Online multiplayer is an inevitable expansion of the industry, and while I personally don't play much online, I understand its benefits. At the same time, I think I understand what the topic poster is saying...but I have a slightly different take.
Thing is, there isn't much to most online multiplayer experiences. The most popular tend to be fast-action or "twitch" games - like FPSs - that don't really require much thinking. Granted, the single-player experience of these same games isn't too different, but at least there's usually a story and sometimes a puzzle or two that keeps the gamer involved. The only downside to this whole new online revolution is pretty simple, I believe- developers might sacrifice effort on a single-player campaign in order to make the online play more robust, and that's a mindset that can certainly become detrimental in the future.
We were just starting to get better written stories, better voice acting, more innovative and original single-player gameplay experiences, etc. Now, while I don't think all this progress will disappear entirely, I do believe a continued emphasis on online gaming can stunt this growth a bit. All of the aforementioned elements don't normally appear in the typical online multiplayer mode, and there are obvious reasons for that (one of which is the startling lack of attention span in many online gamers I've encountered).
Overall, I really don't think it's "ruining our enjoyment" because "enjoyment" is a very subjective term. But on the other hand, if the balance gets too far out of whack - if devs actually begin to slack off on key single-player facets in favor of focusing on online gameplay - I do think that's a problem. It's not necessarily happening at this very moment, but this industry moves at such a ridiculously rapid pace, it could quite literally start to happen by the end of the year and we might not even notice. I have noticed a significant lack of RPGs this generation already, though, and feasibly, that would be one of the first genres to suffer from the increased popularity of online gaming.
