OK, I recently started playing Final Fantasy 6 on GBA.

The game is really good. The characters are extremely interesting and the story is compelling.

However, I hate the random battles thing. When you're exploring an area, you're constantly interupted by some random battle. The random battle is some monster that has nothing to with the main storyline, and a lot of times you're just pressing "A" over and over again.

I remember Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door didn't have that, and that great.

Who's with me? NO MORE RANDOM BATTLES POP-UPS IN RPG GAMES!!

It is a tad annoying when your trying to rush to save point and you keep getting attacked but it is the only way to gain expirence and make your party strong enough for the major bosses.

I like random battles. They sorta force gamers to level up their party members as a way to prepar for a boss battle before encountering one. Then again, I like level grinding.

It isn't the only way to gain experience. In Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door. There were no random battles that popped up out of nowhere. You saw the monster in front of you. If you wanted to level up, and fight..then approach them. If you wanted to explore the area, then just go around them. That's the better way, as opposed to annoying pop-up battles.

You have to remember, you're playing a remake of an older RPG. A lot of older RPGs had random battles. It's just the way they were made back then. Most newer RPGs have the option of selecting when you want to fight through sprites or monsters on the actual screen. I actually like random battles as they bring a sense of nostalgia to me. Some games just wouldn't work without random battles in my opinion, such as Pokemon.

I think there is a very good alternative to random encounters to level up. Its called side-quests! Much more difficult to do than random encounters ... but it sure does make the game less annoying!

I never had a problem with them, even in my WRPG's like morrowind, I do not want the "choice" to not battle. The whole point in these fantasy games are that mosters lurk around every corner. Besides square tried that once with onscreen choice, it was called final fantasy mystic legends. need I say more. Besides,if your playing final fantasy VI,just wait untill you get the experience egg, then you will be LOOKING for random battles, believe me.

I enjoy random battles myself. I also enjoy RPGs that don't have random battles. For me it's not that I think one is better then the other it's just that they are different approaches to RPGs.

Super Mario RPG had a really good approach to normal fights. The baddies were walking around and if you ran into one, you'd have to fight. YOu could get by all of them, but you'll probably lose to the boss because your characters have no experience.

I don´t like random encounters, one system that i like for RPGs is the one on TALES OF VESPERIA (real cool game), in wich you choose your fights 90% of the time.

Both are good to me. Since I don't hate battling or leveling, I don't hate the random ones. I do agree with one of the posts above; if this were real, would you see every enemy that's going to attack, and be able to decide whether to engage or not?

Random battles are a relic from an age of lesser technology. The reasons for their initial inception and use are long gone, but we hold onto them because JRPG developers for the most part treat innovation like southerners treat democratic presidential candidates (of the northern variety, anyway). There's no reason we shouldn't be able to at least see an enemy as it approaches.

Even if you like grinding, you have to appreciate the upside of representing the monsters on-screen. Consider games like Tales of Vesperia and Persona 4 where this feature allows you to string battles together and take on enemies all at once, rather than have to fight three separate battles for the same XP gain. It's also more atmospheric to actually be able to see the threat in front of you rather than being suddenly warped to the battle screen to find that you were "ambushed" by a 30-story monstrosity. Chrono Trigger did it right on the SNES, but most devs ignored it. Hell, I can't even get a New Game+ in my JRPGs half the time.

I wonder if maybe the reason that more developers don't do it is because they don't know how to handle that issue. Instead of figuring out how many enemies to put in an area, respawns, etc. they find it a lot easier to just fall back on random battles.

Oh no doubt about it that it's easier just to have random battles. The other alternatives are to design a bunch of different creature avatars so that a person can approach them in real time and decide if they want to attack them ( Chronotrigger, Persona 3), Try to design a realtime/psuedorealtime battle system (Morrowind/ Fallout 3) or design NPC's that send the player on little quests that involve side plots that have to be interesting but shouldn't detract from the main quest (Fallout, The Witcher, NWN) it's much easier to design a generic background, a 6 legged, polka dotted, sabretooth tiger with wings, and have them randomly pop up at a set interval with no connection to plot or anything.

Welcome to old school JRPGs! But FFVI represents the best in old school JRPGs. Looks like this is your first time playing it. It's great to see you like it. A lot of newer RPG players who are spoiled by 3D graphics usually say some bad things about older RPGs or don't even try them at all, so it's good to hear you appreciate the older clas-sics.

The ironic thing about random battles is that usually when all my party members are/almost dead I get in a battle and get crushed, or when I'm trying to get exp and it takes a while of wondering around in circles to finally start a battle. Yes, it's so annoying.

I agree with the TC, it can kill a game in some cases. I know how alot of people praised golden sun, the old gba game. However I never finished it because the random encounters just killed it for me. I think sidequests are a good way to prevent this kind of situations. Id rather do 10sidequests that let me learn/experience a little more of the gameworld im exploring then just mindlessly fighting those 'pop-up' monsters that appear at my screen.

It honestly, for me, depends on the battle system/game

If I already don't like the game/battlesystem, the constant fighting will piss me off.

People are way too picky about such minor details... anyway, I much prefer turn-based combat, I favor strategy over reflexes. But on the subject of random battles, I see no problem with it what-so-ever. I wish more games today would have random battles. I dont mind having enemies on the field for me to fight there and then but what I don't like is the whole "walk upto enemy, enter battle sequence as if random battle" to me that is just the worst.

I dont like having a limited number of enemies in a room which automatically respawn with an "exit room, re-enter room" feature, that just bugs me

Paper Mario TTYD came out in 2003, FFV6 came out in the early 90's, that's a dumb comparision when they came out in different times..

If you wanted to level up, and fight..then approach them. If you wanted to explore the area, then just go around them. That's the better way, as opposed to annoying pop-up battles.

Why are you comparing a 2003 rpg with one that came out in early 1990's? I'm sorry your point is severly flawed and has no logic behind it, the reason why there are random battles in ffvi is due the age of the game, Its not the hard to see that, if you don't like it then find something else to play...that's how the game is...

I love random just as much as non random, if you dont kill crap how are you suppose to get stronger? I think an easy solution for games that have random encounters though is to include "no encounter" items that you can equip. FF10 did that. FF3/6 did have a pretty brutal random encounter rate lol.

i like them to an extent. if you get random battles every now an then, it keeps you on your toes at all times. however, it becomes overkill (and takes you out of the game world)when you are getting one every 3 seconds of exploring.

dq8 came up with a surprisingly simple happy medium. a party member early on gets a skill that allows them to callfor a battle at will. id say that it would make for a perfect exuse to seriously lighten up the random encounter rate (sadly, dq8 didnt. it was one of my few gripes with the game).

i think that with technology nowadays, random encounters need some sort of prelude before the battle itself to make the transition more fluid. a 2-3 second long cutscene showing enemies jumping on screen and forming ranks would do the trick.

???? random encounters + long set-ups is how the industry USED to work. Havent you noticed them desperately trying to get rid of the load time for battles, some games even bragging that you go from walking around straight into battles with no interruption??? As you can see alot of people already hate the fact that their exploration is getting interrupted every couple of steps taken and then to compound the problem there are load times to start the battle. Then there are the super super impatient who dont even like attack animations lol.

At first I couldn't stand random battles but now I have no problem with them. A good example of mypersonal type of battle system is Rouge Galaxy. Random encounters with active free time. Random battles do get repetitive though so I mix rpgs up by their battle system so they don't overly become a chore to fight.

I wish random encounters would disappear entirely. That's one of the issues I have with modern JRPGs, although I haven't come across any recent games with random encounters, which tells me that devs are finally getting it. FF6 is an old game, so it's kind of expected that it would have random encounters. IMO though, I don't think random encounters should have existed in the first place. How hard was it to represent enemy encounters as on-screen sprites back in the day? Zelda 2 did it. The other thing that bugs me about random encounters is that the dungeons are empty. You're walking around in an empty room, then BAM--enemies come out of nowhere. How much cooler would DQ8's world map have been if it was populated with monsters?

^ Side quests aren't necesarily grinding if done properly.

Fallout 1 was made under the rule that every quest has to have at least 3 ways to be solved (stealth, combat, diplomacy), also it had (usually) neutral random encounters and could be completed without fighting anyone.

This is not the case for Fallout 2 and 3, though sidequests do have multiple ways to be completed.

Deus Ex also allowed great freedom (sneaking, hacking distactions) and with Shifter (or Shifter Plus) mod you where rewarded XP for this.

Whilst random battles don't REALLY bother me, I do prefer seeing enemies in the main game field. Like in Eternal Sonata or Star Ocean. That way, I can interact with them as and when needed.

2 seconds is long? its about 1 second longer than that stupid loading screen many jrpgs had last gen (screen cracks, screen flashes white light, screen ripples like water...) that added nothing to the experience. this would give every battle a place in the game world, rather than just making enemies appearing out of no where a common occurance. if people dont like it, too bad for them :P

I don't mind as long as you have an item or skill which can be set to allow you to skip all random battles when you want to, Lost Odyssey did not have this and I cba to play it again for this reason, even though I would actually like too :(. Once your lvl 99 in most jrpg you dont want to keep getting into radom battles where all you do is normal attack to win easily, its boring...

I have never heard a sngle logical argument against random battles "it interupts the exploration" no more than it would if you fought evemies on the screen... wither way battling enemies would take some time off exploring "the enemies are not there, then suddenly they a giant monster jumps out" just like when you walk into a room, you're not there, then suddenly you are "its an old technique that was used cause of technical limit" so? "I want to be able to avoid enemies" You can, you can run away... but even if you cant, then so what? you expect to be able to just waltz through without being attacked? my biggest problem with non-random nbattle games is that it annoying having to find enemies to fight them... and then have to walk off screen to make the fixed enemies respawn. I'd rather know that I can battle at any time I walk around in non-civilised areas
How much cooler would DQ8's world map have been if it was populated with monsters?King9999
ugh, that would suck

Random battles are great. Makes grinding up easier, and also gives you hopes of finding rare mobs or rare loot.
