I only just bought a PS2 for the first time back in November 2008 and have a small library of 10 games for it. I was deciding between the PS2 and PS3, but in the end decided to go with a PS2 because of the low price tag and huge library of games. Plus also, for me to buy a PS3 with added warranty, HDMI cable and extra controller makes it kind of expensive. Although I must admit that I probably would have come up with the extra cash if PS2 backwards compatibility was still part ofthe current PS3 models.
A few months after my purchase of the PS2, I have to say that I probably should have skipped it altogether and just gone with the next gen. The PS3 has a lot of good games out for it now, plus I also have a 42" 1080p plasma TV that it would have looked really good on. Plus the idea of having Blu-Ray movies would surely be a treat too. If I know me, I will probably buy one sometime this year. That's not to say I necessarily regret my PS2 purchase, the graphics do look pretty bad on an HDTV, but I have already played some very decent games on it such as Black and Medal of Honor Vanguard. I also just picked up Call of Duty World At War Final Fronts and look forward to it. Also, I've been able to re-live some childhood memories by buying Pinball Hall of Fame - The Williams Collection. Two of the included tables, Black Knight and Gorgar, are games I played in the arcade years ago.
So it's not all bad by any stretch, I'm just saying that if I could turn back time, I would have just gone with the PS3. But for someone who just has a GC and wants to broaden their gaming horizons at a good price, the PS2 will certainly fit the bill. I am scared of the Xbox 360 at any price because of the RRoD and E74 errors. My original Xbox (Holiday 2004 edition) is still going strong 4 1/2 years after my purchase. That thing was built like a tank.
