I prefer the look of the original as it's not so small and weightless, but it is tray-loading as opposed to top loading with the slim, so is there any difference in performance/reliability? Thanks

overall, the slim is the better model, its quieter, more readily available (in good condition or new), and has far, far less hardware issues then the original models (which were known for having various issues reading discs.

My fat PS2 died on me, due to a failure regarding the optical drive. The Slim works just fine and it's very reliable. The one thing I don't like about it though is the way you insert discs. Feels like you are going to break the DVD every time. The fat one of course has the ability to install a hard dive and other stuff. Don't want to go too far considering the fact that you can get moderated for talking about certain things. But overall I would recommend the Slim.

The Slim, it use less power, it is more quiet, more liable. I went though three PS2 phats because of DRE.

I think that the original is better. With the slim there is a risk with the lens.

The Slim I believe had the better performance. No disc read error messages.

Slim is better because its easier to clean loads faster, doesnt waste as much electricity, can be ran in any region because the box thing converts to 8.7v from any outlet rated from 100v to 240 with the 50/60Hz so no worries of damage, the old slims get hot but not hot enough to worry but the newer slims 79xxxx and 91xxxx cool better, can do 1080i and it has 5 more MHz than the fat. you can put a HDD to it by solder (only 71xxxx model) but risk killing it. you can use a mem card mod but i dont know if there is one.

Also, isn't it the case that if you want to play Japanese games, you can use a swap disc with the Slim, but have to physically take the console apart and mod it with the Original?

There was a higher chance of the lens acting up in the original than the PS2 slim

Almost everything had a higher failure rate in the slim. Plus a disc drive that has to open. Eventually that motor in that drive will break, it's just the way it goes. Anytime you can get something with less moving parts go for that.

dude the fat has 3 more moving parts than slim and the slim is more reliable. just because its small doesnt mean it fails easier

If that is the case how come I went through three PS2 phats and I'm still using the same slim since it's lunch?

Come on now, I meant "almost everything has a higher failure rate in the original". I know it was a typo, but does the slim have a disc drive with a motor that opens it? The slim obviously has less moving parts.

the mods dont use the original ps2 parts to work. you can however put a special chip in the fat for certain things

Many of the originals have disc read error problems or die on you. Slim is the choice to make between the two.
