Is this normal?

I don't mind the jaggies, but everything looks so blocky. I tried out FF12, one of the best looking games on the system and it looked like crap. Widescreen, normal, etc, nothing helped.

Still thinking about getting Jak 3 though :P

component cables and lower sharpness. if it still looks bad, play it on a tube tv. they sell special 1080i tube tvs with HDMI ports and CMPT but they are so rare that they arent worth it

Yeah your best bet is component cables but I don't think Final Fantasy XII runs in 480p so not sure how much that will help. The PS2 can use either PS2 or PS3 component cables so they shouldn't be that hard to find.

most PS2 games run in 480i on a HDTV (with a component cable). only some of the very high-end games towards the end of the system's life do 480p. only shadow of the colossus comes to mind.

HDTVs don't scale very well unless you have a huge CRT HDTV. PS2 games run at 480i, so basically you're blowing up the image to 720p. It's just like watching SDTV on an HDTV, it just doesn't look good.

I know how to fix this, i had the same prolem but i totally fixed. All you have to do is... while your playing the ps2, you go to the picture setting on yout TV. so you press menu, and under picture go to size, and change it from 16:9 to 4:3. this will put 2 black bars on the sides but it will make the tv the way it was supposed to be played for ps2 which is NOt 16:9 but 4:3. i play MGS3 all the time and it looks great. so just press menu on your tv remote, picture, then size, and switch it from 16:9 to 4:3. OM me if you have any questions.

Hes not saying the aspect is messed up .... hes saying its grainy and pixelated which is due to the lack of upscaling on the PS2 to an HD source. I have a 720p HDTV and used composite for a long time and it generally got to the point of giving me a headache after a while of playing so I took the plunge and god a component cable. Wow fantastic difference even without Progressive scan. The image may not play smoother (staying in 480i) but it looks much crisper and is easier on the eyes as well.

My Wii was the same way. (And my PS2)

Turning down the sharpness helped a bunch, and component cables are needed. Look for any progressive scan options if possible.

SD signals with a HDTV never mix well. They'll always look like crap on a HDTV.

I did this already. Some PS2 games support 16:9 however, but whatever the game resolution was I matched it on my TV. That being said FF12 looked better in 4:3. The game supported 16:9 but the image was much bigger therefore looked more like crap.

Probably need a component cable or something, interlacing does seem to be the problem, I'll look into it :P

Better get a good old tube telly for your legacy platforms. Okami didn't look that bad through s-video though.

It's not just HDTV vs SD. It's also LCD vs Plasma and how well your TV upscales in general. I have my SNES, PS1, and N64 all hooked up to my HDTV via s-video and they all look great; bright colors, sharp images. But when I bought my TV, I picked the plasma because plasma handles SD signals waaay better than LCD. I also picked a Panasonic because they had very good reviews specifically around how they handle upscaling.

Not always. It depends on the the quality of the TV. Some of them display SD better than others and that's a mistake people make when buying and HDTV, they think that the only thing that matters is the HD or 1080p logo on the box.

yeah, you'll generally get the best resolution by playing standard definition games on a standard definition set. but it can be inconvenient swtiching between 2 TVs, unless you have the space.

yeah you have a good point. most video games can't even do proper 1080p. 720p is the current gaming standard - make it any sharper and it looks horrible for a game that isn't built to output at 1080 (i.e. most of them).
