Legal action taken by Nintendo of America to prevent the third largest tournament of Evolution 2013 from being aired online.

As somebody who would rather see more Persona and KoF, this is great for me. Seems like a stupid move by Nintendo, however.

Nintendo's been something similar for a while now. Don't ask me why.

http://www.gamasutra.com/blogs/GregLastowka/20130517/192424/All_Your_Nintendo_Lets_Plays_Are_Belong_To_Nintendo.php

Yesterday, Gamasutra and other news sources reported on Nintendo's claiming YouTube ad revenues for videos featuring gameplay footage. Nintendo explained that "for those videos featuring Nintendo-owned content, such as images or audio of a certain length, adverts will now appear at the beginning, next to or at the end of the clips." Apparently, in practice, what this means is that certain YouTubers who were monetizing extended Nintendo gameplay videos will now lose their advertising income stream. Instead, YouTube will share those revenues with Nintendo.

Horrible, lazy, backwards company.

If I had any interest in watching I would definitely agree.

Pretty douche decision from Nintendo, I read how fans donated over 90k in support of Breast Cancer, to get the game on Evo's stage. Nintendo waits until it's days away and decides to block it, they have a lot of nerve to do such a thing now they've ruined the rest of Evo's scheduling plans.

Everyone please send Nintendo emails/tweets in hope that they reverse their decision. Here is an example:

Nintendo, please allow Super Smash Brothers Melee to be streamed at the video game tournament: EVO 2013.
We have raised over $94,000 in breast cancer research to get Super Smash Brothers Melee in EVO and were all very excited to watch this momentous event in Melee history. With this, we are all starting to think you do not care about the fans and only care about promoting your new products and extinguishing people who love your past work.
Do not expect a Wii-U purchase for me if you are going to keep treating your fans this way.

Thank you.

Nintendo changed their mind about the stream. I assume the online community and Nintendo's reaction to them was something like this

Nintendo could benefit from more exposure of their games. Blocking exposure of Evolution is something I refuse to support because it is a bad public relations decision. People want to witness the best players of popular games competing for multiple reasons.

Thank f*cking goodness. It would be terrible for the evo stream to get blocked after the competitive smash community pulled together to donate all that money to breast cancer research. I mean, it was great that they donated to breat cancer research regardless of whether the melee EVO tournament got coverage or not, as cancer is a more serious issue than a video game tournament, but it still would have been very upsetting if Nintendo had screwed over the competitive smash scene after it worked hard to support a great cause.

But again its great that Nintendo reversed their decision. And more importantly this debacle helped me remember to watch the Melee EVO tournament, because I almost forgot about it lol.

The fact that such a decision was made in the first place says a lot about what an out of touch ass backwards bunch of dunderheads run Nintendo. How can they be so amazingly dumb, and yet make such great games? As if the community wasn't burned enough by Nintendo with the LP scandal. (that was and still is seriously pathetic and shameful)

What a shocker.  Keep hitting it out of the park, Nintendo.

And I don't care that they reversed their decision.  As Ran noted, even that they try this in the first place screams volumes.  What a bunch of inept, backwards-ass clowns.  How can a company be run like this?  Get that dipshit Iwata and all the other suits out of there.   Everyone's trying to understand why they decided to try this, and it's again simple: money.  I heard they demanded a cut of profits from Evo, were denied, and pulled Smash until the uproar.  Or it could be that Evo gave in to their demands because they felt for all those who donated for breast cancer.  I give no credit here to Nintendo....not an ounce.

I think it was a short-term business decision for profit at the expense of gamer good-will and long-term benefits of more exposure.  Brilliant strategy Nintendo, keep living in your own little reality and see what good it does you.

Nintendo didn't just want to shut down the stream, they wanted Smash Brothers pulled from Evo.

People have this warm and fuzzy notion of Nintendo when in reality they are one of the most restrictive and mercenary forces in gaming and always have been.

At the height of their power Nintendo ruled gaming with an iron fist and despite no longer enjoying that status they've never really changed that attitude.

Nintendo has always reminded me of Disney, and not in a good way.

I get this visual of Reggie holding a kid upside down and shaking him violently while Iwata and Miyamoto are beneath him catching the loose change falling from his pockets. These people are pathetic.
