Let me know what you guys think - even as premature as this topic sounds. Watch the video here: http://www.gamespot.com/features/this-week-in-games-july-14-2012-6387109/?tag=Topslot%3bWeekendUpdate%3bOuyaBreaksRecordsRibb

I love where Julie Uhrman is taking the industry. She is bold, and I'm so psyched we finally have a new visionary in video games - to me, kevin levine and miyamoto are the only true visionaries in the current generation of video games. What pretty much sold me on the system was the fact that the system is open to hacking, and also the assumption that minecraft is a launch title and free to play (which was on ouya's main menu screen).

The problems I can foresee happening with the system in the future is that maybe the system will have low specs (which it does), which will limit most devs. But honestly, for 99$, I would buy this system right now.

Remember to post your thoughts!

I like the idea of it, but it reeks of scam the way that the Phantom did. I would buy it if it were on shelves right now for $99. I'm not confident enough that if I spend $99 now that it won't get squandered on failed prototypes and never see any capital investment.

lol A system where hacking is welcome.

Good luck trying to get publishers on board for this thing. It's a scam, and everyone in the industry knows it.

Not everyone is buying it for that.

Hackable hardware sold at a breaking even price is a steal IMO.

Cool concept, but I'll start talking more about it when it actually becomes more then a glorified pipedream.

tha'ts what i thought as well. surprised so much money went into it. but 4 million isn't going to be enough to launch a new system. even then, a hackable one is gonna be really bad for business, the hardware makers might make dough, but then why the hell would anyone who wants to sell software (60 bucks or a lot less) on it when it's easily hackable.

I've read a lot about it, and I still don't understand the market for it. Developers already have the PC if they want to develop games on open hardware, and I don't see people buying a console to play smartphone games. Even if this whole thing weren't just some sort of pipedream, I can't really find a commercially sound niche that it fills.

The fact that you can't hack the ps3 and 360 is HORRIBLE. If it fails surely that will not be the reason.

That's a good point - the market won't be entirely directed at devs, but might actually be for hackers and the like. Indie devs maybe? I already knew they're not gonna make a profit after hearing their console proposal (which is terrible for a company that's starting from scratch), but that's why she's so bold. The concept of Ouya is an exciting prospect, even if it is currently just a pipedream. Also, for the person that mentioned 4 mill is not a enough - they don't need exactly 4 million. They'll lose money and get loans. It's a risk situation, b/c if they don't make profit they'll be in debt (and bankrupt) in the long run.

I'm starting to think that their definition of "hacking" is somewhat limited. I believe games will still need to be bought, and they may only be playable when logged onto some online server (i.e.: STEAM, diablo 3). The real hacking might come from hacking menus, and then installing custom made apps, and even emulators to get the most out of the system.

Interesting about phantom - I haven't heard about it until you guys mentioned it! It does seem phantom was ahead of its time, however - I mean, digital-download-only games? People are scared of the concept even today. I don't think Ouya will be like that - it's appealing right off the bat. Maybe not to devs, but pretty much to all other gamers. I could be wrong, but I don't think the creators are not in it for the money. If so, they wouldn't have used the term "hacking", which did probably scare off devs. I think they're in it to revolutionize the industry. For better or worse :/. Again, I could be wrong!

The fact that there are so few concrete details doesn't instill confidence, especially since it's coming out in eight months. That soon, with everything still up in the air, is setting it up for failure. That they were flagrantly lying about having Minecraft appear on the platform (Mojang hasn't confirmed that yet doesn't make them look good either. Baffles me how the Kickstarter got funded so quickly given all that.

Pretty close to the price of a new game and a half at this point. ...so even if you only get a half dozen good games on it, not too bad of a purchase

Totally agree. Even if you don't get 2+ games on the system - it's still hackable. Again, I would love to have emu's run on that thing.

Depends entirely on the games. Most indie titles, I wouldn't even play if I got them for free, much less purchase them with a $60 price tag.

And I stilld on't really understand the draw of this. You can already put emulators on your PC, why do you need a new console for that?

I'm not interested in it at all. It's cheap but you get what you pay for. I have more then enough with the 3 main consoles right now so I have no room for another system especially one with weaker hardware.

That way you can play co-op games on an emulator.

This, and it would just be more natural (and convenient). I do have a "tampered-with" wii, and it has emu's on it, and I must say it's WAY better to play in front of a TV on a couch than to play on a pc at a desk. Yeah, you can say that why don't i just connect my laptop to my tv - the thing is, I would always have to disconnect and reconnect it. It's just more convenient with a console. Playing mindcraft (that is modified to be controlled via gamepad/controller) on your couch is much more convenient than keyboard mouse (proof you can get from reviews of the 360 version). If other indie (or PC/android) games can be played from the comfort of your couch and with a better control scheme than the pc keyboard, than you got yourself a pretty big draw.

A neat idea, but i expect it to fail. Despite people throwing millions at it. Its nothing more than a tablet/phone in a box. As TB said many games would require devs to redo controlls. And honestly i would be shocked if this came to market.
