As I was in line today at my local video store, a middle aged man infront of me was purchasing the DS version (forgot which one) of a pokemon game. As the employee was scanning the game, he said something like "Wow, I thought only kids played games like these". The older customer said nothing, but you could tell he was a little surprised by the employees remarks.

What do you guys think? Is pokemon really just for kids?

Personally I find that it is pushed towards the younger crowd, but I believe that age doesn't matter when it comes to video games.

Age doesn't matter I'm 23 and I still play Pokemon and I think I would play Pokemon for a really long time.

Wow, that employee really was a stuck-up jerk.

I believe that the Pokemon games can be enjoyed by gamers of all ages.

Strange thing for an employee to say. Pretty unprofessional, IMO.

But I'd say the RPG series deffinately isn't just for kids. Young children (ones who can't read yet) would have a lot of trouble figuring out what to do.

Bu some other games, like Batle rescue (or whatever it

s called) do seem to be aimed at a younger audience.

This is why I hate going to game stores such as Gamestop. Their employees are so stuck up and think they know everything :?...all the ones that know stuff are either working for a game company, or on Gamespot being awesome :P.

As for Pokemon...it can be enjoyed by anyone. Sure the show and advertising throws it out there like a "kids" game (and series), but if you break it down to the core mechanics, it's a great RPG game. And who knows? What if the older gentlemen was buying it for someone he knew? Christmas IS IN 3 DAYS, what better time to suspect he's buying to for a child and not for himself.

Maybe the employee said what he said because that's exactly what he suspected, because there is such a thing as a "sense of humour". If, as a guy, I was buying tampons or something, thats a good cue for a light hearted joke.

Pokemon always has been targeted at kids. Not to say that Pokemon is strictly for children, but I'm pretty sure that everyone gets past their Pokemon phase after age 11 or 12. That's when the kids start getting into the h4rdc0r3 stuff! :P

Well given the context of the TC gave, it sounded as if the employee was giving off a negative vibe rather than a light hearted joke. If it was intended to be a joke, it renders my entire first post to nothing.

Not entirely true, I know plenty of people who still love things they loved as kids. I think growing up with Pokemon sort of makes sure you don't drift away from it...it's that nostalgic aspect of the game. I'm not saying EVERYONE who played it as a kid still loves it today, but it's not something so rare as to say that "everyone gets past their Pokemon phase after age 11 or 12."

And what do you mean by "hardcore"? You mean as in mature right? Cause there's a whole new level of Pokemon if you play legit battles online (with set rules and such) :P.

Someone who never played a videogame before in their life will think Pokemon is nothing but a kids game, but any gamer can tell you the Pokemon games are above average and very enjoyable rpg's for anyone of any age remotely interested in games in general.

Well, when I said 'everyone' I meant generally speaking. I know that there are die-hards out there who still play and enjoy Pokemon very greatly, but it's safe to say that they're a minority.

And yes, by 'h4rdc0r3' I meant mature games.

That makes more sense then. Pokemon players aren't really a minority...not here at least. Maybe it depends on where you live, but I'm pretty sure almost my entire school plays Pokemon. Some of us are more competitve though and actually have set rules, and use strategies (opposed to spamming strong moves from Legendary Pokemon.)

Lol, the word "hardcore" gets thrown around too much so I never know what someone means when they say it :P.

Well, I'm gonna have to agree with you there, depends on where you live. I live in Bermuda, and most people my age group got over Pokemon after Ruby/Sapphire. I personally stopped after Gold/Silver.

I don't like the terms 'hardcore', 'core' or 'casual' either, but I only use them because it saves me writing an essay every time I want to reference them.

I live in Seattle, and we have a pretty mixed population here. There are a lot of us Asians up here too, so I can see why everyone likes playing Pokemon here.

I always try to refrain from using those terms because people misinterpret whenever I use them.

No, I certainly don't think Pokemon is just for kids. I'm 26 now, and last year I was playing Pokemon Diamond on the Nintendo DS. Pokemon is a great franchise for anyone.

I'm 17 years old and I bought Pokemon Platinum when it came out. It is more like nostalgia for me though. I don't think I would have got it if I hadn't of played Red and Blue versions when they came out in '98 and I was only 6 at the time.

im 23 and played like 235hrs (yeah almost 10 full days) of Diamond and have about 20hrs in Platinum after trading everything over. Really imo Pokemon isnt a kids game. Theres lots of reading, you cant just throw random pokemon into battles you have to know the strengths and weaknesses, you have to know how to follow a map for some missons, you need to know when its the right time to use evolution stones, etc.

I remember when I went to buy Pokemon Pearl I bought condoms with it to make myself feel a bit better about the purchase.

That being said, I think anyone can enjoy Pokemon.

I think a comeback of "Yeah? You're a cashier at a game store." would have been suffice.

No it is not. I don't play it anymore, but not because I think it is "kiddy", but because I lost interest in it's gameplay.

I'm sorry to disappoint but I'd have to say yes. Everytime I recall how hardcore I was with the Pokemon universe back when Red and Blue was new oh lord do I get feel embarrassed. I'd throw the "we were kids" excuse in there but I was 14 back then so I don't think the excuse would hold up.

Of course not. Games like Pokemon are a lot like the classic Disney movies in a way, aimed at kids but able to be enjoyed by anybody. I don't get the excitement playing a new Pokemon game now that I did when I was younger, but they're still very fun titles that can give me a kick of nostalgia every now and then.

People can tend to be narrow minded when it comes to things like this. For instance, an advert for Zelda: Spirit Tracks came on the telly the other day and my mum told me that "aren't you a little old to be playing that?" Well, no, I don't think I am.

Come to think of it, Pokemon has become something that's completely alien to me now. Ever since the number of Pokemon exceeded 200 (or whatever the number was during Gold/Silver), the Pokemon that I grew fond of became a rarity. I played Sapphire I didn't see any Pokemon from the older games apart from Geodude and Pikachu...

NO. Pokemon can be enjoyed by people of all ages. I love Pokemon, and I'm twenty. My dad plays, and he's fifty two. Just because something can be enjoyed by children doesn't mean that it can only be enjoyed by children.
