When i was playing portal i lowered the resolution and it must have been a higher refresh rate or something but now my monitor says out of range when i try to play it. And i have unistalled and reinstalled it many times. I have ran into this before but a simple unistal and reinstal worked on battlefield 2142, but i am confused why it isnt working here...can anybody please help me out?

What type of video card do you have?

With resolution and refresh rates the general rule is, the higher the resolution the lower the refresh rate gets.

There should NEVER be an instance where lowering the resolution would cause you to have an HV frequency overrange / out of range error. This is of course if the higher resolution was confirmed to be working.

I would almost guarantee you that the refresh rate got changed accidently.

You can look in your graphics card control panel and force the refresh rate to a certain value to eliminate the offchance that a software process for that game is driving the freq out of range.

Also this should be posted in the PC hardware forum. The problem itself has very little to almost nothing to do with the game.

When you reinstall and it does the same thing ( which it will ) make sure to post in hardware. You will get more accurate and speedy responses.

Ok, this is really starting to piss me off......i have deleted the whole valve file and reinstalled everything....and i am getting really ticked off, now i can even play the game i just bought! My video card is a Nvidia 6600 LE, but i dont know how that would help. Im trying to find out how i can undo the graphic changes i made in-game, when i open portal it goes to a black screen saying out of range. Im going to sleep right now but still please, respond, I need help!!!!! :( >:(

Okay easy there buddy, it's all going to be okay. I promise!

Now here's what I want you to do:

-Open up Steam
-Got your games
-Right click on Portal and go to "Properties"
-Click on "set launch options"
-Enter this in the box: -width [pixels] -height [pixels] -refresh [Hz]
-Replace the "[pixels]" with the resolution you want, and "[Hz]" with the refresh rate you want
-Click OK and start up the game

Easy as pie! Or err...Cake!
