I'm new to the world of RPG's and I was wanting some recomendations. I'm looking at getting Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King because it has had good reviews and it comes with a demo disk for Final Fantasy VII, which Final Fantasy is a very popular RPG and this would be a way to try it before buying it.

I also want to know if it is possible to save game data from a PS1 to a PS2 memory card. Or do PS1 memory cards work on a PS2.

PS1 cards work on PS2, but just to save PS1 data. I recommend Final Fantasy X. very good RPG with a good and deep story. I think it's only 10 bucks at gamestop.

Yes Dragon Quest is a great RPG, but it does not come with a demo disc of FFVII. The demo disc you speak of is for FFXII.

Regarding the memory card question, to my knowledge you can't save game data from a PS1 to a PS2 memory card. You can however, use PS1 memory cards on your PS2. The PS1 memory cards will only save data for PS1 games only, not PS2, so if your looking to save data while you play DQ VIII you will have to buy a PS2 memory card (unless you already have one).

I have a PS2 memory card and one of my friends game me Tekken 3 and a PS1 memory card because he no longer wanted them. Also, I meant Final Fantasy XII not VII, it was a typing error. I own The Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past and absolutly love it, although to bad zelda is only available on Nintendo products. Thanks for the responses.

Yeah Dragon Quest VIII is a great game, some people here will differ on that though. I spent 120+ wonderful hours playing the game. It should be mentioned though that Dragon Quest requires quite a lot of grinding/leveling up. As mentioned before, Final Fantasy X is a good game to start off with as well.

Even though this isn't PS2, if your starting out the RPG genre I'd say to pick up Super Mario RPG or a Paper Mario game.

Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne, and the first two Shadow Hearts games. The rest of PS2's RPG lineup is pretty mediocre, unless you count Odin Sphere (action RPG).

If graphics aren't a concern, consider looking for the Final Fantasy Anthologies. They're two disc sets, each with one game on each. They're direct ports of NES/SNES games, but playable on the PS1/PS2. Great value, as the games are long and enjoyable. I recommend Final Fantasy 6, Final Fantasy 4 and Chrono Trigger.

PS1 games: Azure Dreams is an excellent Strategy RPG, as is Final Fantasy Tactics (probably THE greatest tactical RPG, honestly). Of course FF 7, 8 & 9 are worth playing, as is Dragon Quest 7 (it might still have been called Dragon Warrior at that time). DW7 is LONG. The base quest took me about 100 hours to play through, and unless you over-level your characters, it can be a real challenge, especially towards the end.

PS2: lots of good recommendations so far... I'll add Grandia 3 and Arc the Lad to that list. (You should be able to pick up Arc the Lad at second hand stores like GameStop or EB Games for under $10 if you can find it. Under-rated, IMO).

Enjoy! Nice to see a fellow retro RPGer!

If you haven't played a RPG before, I would start off with Paper Mario or Paper Mario TTYD. If you have a GC, Tales of Symphonia is great. The Baten Kaitos series is good aswell. Get Skies of Arcadia if you don't have a Dreamcast. My favorite RPG is Grandia 2. The DC and PS2 versions are the same. I have played Grandia 3, and it isn't bad, but it is mediocre compared to the rest of the series. Kingdom Hearts is good as well.

PS1: Final Fantasy VII,VIII,IX, Grandia, Valkyrie Profile, Xenogears, Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete, Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete, Wild Arms

PS2: Final Fantasy X,XII, Persona 3,4, Rogue Galaxy, Dark Cloud 1,2, Shadow Hearts

If you want to give tactical RPGs a try Id go with Final Fantasy Tactics for PS1 and Disgaea for PS2.

Wow .. there's tons of awesome suggestions here. So many I took a few down for myself. Anyway, I just wanted to add Xenosaga Ep. 1. The second and the third are okay, but the first is easily the best of the series. Also, Shadow Hearts: Covenant is great. Haven't played any others in the series yet but that one for sure is really good. Also of course FFX. Thats all that needs to be said is just FFX. It's that good. Also if you're planning on getting Persona 3, which you should if you can cause it's simply put, the best RPG of 2007, try to find the FES version. It's got an additional quest on top of the main story. You should be able to get around 100 hours total from it. A lotta game for your buck I'd say.

Graphics are not a concern. Out of all the games and systems I own my favorite and the one I play the most is my Super Nintendo. Greatest system every in my opinion. Thanks again for all the reconmedations. I have ordered Final Fantasy X and it is on the way.

Once again I want to thank everyone again for their help. I've not been able to get into Final Fantasy X. The story is really slow and it just couldn't keep my attention. I will try again some other time to get into it. As for Dragon Quest VIII, I've found it much more enjoyable. I'm really liking it.

So, so many RPGs for the PS2...I don't think a normal person can even hope to play through them all in any reasonable amount of time. So, that being said, here's a few I think are a MUST play: Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3: FES (try to get the one with the artbook and CD, for $30 that bundle is well worth it) Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 (like 3, you haven't need to of played the previous to understand it) Rogue Galaxy Final Fantasy XII Xenosaga 1-3 Others that I think are more than worth the time: Star Ocean: Till the End of Time Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria Disgaea 1-2 Dragon Quest VII Without a doubt there are many others, but I've yet to play them at all (like some of the 'Tales of...' games look promising, Eternal Poison, Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love, etc.)

i think tactical rpg is what they call srpg. usually an rpg that is played on a grid based battle field...like a chessboard. disgaea is an example of srpg. its a nice change to the usual rpg. my first srpg was ff tactics on the ps1. its fun, like playing a chess rpg lol. start with final fantasy games on the ps2. they are a good start for you and the graphics hasnt age that much. try to play the popular rpgs first atleast with a rating of 8.5 and up. once you get addicted to rpg esp. jrpg (japanese rpg), you might wanna try the old school rpg classics, that is if your ready cause the graphics has really age. anyways the ps2 is a good place for you to get into rpg in general.
