OCKHOLM, SWEDEN (July 6, 2007) – SEGA® Europe, Ltd. and SEGA® of America, Inc. announced today that the highly-anticipated arcade fighting game, Virtua Fighter™ 5 for the Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, will feature an online versus mode at launch in Autumn 2007.

I'll have fun killing you all on it.

Sweet. I was going to pick up the game anyway but at least now it will give more things to do with the game now. Getting friends together to play these days isn't as easy as it was when we were younger so it's cool to know I can play a human opponent whenever I'm in the mood to play the game. I'll get quite alot of playtime out of this mode for sure.

Well I think it mostly has to do with how Microsoft's online structure is set up so unfortunately I think PS3 owners may be out of luck on this one.

How so, the PSN can do everything game wise that Xblox Live can, it doesn't have the same features but there has never been a game that can play online on the 360 and not on the PSN. This is simply Sega wanting to mkae money, they didn't want to include online mode back with the PS3 but no seeing all the companies taking the plunge and seeing the low sales they ae just going to add it in.

Yeah, my doubts about the PS3's online capabilities have gone out the window.  R6:Vegas on the PS3 has awesome online.  You can pull up your XMB friendlist in game and invite people.  Something I thought the PS3 was incapable of without new firmware.  Previously I thought that the PS3 online situation was a mess, but if Ubisoft can pull it off, everyone else needs to get on board... also if Namco is going to patch Tekken 5 and give it online, Sega damn sure needs to.

Just another reason to look at Tekken or Soul Calibur to get my fight fix.

This is fantastic news. This may finally make Virtua Fighter a more popular game. It is nearly impossible to find any Virtua Fighter game in an arcade (actually, just finding an arcade is hard enough!) so the fact that people can finally try out their skills against live opponents is a great thing indeed!

Also, some of the newer players will finally be able to see how Virtua Fighter was meant to be played and can get some experience playing better matchs.

No I didn't mean that it couldn't play online on the PS3 what I meant was that it was just easier to put online in on the 360 since Microsoft did all the "heavy lifting" so to speak.

Wish I could go waaaaay back and find the post I made many months back about how this would be the case and consistently got shot down.

Oh, and I can't wait to hear Shane Bettenhausen (from 1up and EGM) eat crow over this. I miss Luke Smith ...

Wait, what?! How come they could do it and no one else can. Weird *plays X-Files music*

It doesn't actually bring up the XMB, but you can access your XMB friendlist, it shows you who is online, and you can send invites.  It showed that you were playing Super Stardust HD, and showed that my best friend was in the middle of some Rainbow Six, and I invited him in for some co-op terrorist hunt.  Simple as that.  It makes everything else I have seen look horribly complicated.

Ok, yeah that could be the case, also Sega had more time on this version and MS probably gave them a little something. Anyway again its great to see, I have no clue how it would turn out, it could be a mess but its a first step. Damn,I guess Iwill get it usedfor like $15 years from now I guess, I am not paying for the game again unless its extremely discounted.

Actually thinking about it they could very well update the PS3 version for online play which would be a very nice gesture especially if they also include any updates to the core VF5 game in that patch.

I highly doubt MS gave them a lil something... I think sad sales actually gave them a little bit of motivation here.

But anyways...I think it was the fact MS made online so developer friendly.

I'll pass. I have a good ethernet connection. No problems in FPS. I played DoA IV online. For me, it was unplayable due to connection stability issues. In fighting games even a loss of 2-3 frames is a huge drama.

I kind of had a feeling that this would happen. The 360 does have more users and more people currently online so I thought it would be stupid for Sega to not to include it. And someone wrote on these boards that in Japan VF5 is popular at the arcades so there was no need for online play over there for the PS3. Does that mean that since the 360 doesn't sell in Japan anyway, maybe including online was for western fans? Ten million 360 owners is proof enough for that theory.

Unless you're willing to put up with potential lag, I doubt you'll have fun obliterating your opponents. And I wonder how DarkCatalyst will react to this news? Probably not so enthused, I suppose.

I'll be honest - I didn't buy VF5 for the PS3, and I wasn't planning on buying the 360 version. Offline fighters are just useless to me these days, no matter how technically competent they are.

Imagine how happy I was to see this come to pass. This looks to be the definitive version of the game, and it's a version that everyone wins with. The Frame Counters can play the offline mode like usual, and people like me, who don't have friends that can devote time away from wives and kids can now play the game and enjoy it, even if it may not be frame for frame perfect.

As much as I'd like to congratulate Sega on waking up and smelling the Folgers, it was really Namco who is responsible for this in my eyes. Had it not been for Namco going online with Tekken and Soul Calibur, VF5 would've continued to wallow in obscurity with the hardcore purists. I really believe that.

This isgreat newsfor a disenfranchised fightingfan. I open my wallet to this game.

Not only that, but it should broaden the appeal of fighters and can actually increase the popularity of tournament play, so it is a win win for both parties possibly.

I feel sorry for those loyal fans who bought a PS3 just so they could play it on day 1.

Unless they patch the PS3 version, but for some reason I doubt it.

i can finally put my own custom stick to use once again...i bought it back when hyper fighting came out assuming that there would be more fighters in the pipeline, so it's nice to know it was money well spent....

Vader, I concur with you. Then again, I was kinda expecting something like this when it was announced that VF was coming to 360, which would mean the game would run better than the PS3 version (the arcade hardware is similar to the 360).

Oh, and f**k you Sega. I want to play online too.

I don't see why its sad, Sega isn't sacrificing anything to include it, it doesn't affect the core gameplay at all.

Second that. Except I don't think SEGA were really worried about Namco. SEGA already have powerful arcade presence that online features won't shake. And in the console stakes it didn't matter that much either since VF is already quite obscure. Call it a call to common sense (or the shout of an awful lot of forumites/journalists and so on).

Don't feel too bad for me since I've been playing this amazing games since FEB. The XB360 version won't even hit until mid October.

That said, the XB360 version looks to be the best by a significant margin. I justhope the online gameplay holds up.

Do you not see the problem with what you are saying? If you want to play online then why did you buy a game that you must have known full-well didn't have online support? Voting with your wallet doesn't work if you don't stick to your guns.

Vader, I concur with you. Then again, I was kinda expecting something like this when it was announced that VF was coming to 360, which would mean the game would run better than the PS3 version (the arcade hardware is similar to the 360).

Oh, and f**k you Sega. I want to play online too.

Actually, it's the other way around. The GPU on the arcade version is made by Nvidia , making it easier to port the game to the PS3 since the RSX (PS3 GPU) was also made by them.

[QUOTE="Jonas_81"]I'll have fun killing you all on it.MysticGenie

Unless you're willing to put up with potential lag, I doubt you'll have fun obliterating your opponents. And I wonder how DarkCatalyst will react to this news? Probably not so enthused, I suppose.

Apathy indeed.

I won't be spending much, if any time playing online. The moment I get a different result than I would have offline, it will be a joke to me.

Now, if it uses something like GGPO (and assuming GGPO will actually work like it's supposed to), then I'll have Goh choking you all out.

Furthermore, I can't help but wonder about the logic here.

This game was not made to be played for fun, but rather, to be played competitively by those who ascertain fun from competition and accomplishment. Now, to sell it to people who wouldn't understand it even if it played flawlessly online, Sega is implementing online play, providing the casual outsiders with a game that they've called boring in the past, with the added bonus of pouring a vat of molasses on it.

This can't do anything good for Virtua Fighter's reputation outside its own community.

Further still, the implementation of a ranking system or W/L/W% tracking based on flawed online play would be a grave insult, making a mockery of Virtua Fighter players who are actually any damn good.

Some interview where they detail changes and online modes, found this on neogaf:

YT: It features the following 5 network modes.

1. Human vs human online battle using the VS Mode and Xbox Live.
2. Ranking of the above online battle.
3. "Score Attack" Ranking in ARCADE Mode.
4. "Clear Time" Ranking in ARCADE Mode.
5. "Clear Time" Ranking in DOJO Mode.

YT: There are so many differences, so I have listed the main updates and changes from the PS3 version:

・ Addition of Online Versus Mode
・ Addition of rank that only appears online
・ Support voice chats
・ Addition of online rankings
・ Ranking clip data (replays) can be browsed
・ More CPUs and balance adjustment in Quest Mode
・ More items to equip on the characters
・ Enhanced performance in DOJO Mode
・ Realized battles played by carrying in save data to VS Mode [the game will track your win/loss stats in versus mode, unlike the PS3 version]
・ Support controller vibration
・ Support analog stick
・ Additional recording of the commentary voice
・ Addition of commentary feature on EU version
・ Support Achievements and rich presence
・ Support downloading contents in the marketplace
・ Support Xbox 360 antaliasing

As you can see, the Xbox 360 version has so many new features that it could be considered as a completely new product.dvader654

Thats a lot of stuff.

They might as well just attach the Evo name on to it... They added in more content in this one then VF4 was to 5:lol:
