@Minishdriveby: He also apologized for the comment. The woman he told it to was pushing his buttons and provoking him. He said horrible shit, so did she. He's the internet famous celebrity though, so his end of that argument was the only part that anyone ever mentions. Not to excuse him, but he actually did apologize when he calmed down and realized how poorly he behaved.
As for the topic at hand... Anita isn't a gamer. It's widely known she admits it privately to her feminist colleges and was caught on film doing it. She lies about it to the media and the public because the web series gets her more attention that when she used to report about the same thing in films. She will just use any platform she can to spread her feminist ideology, even if she has no interest in the subject she's talking about. Which she often doesn't and barely is able to pretend to. I'm not even going to click the play button or video that youtube page. She's not worth the click.
Does it matter if she doesn't personally think of herself as a "gamer"? She's clearly done research on the topic as evidence for her case and is recognized in the development community as someone with a notable cause (she was given an Ambassador Award at GDC). Whether you agree with her argument in the video or not, which right now you're forming blindly having not watched the video, it doesn't mean she should be limited or lambasted for expressing her belief based on anything other than her argument she presented. Almost all the comments have been about her and not the message; no one is discussing the content in the video, possibly because few watched it.
It should be noted that I'm not saying I agree with all of her message -- I think she made a good point and then got carried away with it in the second half of the video -- but the fact that almost everybody would rather dismiss and shit on her personally is somewhat troubling.
Considering she claimed to be a gamer in her kickstarter campaign and claimed that she noticed these issues of sexism and that was supposedly the basis for her putting together this project, it does matter. She flat out lied to scam people out of money which is dispicable.
On top of that it just shows that she had an agenda. She didn't experience this stuff and look for help to do proper research to put together a good argument, she asked for money so she could get a bunch of games and put together an argument. It completely invalidates her findings. You never go in to a scientific experiment having a conclusion already at hand. You ask a question and research to see if it is true.
There is a funny thing about free speech BTW. She has the freedom to say something, and it also means we have the freedom to call her a moron when she says stupid shit. I find it odd how people seem to forget that part and get pissy when you call people out on stuff like this. Also love how you are suddenly a sexist asshat when you call out people like Anita for saying something stupid. I feel like there might be more sexist people DEFENDING Anita than there are actually arguing against her....
I am not watching the video right now. Maybe later so I can type up my thoughts. If it is anything like her previous work then I will be pointing out the stupid shit she says.
She is the freaking PETA of the video game world. Takes a topic where there are genuine issues with genuine points to be made and makes an ass out of the movement by forcing herself to the forefront and spewing loads of stupidity. Just because you have a good cause does not mean you are right when you make your points. She needs to step aside and let people with intelligence take over the movement.
I'm not getting pissy that people are calling her a moron when she says stupid shit. I'm getting pissy when people call her a moron before listening to her stupid shit. There's the key difference.
I'm not saying I agree with everything she says either; I don't. I think she made a couple notable points in the beginning and begins to fall down the rabbit hole afterwards. And yes these videos are to further her agenda, isn't that the point? If I was going to protest against meat, I would be going to the protest to further my agenda. If I was going to protest for gay marriage, I would be going there to further my agenda. If I was going to protest about.... well I think you get the point.
Well yeah people should listen to what she says first. I have personally watched a couple videos of hers and found it to be full of drivel. I don't even find her to hit on good points and it is ridiculous because when it comes to sexism in the gamin world there are most certainly good points to be touched on.
It's a big reason she pisses me off so much. People like her do more to hurt their cause than help it. They make the movement look stupid when they shove themselves to the forefront like that and spew nonsense. I really can't imagine that with the issues of sexism in gaming she seriously manages to put together such stupid arguments in her videos, and on top of that she cherry picks terribly and she can't even use her own damn footage despite getting all that fucking money via her kickstarter campaign.
I am a big animal lover and totally believe in the idea of animal rights. I also hate PETA with an absolute passion. The jackasses make the animal rights movement look downright insane and on top of that they personally manage to kill more animals than they save. They have a perfectly valid cause yet manage to completely **** it up every step of the way.
Anita is doing the same thing. She is setting things back with her stupidity. She now has created a backlash and thanks to her ridiculous arguments the backlash is justified, albeit people definitely take things way too far. Instead of pulling people to the cause she has pushed them away.
Oh and about the agenda thing, I think she is more just a general feminist which is what I meant about her having agenda. She is not even a gamer and has no love for the gaming community. She is just trying to bring her outside views into a community she neither knows nor cares to know. That really makes her not the person who needs to be spearheading this movement.
Just like PETA, Anita needs to just step aside and let people who know the community and know what they are talking about take care of the movement. She will only do more harm than good.
