or may not send. No one cares that it's a game or a book or whatever.

I nuked away some city, produceed several major bloodbaths and I killed a pope. And that's just a small part of all the moraly questionable things (huge understatement) I did in games. Would be kinda wrong if I had second thoughts about playing a Taliban now, wouldn't it?

EDIT: That this scenario isn't fictional is not an arguement. WW2 wasn't fictional either yet noone complains about it.

Probably because that was 60 years ago. This war is today.

EDIT: Also, Perhaps I could've worded my original post better. I actually support the game being made, as it does teach our children anything because it's made for adults. ;)

I don't have a problem with it, it's just silly not to put a country or terrorist group in a game just because it comes from RL.

If someone thinks it's too serious then they shouldn't buy the damn game in the first place. In a work which retells the story of a war, both sides need to be represented fairly and equally, after all.

You're right about that point.
