Hey, with some threads lately I noticed there seems to be a split between people who are more comfortable with Controller or Keyboard and Mouse and can't handle the other so well.

This brought the question to mind: Do you think a "Real Gamer" (well, defining this would fill a whole other thread I guess so I'll just use it as placeholder) has to be able to master both ways of entering input for a video game, or should it enough whne he's masterly good on the one but not the other? Or do you think he / she should really be able to handle ALL of them: Controller, KB&M, Kinect, Wiimote, Move...etc.

So, if you have an opinion about it, I'd like to know which and why :)

Nonsense im a "real gamer" of 30 yrs and having spent over 20 yrs using a mouse and keyboard i feel gimped when using a controller but that only because i have been hardwired into K+M controls, an FPS on a controller to me is like tying my hands behind my back and asking me to use my chin ...no way it's gonna happen, i'm even better at fighting games and racing games using a keyboard than someoone with a controller.

Who cares? Real gamers are those who choose what they want to play to have fun, there is no damn criteria, definitely not that. I much perfer a controller and a I have over 100 games in my collection, am I not a real gamer?

Nah, it's silly to make criteria like that. Personally I use KB/M for pretty much everything, then the rare time it's a fighter/third person game I'll use a 360 controller.

I have different control devices for different genres: mouse n keyboard (PC - FPS, strategy, RPG), controller(PS3/PC - sports and TPS), driving wheel (PS3/PC - racing), joystick (PC - flight sims and mech games), plus the Wiimote for the Wii.

The truth is, while I"m inclined to say yes, after playing shooters with M/KB, I really don't enjoy it on controllers anymore. It's super frustrating to be so imprecise. It's weird though- if I play a shooter on a console and only there, I can accept playing with a controller. But if I ever experience the same game on the PC, using a controller after that drives me up the wall.

No. I play any good game regardless of the controller used, but I highly prefer FPS games to use KB/M and can understand people not playing them on consoles because of it. I generally don't, but if the FPS is that good, I will.

I think it was because you said "real gamer." Threads discussing what a "real gamer" does usually don't turn out well.

And to answer your question, no I do not think being able to use all types of controllers and a KB and M makes anyone a real gamer.

No. I'm way more comfortable with a controller simply because I've used one much more frequently then a mouse and keyboard mainly because I'm not really into PC gaming all that much.

I can use both just fine, I never understood how anyone could have trouble with either. Hell, I'm right handed and as a kid I used to play with a weird left handed controller on the Sega Master System just fine, I guess I'm adaptable.

I used to be that way until maybe 5 years ago. There were so many PC FPS I wanted to play, but I just couldn't handle KB/M. However, if you were to become more interested in PC gaming, most FPS now fortunately include 360 controller support natively. It's a nice way to ease yourself into learning KB/M, if you're so inclined.

I do have a mouse where the ball is utilised with the thumb and I find that is pretty comfortable to use.

Because the OP is pretty naive. Why stop at gamepad and kb/m. The problem is there are wiimotes, move wand, kinect, fighting stick, flightstick on and on types of peripherals for gaming. Are the people who use all them well even more "real gamers" than the rest of us? No way.

Makes no difference whatsoever. It's all about practice and muscle memory

Thing is I was great on analog sticks and crap on kb/m when I started PC gaming and now it has completely flipped. Almost no time playing with my gamepad means I can't use it for aiming or anything in games anymore. The analog is too clumsy for me and I suck with it now. Only thing I can use them for is something like assassin's creed

If you're not using a controller you're just typing in the gameplay. Not for me.

Thaaaaats why I added it as another option. And how did you read out I'd be naive? My initial post is completely free of any judgement how it should be or if it defines the topic at all.

Come to think of it, you hardly need thumbs in your life, Sean: you're a PC gamer and you don't need a thumb to hold a beer mug

I've tried playing a few PC games and can't use KB&M for squat. I am however perfectly capable of using controllers, namely a Playstation controller. Hell, I'm so accustomed to it that an Xbox controller feels completely off for me, though of course I've only used one a few times. I wouldn't expect a person who uses a controller primarily to be able to handle a KB&M just as I wouldn't expect someone who mostly games on a PC to be able to pick up and play a controller with ease.

The more options to make a game accessible to more people the better, why does it even have to be an either or choice? I handle both indistinctively. Sometimes controllers are better for some genres (platforming, action adventure) while Mouse/Keyboard are better for others (FPS, RTS) It is just a matter of being adaptable and finding what works best for each person on a game by game basis.

Just because someone can use a controller and keyboard and mouse, it doesn't make them a "real gamer".

There is no way to determine what a "Real Gamer" is. I can personally handle both, but there shouldn't be a criteria as to what a real gamer is. As long as you enjoy games, then you can be called a "real" gamer.

The "real gamer" argument aside, I've never really had trouble with either. You learn to adapt if enough time is spent using whichever. Though I am incredibly rusty when it comes to PC shooters.
