Oh yeah, I have played Suikoden 1-4, and 1-3 are imo absolutley amazing. I did not like 4, but 1-3 are just freaking awesome. Suikoden 1 is a good little game, its got a good story and its pretty solid. However Suikoden 2 on the other hand is also worth tracking, and to be honest, its one of the best rpgs on that console. Its got a story about friendship and politics that just is staggeringly powerful. The two PS1 Suikodens are just freaking awesome and I think they would be worth tracking down. Also getting all 108 Stars or members of your army is also just plain fun and opens up all kinds of possibities from new party members, to new mini games. They are awesome!!

Though you asked about the PS1 games, I would also track down Suikoden 3, personally that is my favorite game in the series and has incredible replay value as well.

TheTrueMagusX1

sadly Suikoden 3 was never released here apparently, and I can't play PS2 imports sadly

. Suikoden 1 is pretty cheap

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Genso-Suikoden-Sega-Saturn-Import-/380203053273?pt=US_Vintage_Video_Games&hash=item5885de30d9

the artwork for the Saturn version looks great though ,

though apparently its a rare title for the system.

but from what Im seeing Suikoden 2 is pretty expensive on the PS1.

Yes indeed Suikoden 2 is very very expensive, and that is a shame you never got Suikoden 3. I would say that Suikoden is quite good and if it is cheap than that would be a great purchase for you. Now I am only familiar with the PSX port which is awesome imo, but as for teh Saturn Port, it does have great artwork. I would say get the Cheaper one, and if you want the Saturn port go for it, cause Suikoden 1 is really imo a great game and I am sure its just as good as it is on the Saturn as it is on the PSX.

Ive actually read a little bit, and I found the Saturn version has a few extras , as it was released 3 years later

* Sega Saturn version has a new opening movie. The opening was upgraded to be more similar to the Suikoden II opening.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qDakDL9GwQ

* Combat graphics slightly updated; magic spell graphics were slightly changed.

* Minigame content (the gambling games and stuff) slightly changed.

* Minor dialogue changes in certain events

* Colosseum added to castle. Characters can fight here for prizes or to gain levels.

* The hero can keep and raise a pet cat.

* New event involving an abduction of some sort.

not sure what any of this means, but you might be able to make sense of it

the main issue is that its Japan only.

Characters can fight here for prizes or to gain levels. * The hero can keep and raise a pet cat. I hear to unlock this feature, you must get your castle to level 4, then search a box or barrel or something near McDohl's room to find the cat inside it. So cute T^T * New event involving an abduction of some sort. A pirate kidnapping or something (I already forgot..) * Bonus Gremio scenes added featuring Gremio's wandering ghost not sure what any of this means, but you might be able to make sense of it the main issue is that its Japan only.

Actually that content makes alot of sense, and I gotta say thats alot of great extra content to the game. Yeah thats alot of added stuff to an already imo pretty beefy gameas as in the PSX version you gotta upgrade your castle and get all 108 stars, so yeah that really adds. A collosseum to your castle in itself is a big deal as far as content and the extra scenes seem to enhance the story as well. Aside from it being Japanese in your case I say go with the Saturn version than, cause I know you play alot of games in Japanese anyhow. The extra content is worth it, and to be honest you got me interested in the Saturn version of the game.

there are a few games that are well known on the PS1 but got Saturn ports at some point.

here is another one

http://image.gamespotcdn.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/0/580960_21244_front.jpg

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6uisaq_6oo

yet another one I hear people mention quite often on the PS1.

then there is obviously Lunar and Grandia too, though those were on the Saturn first.

its kind of sad , the Saturn has a pretty decent RPG library, but most of it stayed in Japan , or made it to the west....on the competing PS1.

Yeah Vandal hearts is quite good, but your right the Saturn had a lot of awesome JRPGs(Better watch it or some one might get mad at me...sam--m--my...) anyhow, thus this edition have anything extra not in the PSX version?

there seems to be very little info on the Saturn version , Im not sure if it has anything extra in it.

though Im weary of it, because if you look on the label , it say Konami Nagoya, who are the same division who did the Saturn port of Symphony of the Night, which has various issues on the Saturn, even with the extra content.

there are also games like Tactics Ogre, Langrisser, Shin Megami Tensei and others which also made it to the Saturn .

in fact I own Devil Summoner : Soul Hacker on the Saturn , though I didn't play it much sadly.

I don't understand what you mean by "I better watch it" , what do you mean?

Oh the better watch it refers to a guy on here, and who gets angry and criticizes anyone when they use the term WRPG or JRPG. Thats what I menat...So langrisser and Tactics Ogre got Saturn ports huh? Nice!

well here are most the langrisser games on the Saturn

Langrisser III Box Fronthttp://image.gamespotcdn.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/5/574215_14582_front.jpg

http://image.gamespotcdn.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/4/562834_13995_front.jpg

and Tactics Ogre

http://image.gamespotcdn.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/5/574405_13966_front.jpg

funny enough I had a look on Ebay and the Langrisser games seem to cost about £4-5 each.

yet another example to deflate that old myth that seems to pop up here that "all good Saturn games cost a small fortune" .

the funny thing is, I always post lists of good games for the Saturn which are both cheap , and found locally, without importing , but people just seem to "not see them" and continue claiming the system is expensive.

they have no issue recommending expensive PS1 games though.....

Yep its sad there is such hypcorcisy with the Saturns. You have educated me alot in the Saturn and doing so I say why not get the Langrisser games if they are so cheap!

well I found Langrisser 3 in a UK import game shop for £10, which would actually be the same as the other one , as it was from Japan (ie, shipping and possible tax)

Im not going to tell people the Saturn is the cheapest console ever, its not like the NES in the US where its 1$ a game.

at the same time, its not too expensive for most games, and alot of great games can be found for under £10.

just to prove, I had a look on Ebay UK again for a price and here it is

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/RESIDENT-EVIL-SEGA-SATURN-BOXED-COMPLETE-UK-FREEPOST-/370488067678?pt=UK_VintageComputing_RL&hash=item5642cf465e

Saturn Resident Evil £8.75

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PS-1-GAME-RESIDENT-EVIL-/220744417450?pt=UK_VintageComputing_RL&hash=item33656480aa

PS1 Resident Evil , £7.99

and Quake

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SEGA-SATURN-GAME-QUAKE-COMPLETE-/150569306418?pt=UK_VintageComputing_RL&hash=item230ea14932

Saturn Quake 9.99

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Nintendo-N64-game-Quake-boxed-complete-UK-PAL-/330527342158?pt=UK_VintageComputing_RL&hash=item4cf4f6fe4e

Quake 64 £9.95

so much for the super expensive Saturn, and in both those cases, the Saturn version is better the then the PS1/N64 version (more of a mixed bag in RE, but certainly not worse)

and some people have told me things like "why would you get a Saturn for a game like Resident Evil you get it for Shining Force 3 and Panzer Saga"

to me , thats like saying "don't bother getting a SNES unless youre going to buy Earthbound and Chrono Trigger", which are great games, but they arent the only good games

also some people then resort to telling me the PS1 versions are "better" , sometimes they are, sometimes they aren't , at least from my experience.

I did order a Saturn game from Japan recently , it should arrive soon, that game is Drift King 97

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pkmVAzlWjJ0&feature=related

you might notice it looks alot like the Tokyo Extreme Racer series from the DC and PS2, and you would be right since its made by the same people.

seems like a really good game, and it looks great too, looks no worse then many PS1 racers at the time.

and yet only the Saturn gets that attitude of "don't bother , its too expensive" , or at least its the only mainstream system to get that attitude, and I still don't understand why, maybe someone can explain it, because I really can't understand it. on a game by game pricing, I find I spend as much if not more on the N64, at ,least for boxed complete N64 games. you could argue loose cartridges cost less, but so would loose Saturn discs, its just that its rarer to find a boxed N64 game since Nintendo used this rubbish cardboard packaging which alot of kids at the time threw away. though I think the US Saturn game boxes are pretty awful too, the PAL or Japanese cases are better and sturdier in general. in case youve never seen a Saturn PAL case, its the same height as a US one, but its alot thinner and is made of a similar material as the old Mega Drive cases (or old VHS boxes) so they are pretty sturdy.

Yep the Saturn boxes the US boxes were pretty poor. its kind of funny too because the early PSX games, from around maybe the first eight months of its release had its games released in boxes just like the Saturn ones.

Exactly well said. I think what this proves is that expensive games are a universal thing, not just on one console. Also remember that alot of Expensive games are trash as well....

TheTrueMagusX1

and yet only the Saturn gets that attitude of "don't bother , its too expensive" , or at least its the only mainstream system to get that attitude, and I still don't understand why, maybe someone can explain it, because I really can't understand it. on a game by game pricing, I find I spend as much if not more on the N64, at ,least for boxed complete N64 games. you could argue loose cartridges cost less, but so would loose Saturn discs, its just that its rarer to find a boxed N64 game since Nintendo used this rubbish cardboard packaging which alot of kids at the time threw away. though I think the US Saturn game boxes are pretty awful too, the PAL or Japanese cases are better and sturdier in general. in case youve never seen a Saturn PAL case, its the same height as a US one, but its alot thinner and is made of a similar material as the old Mega Drive cases (or old VHS boxes) so they are pretty sturdy.

Yep the Saturn boxes the US boxes were pretty poor. its kind of funny too because the early PSX games, from around maybe the first eight months of its release had its games released in boxes just like the Saturn ones.

the PS1 cases here are strange, they are like normal CD cases, but thicker and sadly quite brittle.

the reason they are thicker is to accomodate manuals with multiple languages in them (for obvious reasons as its Europe)

sadly they are also brittle , fall apart very easily and are generally a pain.

sadly Sega basically copied them with the Dreamcast boxes here ,which are very similar.

http://lh3.ggpht.com/_yL3d6_3fPH4/ShD99NYayYI/AAAAAAAAAvQ/5L6WBBYL5aI/s400/IMG_5382.jpg

typical PAL DC case, and yes, over here Shenmue came in 2 boxes, each holding 2 discs, packaged inside a cardboard box, and Shenmue 2 was packaged exactly the same.

That is definetly strange packaging for the Shenmue games....

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

Without it, FF7 would not have been what it is; and FF7 owes a lot to a few Squaresoft games that came before it: notably Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, and Final Fantasy IV.

And funny enough, every title mentioned here is better than FF7.

Do yourself a favor don't post in my threads. I don't like you....at all.

Mine is Star Ocean 3. While the story is basically a throwaway, the variety in the combat system has allowed me to keep finding new ways to play the game, even after beating it over 20 times. No other RPG has given me near that much gameplay potential without getting severely bogged down with grinding requirements.

[QUOTE="Darkman2007"][QUOTE="Allicrombie"][QUOTE="Darkman2007"] is that the only difference? I mean obviously there are the graphical differences, but nothing besides the difficulty? I own both the Saturn and PS1 versions (Saturn has better music, PS1 has better FMVs), and the PSP, but other then the difficulty what makes the original better?

Not too much other than the difficulty/graphics. I guess for nostalgia's sake, I like the original better.

fair enough , I suppose Im like that with Metal Gear Solid, where I prefer the original over the Gamecube remake .

A little late but the PS1 version has some plot holes as well.

to me its more to do with the plot being outdated and newer MGS games changing and adding things things.

I actually liked the plot twist he first time I played the game. It was the first RPG I'd ever played, and I still cared about the characters even after the plot twist. After playing a pile of other RPGs I've come to realize that the entire plot in SO3 is rather average, but the plot twist still doesn't really bother me.

This being said, I've watched about 5 minutes or less of the plot for my last 15 playthroughs of the game. The gameplay is all that I really find worthwhile in it.

I see, good point. Well my reaction towards the plot twist was a little hostile than yours, but that was because I had played Star Ocean the Second Story and to me that game was brilliant more so in that level, and with the plot twist kind of....you know what it did to the wole series. In some cases I pretend the third Star Ocean is alternate story in the series, but thats pretending for my tastes....I know its cannonical officially. The gameply though in that series is killer though.

I was aiming more for a traditional RPG. I look at Kingdom Hearts as more of an Action Adventure/RPG with platforming. Not a traditional RPG. I do love KH though and itisone ofmy most favorite franchises.

Wow OldSchoolerDan has no idea what he is talking about. The thing people forget abotu FFVII is that despite if you love it or hate it, the thing that people cannot deny is how important the game is to gaming history and the effect it had on the industry. Sure whether its the greatest game of all time or the most overrated is subjective, but its importance is fact.

Voted other. I can never decide what my favorite RPG is, but among the best are (in no particular order): Morrowind, Oblivion, Pokemon Saphirre,Champions of Norrath, FF: Tactics Advance, Dragon Quest VIII, Dragon Quest IX, Dragon Age: Origins, Fallout 3, Final Fantasy III (DS Remake), and Possibly Dragon Quest VI (only a ways into it).

See why I can't pick just one?
