Grand Theft Auto 4 was given a 10 out of 10. Zelda OoT was given 10 out of 10. There is no such thing as a perfect game. The perfect game in theory is the game that everyone has to play. No problem running on the system that it came out for. No glitches. Everyone loves the game. Racing fans, shooter fans, RPG fans, everyone. The story or/and multi-player needs to be amazing. Or if it only has one. And if it has both. The game as a whole needs to be perfect. The music, the sounds, the physics, the game-play, everything has to work all at the same time together and make an experience that is better than anything else. The perfect game cant be given a good score because the fans or the general public love it. It cant be given a good score cause a review company gets paid, not saying you did. The perfect game should be what you compare every game to for its score. A perfect game has not been seen or even thought of. The perfect game should be what every developer works for but it will NEVER happen.

I ask that you re-rate every game that was given a 10 out of 10. If you think a game is truly perfect then give it what it deserves. If a perfect score is given then please re-rate every game that didn't get perfect and compare it to the perfect game cause that is what should happen. 10 out of 10 is a perfect score nothing more nothing less. This is not school 100% is not the goal. There should be no check list on what a game has and doesn't. It should be how the game feels. How it moves how it acts. What happens in it. Treat the perfect score as what it is, a symbol for a perfect game.

I wouldn't say a perfect score means a perfect game, nor should it.
A 10 should be given to those games you have no real problems with and you constantly get that overwhelming feeling in your gut telling you "oh man, this is awesome".

Unless we're talking about the scale that GS uses, the 0.5 scale; then a lot of games could score a 10 and have a few problems, or not always feel perfect; but they always have to give you that feeling.

You have to draw the line somewhere, though, otherwise you might as well not even have a 10 on the scale. In the same way, most game sites don't even bother with 5 or lower, which essentially chops their rating scale in half.

Personally, the only game in recent memory that I feel is worthy of a 100% rating is Portal. It's unique, has relatively uncomplicated gameplay (broad audience appeal), good writing, a compelling narrative and is mercifully short at two or three hours. There is no filler whatsoever.

You could get into the argument that the game is too short, or too focused on one gameplay type, but I think that would be missing the point. And I'd still say that it's one game that everyone would probably like, and one that everyone could play without too much trouble.

It is the closest thing to perfect i have seen. You need to have 10 on the scale to show that there is a limit and that limit means its perfect. if you use the 0.5 scale system then it should be rounded down. When you start putting 10 on a game people will buy it because it got 10 out of 10. I work at game crazy and we offer to let people try it before they buy it. I have offered to let people do just that and they say, "No, i dont need to i know ill like it everything is giving it a perfect score." And then that means I have to explain it to them that a perfect score doesn't make a perfect game even if it should. If you dont think a perfect score doesn't mean a perfect game then what would you give a perfect game?

We don't define a 10 as perfect. Please see our review guidelines for information, as well as our reviews blog entry from Justin Calvert.

As no game or entertainment product can be perfect, it seems odd that anyone would take issue with any kind of rating scale, since in that person's eyes, the height of that scale could never be achieved. I see many 4-star movies from Rogert Ebert and plenty of 4-star-type reviews from other publications for games, films, television shows, and music. While it is true that we have given very few 10's in our history, we do believe that receiving the highest score is attainable--and that Grand Theft Auto IV does what is necessary to receive such a score. Nor do we make apologies for giving such a score to GTA4, or to any of the four games to have previously received a 10.

I'm in the same boat, a perfect game has to be perfect, or then it shouldn't get a 10. What happens when we get the perfect game? So all the games we gave 10s earlier, that still weren't perfect, will be docked points to 9.5s, or do we give the perfect game a 11/10?

Or maybe there's room enough in the critic circle for more 10-score games? What if we allow more games into this exclusive club?

I definitely agree on the "should appeal to everyone". It could be an FPS that appeals to non-FPS fans e.g. Deus Ex, sort of.

That is one of the more illogical statements I have heard in a very long time. Even if 10/10 did mean perfect, just because a game is perfect does not mean that everyone would want to play it. A perfect RPG will never appeal to people who do not like RPGs. A perfect RTS will never appeal to people who do not like the RTS genre. Apply this to FPS, TPS, Sports, Racing, etc.

A perfect game means that it reaches the pinnacle of every aspect required for that genre. Why would someone who hates sports like a Madden game that was perfect? They wouldn't. Let it also be said, that the standard for a perfect app is one that is variable with time. Nothing can surpass the limitations of the present, yet if they succeed in perfecting themselves in every way possible than they are in a sense, perfect.

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is said to be perfect, because at its time it was without flaw. However, there are many that do not like Legend of Zelda, and to compare its graphical presentation to today's standards would show it lacking in presentation. This does not put OoT at fault, because at the time of its release it was perfect in every way imaginable. Like everything else in this world, even "perfect" changes.

Well, like the admin said, no game is ever PERFECT. Getting the highest ranking simply means that it beats all previous titles in the SAME genre(s) in all categories. If they think a game warrants that, then I don't see a problem with it. Of course if they're being superficial about it, that's not good at all.

I also think it's safe to say that this rating scale will not apply for decades to come, so something that gets a 10 today will not be as good as something that gets a 10 five years from now, that should be a given.

In the end, it's their system. If enough people disagree about that system, then the site will loose credibility and no one will care.

Obviously no game is perfect, but 10/10 means that they are almost perfect and have no noticeable flaws.

10/10 on gs means that there are no significant flaws to be found with the game. there can still be flaws, but they cant have a significant effect on the game. my problem with the gta4 review is how they judge "significant." its very shaky and its seems to vary compared to other games.
