RPG, explorationand puzzle elements were top-notch, but the action aspect was disappointing. I thought the zombies would run at you like crazy, making a frantic pace. Instead, they're slow, and this allows me to repeatedly make controlled shots at them in the head again, and again... and again... zzz... well, finally you're dead! Or I shoot him/her in the foot and run past. Or I run past without bothering him. And sometimes they group together for my convenience (shotgun/mine-thrower wink wink.)

I thought I could slowly degradelas gonados until they were simply so weak and slow they would become unfuctional. Instead, they were as healthy when I didn't shoot them yet as they are on their last breath. I thought I could shoot off the leg from the knee down and they would crawl at me. Or I could slice them in half around the belly and watch them weaken from blood loss and die wishing to kill me. If you think that this is a few generations away, you're wrong. This is what I experienced in Aliens versus Predator 2 in themarine campaign.

The original Soldier of Fortune ran with a modified Quake 2 engine. You could shoot off any appendage, even off of a corpse. There were other interesting gory deaths. In RE4, the only gory deaths are decapitations.

I don't have exceptionally high standards. Like, I got no beef with the graphics. The game is great, but way over-rated. Am I supposed to say with a sigh "f*kken survival horror game" or "f*kken console game"?

edit: You can't strafe! You call that perfect? I don't mind being unable to move while shooting but I expect to be able to strafe. The setup (L1 - ready knife, R1 - ready weapon) is good and does not need changing, butthesecond pair of shoulder buttons could have been used as so:(L2 - strafe left, R2 - strafe right)

sounds like you have the PC version, which is a no-no, and yes, you seem to expect too much.

I don't think it's over-rated at all, infact it's one of the best games i've ever played, period.

Me thinks your entitled to your own opinion, and if you think it's over-rated then fine, but I know a lot of people will disagree.

I didnt enjoy it as much as a lot of other people did, but it was still entertaining. My only real complaint with the game was the aiming. I can live with the fact that you had to stop to shoot, but with the crappy yellow nub for aiming (was playing GC version) I couldnt hit anything at all, and wasted loads of ammo. But thats more of a fault with the gamecube controller than the actual game.

I enjoyed the game immensely, but I do agree that the "not zombie" AI could have been a lot better. You didn't even have to waste bullets on them, they moved slow enough that you could knife them to death before they could grab you.

No it was not. ;) With the patch 1.1 even the PC version looks fine. Okay the console versions look better, but I like it.

It's not that the AI should have been more sophisticated. It's that they don't seem eager to kill you. In fact, they move so slowly that they seem reluctant to get near to you :D. And because they simply charge at you, sometimes surrounding you, they end up looking straight-out retarded.

And with patch 1.1 it looks as good as the ps2 version. I tried it on my standard (not hi-def, but 640x480) tv and it looked like washed-out (smeared) crap. It looks 5 times better on a high-rez monitor.

Gamespot said some grainy fog was gone on pc. In hi-rez, I don't see it. When I bumped the resolution down to 800x600, I saw it clearly, and it looked bad (I can't believe anyone ever thought it looked nice.)

As much as I try to like it, I just haven't been able to. For some reason though, people seem to really enjoy it. I don't see it. Go figure.

It doesn't do it for me too.

They lost everything that makes it RE.

The gameplay is no longer about conservation and puzzle-solving. Instead, we have 20 hours of shooting and aiming. At a certain point it becomes so automatic and repetitive, that it's like "Am I done yet?". Shoot at them. Go to them and kick. Repeat. For hours. Yawn. Ok, so there's the blind guys. They require a little more thought to deal with.

The story is a hoax. Take Leon, Ada and Wesker out, and you have some generic blueprint for any action game to work with.

So it's now an action game with a shallow story.

Some take that and love it. I however have seen too many in this genre and pass it off as yet another game.

Ok if its so brilliant why can't any of you answer what I've said in the first post? Nobody can answer to that.

edit: and i'm also had it with people who say the ps2 version is better without giving any valid reason

I think 9.6 was higher than it deserved, but it was still a great game that I would give a 9.0

I also think RE4 was overrated greatly.

It was good game, but not a great game.

The action was mostly just point and shoot. No movement involved while shooting, which just made the game really basic shooting game. Basically all you did was run, stop, shoot. Would've been better if it allowed you to shoot while you move. Not to mention because of the new more of shooter type of gameplay element, it lost a lot of survial horror feel with using more cinematographic camera angles to give that more dramatic mood.

Also the story was really weak. Really poor plot, and lack of good character personalities made the game focus on the gameplay not the plot.

RE4 did two things right which was setting the mood, and having excellent graphic. Other than that it wasn't anything special.

The PC version sucked but the Gamecube and PS2 version were steller and it's a very challenging game none the less

Anyone calling RE4 overrated doesn't really understand the RE series IMO.

RE4 in its own right was excellent. No long time RE fan could possibly say with a straight face that the series was in dire need of being completely revamped. If Code Veronica didn't send the message that the old formula had already been maxed out years ago and had long grown stale, then RE0 made it loud and clear.

Most of the people who knock it are the misguided purists who would naturally resist any change. I will not question their tastes, but RE needed something to get back onto the map in the gaming world and RE4 was a step in the right direction. RE4 is the new foundation for RE5 to build upon. It looks like RE5 will bring some of those more proactive "non-zombies" some of your are complaining about.;)

So far, I haven't heard a single validargument - not one - about how the ps2 version is better than a pc version.

The game is sooo easy! This was my first time playing with a gamepad: I expected to have a very hard time with the controls, but I breezed through the game.

And the game was praised for its gore, so I expected some nice gore. What I described has already been done, about two years before RE4.

No long time RE fan could possibly say with a straight face that the series was in dire need of being completely revamped.

MarcusAntonius

I haven't played any RE game before and they were probably many times worse than RE4. I didn't say RE4 is worse than its ancestors.

This thread reminds me of how much I love this game and hate its predecessors. If I never see a square peg in a square hole "puzzle" again it'll be too soon.
