Looking back on everything I played last year (and I played ALOT) GTAIV is still the front runner. They did things with that game nobody else has even approached in terms of creating a viable, living world.

I would like to see them take that engine and do some sort of spinoff set in the future with a Blade Runner type world.

Regardless, I'm ready for anything from Rockstar and the GTA team.

I'm not going to bother. I already own all the GTAs and III through IV were all very similar. I got bored of GTAIV quick. If it had off-line co-op, then I may have invested more time, but I guess developers don't even bother with that idea any more.

Oh god, please, yes! More like GTA IV, I hope. I love the new and more realistic direction.BioShockOwnz

I like the new tone, but I miss Ammunation (the new gun dealers just didn't have its charm).

It may be true but I don't thank it will, as much as fans are complaining about IV I wouldn't put out another one so soon.

They can't even get a DLC pack done in 10 months when it was due to come out 3-4 months after GTAIV, so what chance is there of them making a full new GTA for release in 2009? None.

I'd like to see the next one in detriot and one of the contacts could be a CEO of a large car company. It should be pretty easy for Rockstar to satirize corrupt, money hungry automobile execs

Agreed. I've liked the vibe Detroit gives out since childhood mostly thanks to Robocop. The main character could once again be a black guy trying to elevate himself from the gutter. Could be very compelling story-wise.

Also, what do you guys think about revisiting Los Santos? Granted, Los Santos was a lot more detailed and relatable to Los Angeles than Liberty City was to New York in Grand Theft Auto III, but damn it would look hot in the current engine. Also, last year's Midnight Club was set in L.A. so they could use a lot of assets from that game making the late 2009 release very realistic. The main character could be a Mexican immigrant. Another immigrant story, you say? Well ****, that's an American cIassic right there, America was built by immigrants. Again, could be very compelling story-wise.

I hope Rockstar does what its PS2 GTA sequels did: bigger city and more customization options and items. Oh, and stop my friends from calling me to play pool all the damned time!

I would love to go back to the west coast. Los Santos was phenomenal on the PS2, and I can't imagine how great it would be with their new engine.

Honestly, Detroit is too much of a wasteland for a sandbox video game setting. It's not all that big, and what's there is fairly empty. I've lived in a detroit suburbs most of my life, and while it was interesting, it really doesn't have the draw of many other US cities.

Also, as a piece of trivia: Robocop was set in Detroit but filmed in Dallas, TX.

Yeah, and make being invited in more than just 3 seconds of looped voiceover. I mean, the strip club and picking up hooker scenes are fairly explicit, so what's the deal with the girlfriend sex? Also, I found it hilarious that strip club scenes are more explicit than the banned Hot Coffee scenes. Nice work, ESRB!

I wouldnt be surprised if we saw a new GTA this year. Like some have mentioned already, we saw Vice City only a year after GTA3. And while San Andreas took two years, Rockstar came out with Manhunt only a year after Vice City and a year before San Andreas. I guess these guys are workoholics.

I wanna see a GTA based in Chicago!

Well the greatest movie ever made was an immigrant story... so you may have something there! :)

I think it's highly unlikely, yet ironically, I really do think it could happen. If it did/does, it would not only be interesting to see how much of an improvement it would be from its predecessor(s), but how far/smoothly it transitions/moves on from GTA IV. If the next GTA does come out this year, though, it'd better not suck. Though being the hardcore R* fan I am, it's hard for me to hate anything with the phrase "Grand Theft Auto" in its title. Oh also, if this were confirmed/true, it would give me an excellent reason to erase The Godfather/Mafia II from my mind...

I could see this as being true if they use the same engine and all. Im sure they would make just a few tweaks here and there. It would be cool if it were true. I doubt it though.

You shouldn't erase Mafia II from your mind regardless of when the next Grand Theft Auto hits. Mafia is nothing like Grand Theft Auto and it's too awesome to ignore.

Rockstar announced a long time ago that their first in-house engine RAGE (Rockstar Advanced Game Engine) will be used in all their upcoming games starting with Table Tennis. It was the same scenario last gen when Rockstar used Criterion's Renderware engine for all their games (Grand Theft Auto, Midnight Club, Manhunt, The Warriors, Bully, Red Dead Revolver...).

Also, Rockstar has a rather global developing process. Rockstar North may get all the credit for Grand Theft Auto IV, but other Rockstar studios worked on that game as well including Rockstar NYC (creative input), Rockstar Toronto (combat), Rockstar San Diego (driving).

Phantom_Leo

Not bad news at all:

Rockstar vice president Dan Houser recently said to USA Today "We feel like we've only scratched the surface in terms of the depth and detail" of Liberty City.

Rockstar's VP of product development, Jeronimo Barrera, has called the episodes an "experiment." If successful, it could mean an extended stay in Liberty City before finding a new home for the series.

I actually wouldn't mind that at all. Liberty City rocks--it is, hands down, the best gameworld I've experienced--and I agree that there's so much more Rockstar can do with it.

Although I own the 360 version, I'm hoping that any further episodes after the first two are not exclusives. It would suck if the PS3 owners got stuck waiting for a proper sequel to GTA4. Are the GTA4 episodes coming to the PC version or not?

360-only so far, but I fully expect them to come to PC sooner or later. Especially since Grand Theft Auto IV requires Games for Windows Live and Microsoft announced that it's opening up the Live Marketplace for that platform as well. The GTA episodes could prove a valueable asset.

That is good to know. I know the 360 sold the most, but I hope Rockstar doesn't lock out PS3 and PC owners beyond the stuff that MS paid for.

Yeah, there's still a lot Rockstar can do with GTA IV. And that's perfectly fine as long as PS3 and PC owners get a share of the action as well.

Ahh well thats a shame, I just hope they dont pull a valve and keep releasing stupid episodic content when we could be getting a new game, I hate that crap. I hope we see a new GTA this generation at least. For now though The Lost And The Damned should be really awesome.
