Klonoa (though there is the Wii-make now)
Still though I don't consider the PS1 the best console ever.
PS1 was a terrible console the tech just wasn't good enough for 3D yet IMHO
SNES is still the king by far
The warped graphics don't matter a bit. When we went from 2D to 3D the change was awe-inspiring. Never had there been such a big leap in graphics before, or since for that matter. And it wasn't the graphics themselves that were so cool (which they were for the time), but it was that leap into 3D that was so impressive, games could now be played in entirely new ways. It completely turned gaming upside down. I know that's a cliched term used to hype everything nowadays, but it literally changed everything. PS1, alongside Sega Saturn kicked the doors wide-open for the mainstream to 3D gaming. Yeah, PC did it before, and 3DO and Jaguar were already there. But it didn't really catch-on until Saturn and PS1 came-out. Nonetheless, graphics shouldn't be the top priority. Gameplay and fun-factor should be. And PS1 had incredibly fun games and invented a few genres we take for granted today. If today's generation of gaming could only be so innovative. But like I said above, even though I have all this love for PS1, I still like NES, SNES, and Genesis better. It was good, but it had a problem: horribly pixelated, warping 3D graphics. Ew!

The greatest? Na, but it is up there--perhaps in the top three. SNES is the #1 console EVER. About your list...
-Resident Evil 3 was garbage.
-Tekken 2/3 are yet to be topped in the series. Tekken 1 doesn't hold up, though.
-Spyro is an overrated pile of trash.
-Crash is a pretty sweet series.
-Twisted Metal 3 IS ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE.
-Final Fantasy 789 are just okay. 7 is especially overrated.
-I love Metal Gear Solid as much as the next person, but a lot of the gameplay doesn't hold up as well anymore.
-Castelvania was trash.
-Tony Hawk 1&2 were pretty good.
-Bushido Blade had a cool concept, but if you try playing it today, it's garbage.
-----------N64 was superior imo
-BEST 3D platformer OF ALL TIME in Mario 64. Some people even prefer Banjo or DK, though they aren't better games.
-Goldeneye and Perfect Dark of two of the best console multiplayer games ever made.
-Ocarina of Time is a better single player experience than anything being released today.
-Smash Bros on the 64 remains thebest Smash bros game to date.
-Mario Kart and DKR
-Turok
-Wave Race holds up even today.
-Blast Corps.
---------The 64 gave unique experiences.

The fact that it wasn't very powerful doesn't make it terrible.
For instance, the Wii is the least powerful console this gen. Do you consider it terrible?
Yes. I consider the Wii terrible.
I never played Silent Hill:Tony Hawk Pro skater, or Metal Gear Solid: Castlevania Symphony of the Night, those must of been amazing games. A survival Horror skateboarding game and Metal Gear Solid in Dracula's castle; I guess in this case, Sony does what Nintendon't.
I suppose they were preferable to all the blocks and flat edges on the N64.It was good, but it had a problem: horribly pixelated, warping 3D graphics. Ew!

Eh? N64 had way better graphics. Games like Donkey Kong 64, Perfect Dark and Majora's Mask wouldn't look nearly as good on the PS1 ;)

I respect your opinion. However, I feel that the PSX was superior, simply because of the massive game library.
For me personally, once Iboughtthe must have N64 games, the library quality dropped off severely. I do still play my N64 today, and some of these game are still great, especially Mario Kart; but I could literally pick up any game in my PSX library and enjoy it as much as I did then.

Put Mario 64 and the original Crash Bandicoot side-by-side and speak to me again(I know Mario 64 plays better, but that's an unrelated topic). All three of those games you mentioned used the expansion pak, giving them an unfair advantage(and I didn't think Majora's Mask look that much better than OoT without the expansion).Resident Evil 123 Tekken 123 Spyro 123 Crash Bandicoot 123 Twisted Metal 123 Final Fantasy 789T Metal Gear Solid Castlevania: Symphony of the Night Silent Hill Tony Hawk Pro Skater Bushido Blade Vib Ribbon Xenogears Thrill Kill I mean, DAMN!!!!!!762fullmetal

I'd also bring up SNES, but that has already been done.
I'm not bitter; really I'm not. I loved my N64 and Saturn but came to the conclusion that there had to be something about the Playstation that made 100 million people buy it. Running into several friends that owned the system, I asked to borrow several of their titles for the sake of reviewing; a week or so after playing the Playstation, I was ready to call it quits.
I'd take most every popular console over the PS1. Not a very good system imo.

Agreed. I'll take the Neo Geo over it. I don't know, I wasn't a big fan of it at all.

PS1 tech didn't age well it's true...but it was an amazing system for it's time. Not because of the specs but because of the games. By your logic, the Jaguar was the best console ever!Obviously this is a complete opinion thread!
For me, the PS was by far the best console because of the quality RPGs that the console had. I really enjoyed my SNES RPGs a lot, but I simply enjoyed the PS RPGs much more. This is what put the console over the top for me!
As it has been said this is nothing more than an opinion thread. And on that note!:
PS1 was a great system to be sure, but the best? Eh.....nowadays I judge some games by how well they have aged and well...that's where the PS1 stumbles. The games were great for their time, but they aren't as easy on the eyes anymore. Nes, SNES, and Genesis games while being graphically simpler have aged better, which put them above PS1 easily.

the PS1 is a different kind of system , it had its strengths ,but 2D was not one of them sadly. alot of 2D PS1 games don't look nearly as good as their Neo Geo or Saturn counterparts. Saturn was a very good 3D system too , but you wouldn't know it from many of the early games for it. it was easier to achieve decent 3D graphics on Playstation (simpler hardware meant anybody and their grandma could make a decent looking 3D game), so it was kind of the right hardware at the right time[QUOTE="tainted_lynx"][QUOTE="magnax1"]

That's exactly what it was. 3d games go by polygon count. 2d games go by hand drawn graphics. A well drawn artistic 2d game is in essence timeless because it uses drawn sprites and not polygons. The same cannot be said for 3d because poly counts go up all the time. For example, Astal for the Saturn is as beautiful today as when the day it was released. FFVII was gorgeous for its time, but now? Terrible draw distances, blocky characters, low res textures, etc etc. It's all in the 2d-3d difference.[QUOTE="tainted_lynx"][QUOTE="Darkman2007"] the PS1 is a different kind of system , it had its strengths ,but 2D was not one of them sadly. alot of 2D PS1 games don't look nearly as good as their Neo Geo or Saturn counterparts. I feel fighting games from that era , hold up much better then FPS games from that time for instance. that said, that era of video games is my personal favourite.Resident Evil 123 Tekken 123 Spyro 123 Crash Bandicoot 123 Twisted Metal 123 Final Fantasy 789T Metal Gear Solid Castlevania: Symphony of the Night Silent Hill Tony Hawk Pro Skater Bushido Blade Vib Ribbon Xenogears Thrill Kill I mean, DAMN!!!!!!762fullmetalIf it means anything the PS2 had sequels to almost every game series you mentioned and played PlayStation games, which makes it better. To me at least. Early PS3 models played almost all PS2 and PS games, so in that same sense, you could almost call it the best PlayStation. I'm thinking though, that maybe it was your first gaming system and that's why it made such a huge impact. There were many before and have been many since that time that have all been great gaming systems.
I have to jump on the SNES wagon as the #1 console. The SNES was graphically inferior to the Genesis, but it didn't matter a damn. To me, the jump from 8 bit to 16 was absolutely unbelievable. And it did have some stunning visual effects (Read: Super FX chip), complementary sound, and very good games. Whatever household games did not become big on the NES, they became big on the SNES. Approximately 1000 games were made. Many of them very, very good, and revered as all time classics. Now, the PS1 came out, and many of the games were too blocky. Extremely slow loading times (if you think PS2 was bad). Technologically, Sega Saturn was superior to the PS1, but lack of support, games, and prohibitive cost eliminated it from contention. In terms of technological advance, you could make an argument that the jump from PS1 to PS2 was the most 'eye-popping' In terms of aesthetic quality, SNES wins over PSX hands down.TerragonSixI realize this isn't system wars, but I disagree with almost everything you wrote. First off, the SNES was graphically superior to the Genesis(this coming from a Sega fanboy*points at name*). I don't think the jump from PS1 was all that eye popping. To me, the jump was gradual. From PS1 to DC was eyepopping and from DC to PS2 was minimal. However, I think the jump from SNES era to PS era was most eyepopping. Many of us tend to forget what an awesome jump that was and how awesome 3d was at the time. I remember seing Gran Turismo for PS and Bloody Roar for N64 and thinking we had reached the pinnacle of graphic achievement. It is all flat textures and muted palettes now, but it was HUGE at the time man.

Indeed it was awesome. I don't think we'll ever have as huge of a graphical jump as we did from the 16-bit era to the first 3D systems (PSX, Saturn, N64 & 3DO). Most of us gaming at the time had to change our entire gaming habits and the way we played a game because all the rules suddenly changed.

I don't know about that anymore. The jump from nes to snes was huge. I can remember being amazed at what was to come--the backs of game boxes, and overall what was delivered seemed perfect a lot of the times. The jump from snes to playstation was big as well, but you have to remember that Arcades were huge around this time as well. There were already far better looking driving and fighting games around. I can remember thinking even originally that a lot of playstation games looked bad and played clumsy. It really wasn't until Mario 64 arrived where the controls began to change. This is why N64 was a better console than the playstation, it just pushed things forward more.
