GameCube is the better one, for me, for sure. A HUGE part of that has to do with the large and cumbersome N64 controller. It's so awkward and clumsy to use, and the thumbstick is far too senstive and is pure garbage anyways. Plus there's no Metroid game, on a freaking Nintendo system...WTF? Not to mention the complete lack of RPGs and shoot-em ups.
GameCube, on the other hand, has most genres of games covered. And the controller is 100 times better than the N64 controller. And it has better graphics, too boot. Not that I'm a big graphics guy, but it is a nice bonus. Plus it has Metroid Prime 1 & 2, and Resident Evil Remake & #4; some of the greatest games of that generation.
Who says those systems have the best games, btw? I've heard the majority of people cite NES or SNES as having the best Nintendo game libraries. I know N64 and GameCube have it's fans, not sayng otherwise, I just don't see the majority of fans choosing them as the best.
Even though I think Paper Mario 64>Thousand Year Door and Super Mario 64>Super Mario Sunshine, in every other way I like Gamecube better. Â Better controller, actually having Metroid games, a better Mario Kart, 2 Star Fox games instead of one, a better F-Zero game, better and more 3rd party games, and also better graphics lead to a much better system IMO.
That's a really tough one, but I'd go with the GameCube.Â
I got more out of the Nintendo 64 during the fifth generation than I did the GameCube during the 6th generation, but it's just easier going back to the GameCube games than it is the N64 games. The N64 was great for its time, but 3D graphics were just then being established and the textures were horrible and the framerates even worse. With the GameCube, it seemed to have all the great Nintendo franchises running anywhere from 30-60 fps along with great graphics. The GameCube was a really powerful little machine and the games are really playable from even today's standards. I was just playing Perfect Dark with my girlfriend, and I always talk graphics with her and she always acts like she doesn't care about graphics and only cares about gameplay, but even she was complaining about the frames per second on PD coop and she never complains about anything graphics related.Â
My top 5 favorite gaming franchises are Mario, Zelda, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid and Resident Evil.Â
GameCube is a Resident Evil fan's dream, it brings the goods with REmake, RE2, RE3, RE:CV, RE4, REZero. N64 only had RE2, which is a great version.
GameCube has Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles while the N64 has an absence of Final Fantasy.
Metal Gear Solid Twin Snakes is an amazing remake of the original Metal Gear Solid and is exclusive to GameCube. N64 has no MGS.
Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask > Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, however GameCube has the Zelda Collector's Edition which includes Zelda 1/2, Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. GameCube also has OoT Master Quest and Four Swords Adventures.
Mario is a toss up because Thousand Year Door > Paper Mario 64 but Super Mario 64 > Super Mario Sunshine.
Double Dash > Mario Kart 64 and Smash Bros Melee > Super Smash Bros 64.
Eh, this is tough, especially since I'm not a big Nintendo fan. Â I voted N64 because I have simply played much more on that console. Â With that, the N64 wasn't that big of a deal to me. Â During that generation I was all about RPGs, and let's face it, the N64 really lacked in that category!Â
And I do have a soft spot for Quest 64, I craved so much for an RPG on that console I tried my hardest to cherish that game (pretty dang tough). Â
The Gamecube has a better library of games, plain and simple. N64's library is painfully limited, not to mention vastly surpassed in sequels. Exceptions always exist, ofcourse.
Now, if we wanna talk about the PS1 vs. Gamecube, the PS1 would crush both the N64 and the Gamecube combined.

N64 is OBVIOSLY better.
Why is nobody here able to realize how overrated NGC was? Ok, to be fair, it's not something like PS1 and Atari Jaguar because those consoles are really bad.
N64 = win.  These games are why: Mario64, Waverace64, Road Rash64, Wave Race64, and Mario Kart64. Gamecube isnt quite as good, but better than the Wii (as far as library)
So, I assume you have a story to tell us of how you came to this conclusion?N64 is OBVIOSLY better.

Whoa...what???
N64 is better by a landslide.
PortCube was Nintendo's laziest consoles, the majority of games were belated ps2 ports, and 1st party software was usually rushed and disappointing. Nintendo basically coasted along on their established IPs during that whole generation putting in little effort.
The only saving graces of GameCube were Smash Bros, F-Zero, Metroid Prime, Eternal Darkness, and its controller.
N64 was about re-inventing Nintendo's games, and thinking outside of the box
GameCube was about rehashing, re-releasing, remaking, and porting.
During the N64 gen Nintendo led the way in many genre's, such as platformers, fps, and even some racers
During the GameCube gen 3rd party's completely trashed Nintendo's offerings.
The simple formula for GameCube is -
N64 + 3rd party belated ports - Rareware - 3rd party exclusives = GameCube
N64 is OBVIOSLY better.

Atari Jaguar I agree with, but calling the PSX a bad console is heresy in my opinion.Â
The only saving graces of GameCube were Smash Bros, F-Zero, Metroid Prime, Eternal Darkness, and its controller.

And Tales of Symphonia, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron 2 & 3, Zelda: Wind Waker & Twilight Princess, Starfox Assault, Mario Kart Double Dash, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, Geist, RE Remake & RE Zero, Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes, Sonic Gems Collection, Skies of Arcadia: Legends, the best version of Soul Calibur II, and WWE Day Reckoning 1 & 2.
It wasn't my favorite system last-gen, but it's still a damn fine system. And I'm glad GameStop started selling them for so cheap or I would have never discovered it.
Tie all the way. Though I SPENT more time on my Nintendo so when it comes down to it, the N64 would have my vote at gunpoint.
Thus I vote for Nintendo 64.
Edit: beeing vague because sleepy.
Nintendo 64 by a very, very wide margin. I love the Gamecube, but there are only about 50 games on the console that appeal to me, compared to about 120 on the N64. And yes, Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 64 and Perfect Dark alone make it way better imo.

Big woop, two Rogue Squadron sequels, one of which was a seriously lazy, unfinished rehash
N64 had two Rogue Squadron games when they were actually original
Zelda sequels, Mario Kart sequels, Paper Mario Sequels YAWN, if you think these make the GameCube stand out over the N64 (or any other Nintendo console for that matter) then there's something wrong with your Ninty knowledge.
Lazy remakes like Resident Evil & Twin Snakes which helped to make Nintendo realise they could get new money for old rope and sent them on a spree of remakes and re-releases as opposed to, you know, actually making new games :(
AND ON WII-U COMING TO YOUR HOMES IN 2013 IS......... THE WIND WAKER!!!!!
Lazy re-releases like Sonic Gems Collection notable?! LOL
Soul Calibur 2 is inferior to the XBox version in both graphics, and sound, all GameCube has is Link instead of Spawn, I have zero interest in either character (my favoured one would be Heihachi, but I'm still not going to claim the PS2 is best).

When in the f*** did originality matter THAT much? Just because something is original, doesn't make it good or superior. Far as I'm concerned, people would take Rogue Squadron II over the first and third one (btw, what was so unfinished about the third one? I can think of one fatal glitch that you can avoid and co-op lagging at times, but that's about it. It was still very playable, and fun in ship gameplay). What was ao lazy about REmake? It not only redid everything about the PlayStation version (replacing the graphics styIe with a different engine for one thing) and added new content (making it more than an added on prt like say, Gauntlet Dark Legacy). Not only that, why are you crediting Nintendo for it when it was CAPCOM'S decision to remake it?

Both Rogue game are high rated on MC. Zelda never has direct sequels other than the very system you are defending with majoras mask. Windwaker was its own game, and so was Twilight when it first came out, granted that Sonic gems and TP are multiplat. Twin snakes had a different CGI engine and used the MGS2 engine for a lot of the game, I would not call it a lazy rehash. You forgot about games like Metroid prime series, the definitive version of ooT, Baten Kaitos for those who liked Jrpgs along with Tales, a genre the N64 did not have granted, that's not a selling point for everyone. The first 3D world Pokemon games, 2 new Starfox experiences, Firs console Wario game, F-zero GX, Geist, Eternal Darkness, and exclusive megaman. Actually, ignore that last part, replace that with Melee. Now with that said, I still have yet to choose.Gamecube had a perfect controller at the time, hardware that didn't limit game design, and games that were pretty much perfection.
If we're comparing what they were for their time, it's not really comparable. Dawn of 3D gaming vs. Renaissance. In general though, it's a stupid question in favor of the gamecube.
Don't get me wrong though, there are plenty of ageless or near ageless games on the N64.
It helps that the GC had a much better controller then the N64. It also helps that a lot of games on the N64 have not aged well from my exprience. I love MK 64 but I can't deny that in many ways Double Dash destroys it even though MK64 is one of my favorites in the series.
I think WW and TP are better then OOT but not better then MM.
However, even back in 1996 and 97, SM64 was my least favorite Mario platformer. I'm not a fan of Sunshine but I think it's still better then SM64.
Hoenstly it comes down to whether you loved Rare back in the day.
In defense of RSIII, it has co op for RSII and dogfights.
This is just my 2 cents.
WTH? Thousand year door is a much better game than the original Paper Mario.Even though I think Paper Mario 64>Thousand Year Door and Super Mario 64>Super Mario Sunshine, in every other way I like Gamecube better. Kind of. They're both unique, but the fundamentals are much better in TTYD, yeah.
The original has more character and is more charming, the sequel is more blockbuster like. The original is my favorite.
Gotta say it... N64.
It had the better starfox, the better Zelda, the better Mario, better Mario Kart, etc (IMO)

gamecube have a wider variety of games and overall a better game library I would say. Â N64 has some true classics and masterpieces though.

It did not, however, have Metroid Prime, arguably the best game of the 2000's. Also, OoT and Majoras Mask are playable on GC, and WindWaker is underrated.

Poor troll attempt...
If Rare stayed with Nintendo we would see:
Â
- Donkey Kong Racing (the spiritual sequel to Diddy Kong Racing - often considered one of the best "cartoon" racers)
- Kameo (was eventually released on 360 but the GC version looked different, may I say more appealing)
- Perfect Dark Zero (the Cel-shaded version that would keep the qualities of the original game instead of the average 360 version)
- Banjo-Threeie (true successor to Tooie, not that "vehicle building sim" called Nuts N Bolts)
- Killer Instinct 3 (likely)
- Conker 2 (also likely - not a censored remake of BFD)
- Jet Force Gemini 2 (one can dream...)
- even more new IPs
Â
Make no mistake, the loss of Rare was a huge blow for Nintendo and undoubtly the GC sold millions of units less because of it.

Only one game was from rare on the GameCube mr.nameless and Mr.nameless here does not realize that Rare decided themselves not to put their games on the GameCube. During the buy out, MS literally allowed Rare to make games on other consoles, Nintendo hardware being the prime example. If rare wanted to release those games you listed they would have. Rare did not lose their ability to make games on other hardware until the 360.Please Log In to post.
