Nocturne or Digital Devil Saga (1 & 2). I have both and after wrapping up some other games, am finally getting around to playing these. Which one should I play first and why? Is there a chronology to them? Or does it matter?

It doesn't much matter if you play Nocturne or DDS first but DEFINATELY play DDS1 before DDS2. By the time DDS2 starts the plot is so convoluted that you'll never get caught back up if you didn't play the first one.

Nocturne and the DDS games have no storyline relation to each other. DDS 1 & 2 are considerably easier than Nocturne, but don't have anywhere near the level of customisation. However, they have voice acting and better characters (IMO). I'd suggest you start with DDS 1 & 2 so you can ease yourself into Nocturne, unless you're already a JRPG veteran. Just my opinion though.

DDS definitely has a stronger story focus (more cutscenes). I can't decide which i liked more, though. Probably DDS..there are just more characters in the game and so it's got more of an emotional charge to its storyline. Nocturne and DDS pretty much play the same, although you get monster customization in Nocturne, which is cool, but i'd rather have real characters. Anyway, both (or should i say all 3?) are really good.

Nocturne came out before DDS 1 and 2. There are more skills in DDS games compared to nocturne but overall, Nocturne is harder and has much more customization in terms of your party members.

Thanks for your input everyone. Good food for thought. I'm leaning toward Nocturne first, since from what's been said here, DDS might be a bit more engaging on a few levels (story and presentation for starters), and won't be a let down if played after Nocturne. I'm kind of a character tweak freak, and have played lots of RPG's - so I'm looking forward to the depth of customization in Nocturne. Thanks again.

Play Nocturne. It's supposed to be the most awesome of the SMT games.

But be sure to play Digital Devil Saga as well.

Play DDS 1&2 first, it' less harder than nocturne, much better character development and not long as nocturne. Nocturne is insanely hard/unfair, lots of demons to recruit, multiply endings.
