I'm gonna add one game to this list that is new gen. I know I might get heat for it and get told that other games that are alegacy deserve the spot. It is my personal favorite so I have to add it. It's not the end of the world and that's why there is an "Other" option because there are just so many amazing RPG's out there and only so little room for them. I added Vagrant Story because it is spoken highly of on the forums. I have never played it and I'm not sure if I really ever want to play it as it looks unappealing to me but even so I won't deny it a spot just because I have no interest in it.

I just bought Xenogears and from what I have played I really like a lot but I have to play more to see if it truely lives up to ridiculous hype it gets on Gamespot. Anyway, vote away people. If you pick the other option then write down what your favorite RPG is and explain why if you want because I'm interested to see what other RPG's are out there that I have never played.

My favorite is Lost Odyssey. I love everything about this game. Mine used to be Final Fantasy VIII.

probably Final Fantasy 7 , with games like Grandia and Panzer Dragoon Saga also being on the list.

there are also others like the other Final Fantasy games and Lunar , but thats a different matter.

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

Without it, FF7 would not have been what it is; and FF7 owes a lot to a few Squaresoft games that came before it: notably Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, and Final Fantasy IV.

And funny enough, every title mentioned here is better than FF7.

Final Fantasy whatever. Hands down my favorite franchise of all time. Too hard for me to actually pick just one. The Legend of Dragoon and Secret of Mana are up there too.

I would have to say that it's a three-way tie between Pokemon Silver, Dragon Quest VIII, and Tales of Symphonia.

I would probably go with Chrono Trigger. FFVI and Fire Emblem (the first to release on GBA in the US) are really close.

This is a tough question and if I have posted in these topics before chances are my answers have been different every time. Today I'm going to say Knights of the Old Republic. That answer is based on limiting myself to previous gen. If I were to name an all time favorite it would be a tie between Fallout 3 and New Vegas.

I'm not a huge RPG fan, but I'd probably pick Grandia as my all-time favorite. Honorable mentions are Chrono Trigger and Pokemon Crystal. If we're including current-gen games, Oblivion also makes the list.

is that the only difference? I mean obviously there are the graphical differences, but nothing besides the difficulty? I own both the Saturn and PS1 versions (Saturn has better music, PS1 has better FMVs), and the PSP, but other then the difficulty what makes the original better?

Not too much other than the difficulty/graphics. I guess for nostalgia's sake, I like the original better.

Dragon Quest III. There's so much about it that I could go on about for hours, but I'll just simply say that it's a masterpiece of a game.

Actually there are more differences than just difficulty between the Original Sega CD lunar and the PSX/Saturn versions. There are some major story differences as well....for example you know when the party leaves Saith inthe early parts of the game, and you have that scene where Luna jumps onto the ship at the last minute. Well in the Sega CD version she does not do that at all, she stays behind with Alexs folks and does not reunite with him till he returns to see Quark. Another difference too is Ghaleon is not as sympathetic, as he is portrayed in the PSX versions either. And another thing too is the final part of the game....Ghaleon actually has a final form where he turns into this demonic creature and the ending is very very short and abrupt compared to the PSX version.

TheTrueMagusX1

it is different, though Im not sure it necessarily means better.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KTVStkXSLo

here is the final boss from the Saturn version , you might want to see it just to hear the music differences between the PS1 and Saturn version.

you can see what I mean by better music on the Saturn, you will have to skip forward a little to hear the boss battle music though.

this is actually from the MPEG version which uses the VCD card for better FMVs too, but it doesnt affect the music.

'Personally I prefer the PSX version of Lunar, and thats just me. As for the Saturn, I will pass as its in Japanese, but on a technical level I am sure its better. As for the PSX, I prefer it over even the PSP version which is not a bad port, just the PSP port is ridicilously easy.

thats really the issue with the Saturn version , the language , if it was translated , it would have been the better version in every way, and the same goes for Lunar 2. the music is better on the Saturn, the FMVs are worse but in Lunar 2 Saturn the FMVs are not so bad, , they at least run full screen , unlike Lunar 1 which ran in 2/3 of the screen. in Lunar 2 the differences are even greater when it comes to music, and yes, the PSP port is easy

I can't remember too well, I think I died once in Lunar PSP , but that was about it. the game also felt shorter for some reason , the enviroments seemed smaller.

that said they looked very good, though that face lift should have been done the Saturn/PS1 port

here is Albert Odyssey on the Saturn , just to give you an idea of what I think the Lunar PS1/Saturn games could have looked like.

though Im not sure the PS1 could pull off every 2D trick in this game.

I have played all the versions of Lunar 1 and 2, sans saturn (Japanese language issue). And I have to agree with Magus that I liked the PS1 versions best...even more than the PSP remake.

Also, I just wanted to say that I thought Albert Odyssey was garbage...just very boring with a crap story and mediocre characters with little character development

I liked Albert Odyssey, its not amazing, but its a decent game, or at least I thought so. though one is true, its a good looking 2D game, hence what i meant when I said Lunar should and could have looked like this, at least the remakes.

I agree with a question this broad, a poll just does not work though like you I voted for Xenogears as it is my favorite game of all time.

I was wondering, have you played the Suikoden games on the PS1? I heard they are decent, and I thought of maybe getting the Saturn versionf Suikoden too.

Oh yeah, I have played Suikoden 1-4, and 1-3 are imo absolutley amazing. I did not like 4, but 1-3 are just freaking awesome. Suikoden 1 is a good little game, its got a good story and its pretty solid. However Suikoden 2 on the other hand is also worth tracking, and to be honest, its one of the best rpgs on that console. Its got a story about friendship and politics that just is staggeringly powerful. The two PS1 Suikodens are just freaking awesome and I think they would be worth tracking down. Also getting all 108 Stars or members of your army is also just plain fun and opens up all kinds of possibities from new party members, to new mini games. They are awesome!!

Though you asked about the PS1 games, I would also track down Suikoden 3, personally that is my favorite game in the series and has incredible replay value as well.

sadly Suikoden 3 was never released here apparently, and I can't play PS2 imports sadly

. Suikoden 1 is pretty cheap

the artwork for the Saturn version looks great though ,

though apparently its a rare title for the system.

but from what Im seeing Suikoden 2 is pretty expensive on the PS1.

Yes indeed Suikoden 2 is very very expensive, and that is a shame you never got Suikoden 3. I would say that Suikoden is quite good and if it is cheap than that would be a great purchase for you. Now I am only familiar with the PSX port which is awesome imo, but as for teh Saturn Port, it does have great artwork. I would say get the Cheaper one, and if you want the Saturn port go for it, cause Suikoden 1 is really imo a great game and I am sure its just as good as it is on the Saturn as it is on the PSX.
