There isn't even the slimmest chance in hell Take-Two would let that happen for GTA IV. If they even think they're skirting the line, they'll immediately edit to save the "M" rating. If GTA IV gets the AO, Take-Two - and maybe even Rockstar - dies very soon. They would never risk that, so I wouldn't worry about it.

Besides, Manhunt 2 and GTA IV are very different games.

why do we have such a stupid rating system? M is for 17 year olds and up. then AO is for 18 and up. its only a 1 year difference. what kind of content could they put in an AO game that a 17 year old hasnt seen. just make 18 M and we'll all be happy. its dumb how once a game turns AO its ZOMG SUCH AN INNAPROPRIATE GAME.

If it was GTA 4, I almost think they would have to make an exception. It won't happen, but if it did, I would bet that you would see more AO games on consoles. Rockstar and Take-Two would be stupid to let it happen and miss out on all the money, but Microsoft and Sony would be just as stupid to not release the game on time if it happened to get rated AO in a way that wasn't easy to edit to an M.

It's a major difference. AO games aren't carried by several retailers (Wal-Mart included), Blockbuster won't rent it, and the game is basically treated like porn. You may not have noticed, but the difference between 17 and 18, as far as the law is concerned, is a pretty big deal. Already mentioned porn, but what about other things like, say, voting?

I think the game's environment looking blatantly identical to New York will stir up some problems.

It's no worse than te difference between an R-rated movie and an NC-17 movie. With an Rirated movie, you can get in by yourself if you're 17. If you're under 17, you can see it if accompanied by your parents. But with NC-17, you aren't allowed in even if your parents fervently demand that you see the movie.

And yes, I do agree that it's dumb how a game is deemed inappropriate only once it's gotten an AO rating. Instead, I think we should be equally criticizing all of the gornographic M rated games out there that serve no purpose other than to let them commit murder in the most gruesome ways possible withing the confines of an M-rating. I don't think that ultraviolent A) games should be more acceptable, I think that ultraviolent M games should be LESS acceptable.

Take Two probably tried to get Manhunt AO on purpose...Come on...Can they ask for any better publicity then that? They probably were expecting it to get it. I mean seriously...They have been far too quiet now about it. And now lets think about it...Release the Wii and PS2 cut versions. Then a year later Uncensored on PC.

Nah, they're very different games. From what I read, Manhunt 2 does feature some "in-your-face" instances, with the full intention of promoting media backlash. Now that this publicit stunt backfired, Rockstar are going to be very careful.

I need some explanations. I live in country where no-one cares about ESRB ranting. Could you tell me what is the difference between AO and M? And how getting an AO could block GTA IV from appering on the consoles?

It doesn't really matter if you live in a country with no rating system for videogames. If a game gets an AO rating in the US, then theplatform holdersthemselves will bar the game's release. Plus, many big retailers will refuse to stock it altogether, even if it makes it past that obstacle. In light of this, if an ambitious game gets this kind of rating, it's pretty much doomed in the US and in the most important European markets. If a company can't release the game in the US and the major European markets, then it makes no sense to release it anywhere else.

Still, GTA is the big seller and people (voters) are more aware of it because of the debacle concerning the previous games in the series (Hot Coffee etc).

You can bet *he-who-shall-remain-nameless* will be after the game no matter what sort of content it features.

I was actually thinking about this earlier.

I don't think there is any chance of it happening, but if it did, it would spell disaster for Rockstar.

The difference between a GTA and a manhunt game is astronomical. This game wont be rated AO unless it has sexual content.

If it happens I'll just go "oh snap!" and return to playing one of the tens of awesome games coming around then. If it gets delayed it will only mean the quality will be more evenly spread across the calendar.

I'm not sure that this would ever happen but if it did, you could probably just import it from another country so long as it was region free.

But seriously, I don't think that Rockstar would risk getting it's biggest money maker banned.

BMX XXX was rated M, not AO for your information.

As for waiting to see how well Manhunt 2 sells with an AO rating........it'll be a loooooooong wait......seeing as Nintendo, Sony, and MS have already stated that they will not publish a game with an AO rating, and few(if any) stores would carry it even if they did.

So yes, an AO rating is a death sentence for Manhunt 2 in it's current stage.

I'm beginning to question the creibility of the ESRB, with this Manhunt 2 fiasco.

Who runs the ESRB? Who are the people who decide if games are innapropriate for me? (Even though i'm perfectly capable of deciding that for myself...) How do they decide wether a game gets an M rating or an AO.

Can anyone have these questions answered? I'm curious.

Well the only reason San Andreas got an AO was because of the hidden hot coffee data still in the game. If Rockstar is smart they will be sure to keep stuff like that out of the final retail version of GTA IV.

It won't happen unless GTAIV has a rape minigame or something. I personally think is pure bunk that Manhunt got an AO, nothing I've read on it seemed even remotely AO worthy. Interactive killing motions with the WIImote? I never got the utter un fightable desire to shoot birds from playing DuckHunter with that lightgun...

Take-Two is releasing GTA to make money. Manhunt was sort of a failed publicity experiment as well as them 'making a point.'

GTA IV won't get an AO rating. You don't have to worry. GTA has some mature stuff, but it doesn't have the amount of violence that manhunt has. Manuhunt probably got an AO because of something that we don't know about. The ESRB still hasn't posted Manhunt 2's content descriptors on its website. Maybe it does have some nudity. GTA isn't known for having such content so again, don't worry.

What's the difference between making it so it gets a rating of M, or making it so it gets a rating of AO then changing it?

thats is the lamest thing ever. true, but very lame. You can go around killing thousands of people, even old people (any GTA game) but as soon as you add sexual content its gets a AO rating. That just shows how messed up the United States are, kill people all you want, but just don't show any boobies and its fine

If it was AO, does Microsoft have any qualms against publishing AO games? Or the PC? Seriously, I know Sony and Nintendo refuse to publish 3rd party AO rated games, but does Microsoft though?

Fanboys might not like that prospect, but there's always that avenue of hope.

And still, I doubt even GTA will be rated AO though. Aside from inclusion of certain sexual scenes though, that would probably do it.

None of the three console manufacturers allow AO rated games (though uncensored versions of games like Fahrenheit and Leisure Suit Larry were released in Europe)- such games can only be released on PC.

Right, and since the AO ratingis clearly expanding (it has never been imposed for violence in the past) that could translate into a pretty tame (relatively speaking) GTA.

I think there is too much panic over this AO rating for Manhunt 2. Just looking at the game and what you do in it, it's hard to explain why it shouldn't get an AO rating. And now, everyone and their mother is freaking out, assuming that since Manhunt 2, with blood & gore and brutal violence throughout the game, got an Adults Only rating, that every other violent game will get a similar rating.

They were no worse than God of War's sex scenes. That is ridiculous.
