Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed, Uncharted, Zack & Wiki, plus many more games are being released. So developers are still putting out new game ideas.
But then we have MGSIV, DMC4, SMG, Project Origin...there are other sequels than that too. But they all expand the story (DMC4) or add closure to the series (MGSIV). I do agree that we may need more original ideas though, which is why I'm excited for the original games I listed above. But I'm no less excited for the sequels I listed. :)
Sequels are easier to make. The less determined and more profit driven developers know this and take full advantage.
I myself love new and creative ideas. Especially if they do things never before seen.

Agreed, and let's not also forget that a sequel often sells more then an original IP (for obvious reasons).
Anyone believe that there is to many sequels being made? Shouldn't game developers be coming up with new and inventive ideas? Also if there should be a sequel made, what is the exception?TheDanwich
SCEWW has been publishing a bunch of new IPs, like Naughty Dog's Uncharted, Insomniac's Resistance, Evolution's Motorstorm, Sucker Punch's Infamous, Media Molecule's Little Big Planet,Ninja Theory's Heavenly Sword, etc. People are always going to want sequels to their favorite franchises though, so why not?
Many sequels doesn't continue the story and often they change the gameplay mechanics around, like Final Fantasy franchise.
What they do instead is keep the soul of the franchise instead. I think there is nothing wrong with that. Just because a game is a sequel doesn't mean it doesn't have new and inventive ideas.
Also sequels such as this allows game companies to save their money on advertisement and focus more of it's investment to the game itself.
I don't mind sequels as long as it's not same game with different number like what EA and Koei likes to do with their Maddens and Dynasty Warriors.
I agree totally. Game companies don't want to take a chance with a new IP. They would rather stick to something that everybody already knows.Wasdie
Original games never get old but I see you can't complain getting HL, HL2, HL ep1, HL ep2 and whatever happens next in the HL universe eh?

There are actually a ton of very promising upcoming original titles coming out and a bunch of excellent original franchises that have released in the past 12 months....
BioShock
Crysis
Spore
World in Conflict
The Witcher
Mass Effect
Brutal Legend
Alan Wake
Assassin's Creed
Dragon Age
Sins of a Solar Empire
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
Company of Heroes
Borderlands
Darksiders: Wrath of War
Heavy Rain
....and many others.

Sequels should be made if they greatly enhance the gameplay or build on an excellent storyline from an already excellent previous game.
The only time I feel sequels are absolutely necessary is when they are needed to bring some form of resolution or closure to a storyline....for example, I really think there should be a KOTOR 3 and Beyond Good & Evil sequel, only because the endings of previous entries left the storyline open and unresolved.
