I was talking with a friend about the Dreamcast and realized that we know little about the racing games for the console.

Can anyone point out some interesting?

Thanks.

I'm not really interested in racing games, so I cannot give many recommendations out of personal experience, only from what I've read. If you want to count that, there's Crazy Taxi and Crazy Taxi 2. Some fun/arcade racers are Wacky Races, Toy Racer (Europe only) and P.O.D. 2, furthermore Speed Devils, San Francisco Rush 2049, Re-Volt and Magforce Raing. Daytona USA 2001 seems to be quite popular, as well as Metropolis Street Racer. More towards simulations are F355 Challenge: Passione Rossa, Le Mans 24 Hours, Vanishing Point.

You picked the right console, the Dreamcast is a heaven for racing and fighting games.

I highly recommend you pick these up, all of them are excellent racing games:

Daytona USA 2001
San Francisco Rush 2049
Test Drive Le Mans
Metropolis Street Racer
SEGA GT
Tokyo Xtreme Racer 2
Hydro Thunder (race on water)

Then there's the classic Crazy Taxi 1 & 2, which are pure arcade entertainment, they are best played in short bursts.

Hydro Thunder remember me of a similar game on N64...Metropolis is just fantastic [playing right now].

I will try the other ones, thank you.

There are homebrew racing game for Dreamcast? [Except for Rush Rush Rally Racing released in 2009]

Wacky Racers and South Park Rally are some pretty creative racing games that are quite underrated. They both have some really interesting levels and items, never had so much fun unlocking stuff as I did on south park rally.

The best racing games I've found on the Dreamcast:

  • Crazy Taxi 1 & 2 (not really traditional racing, but going fast is absolutely required in this game and it's fun)
  • Daytona USA (superior to the Saturn version, or so I've heard, I've got to get a copy because I do like the Saturn version)
  • Metropolis Street Racing (the game that came before Project Gotham Racing in the series)
  • Sega Rally Championship 2

One thing to know about Daytona USA 2001 is that it requires some time getting used to with the standard controller. Reason for this is that it was developed with the dreamcast wheel in mind. So i'll controller harder with the standard controller, though once you get used to it, it's very playable.

As far as I know, Rush Rush Rally Racing is the only homebrew racing game with a commercial release. But I do not know the freeware homebrew area very well, so there might still be a game out there.

dear me. drea, cast is the godmother and mecca of racinggames. I don't think we will ever see a console with so many top notch and diverse racinggames. basically any racinggame on dreamcast is good and some are incredible like tokyo highway challenge 2, daytona usa, f355 challenge, msr, rush 2049, vanishing point, sega gt(some don't like it), v-rally, sega rally 2, 24 hours le mans. some are arcade and some are really simulation. something for everyone

Everyone has named some of the best.

My personal favorites are Metropolis Street Racer, almost spot on to the original Project Gotham racing.

Crazy Taxi isn't racing but is a fun driving game.

Sega Rally and Sega GT are classics as well that you'll have fun with.

vanishing point is a great racinggame that starts of a bit like arcade game and with limited cars and options but there's soooo much to unlock, which changes the whole game to a great sim. it's somewhat of a hidden racing gem imo for dreamcast

give it some time though. the game may start of somewhat dull as absolutely EVERYTHING needs to be unlocked but it goes quit quickly
