Okay, don't get me wrong here. I'm 26 and I too curse as much as a sailor sometimes.

With that out in the open, I bought and downloaded BF1943 for the PS3 last night (a glorious mistake from the start). I figured hell, I liked theother BF games. What could be wrong? BF1943 got good reviews across the board. Rated teen. Seems like a wholesome, WW2 shooter experience.Lock and load I guess. The whole "having to download another EA game to even get Battlefield 1943 to go online"thing aside, which took about a full hour to figure out and bypass. I was already pretty annoyed. Oh, but I was in for a treat. I get into Battlefield, Guadalcanal, and the following conversation takes place.

------

Random Player 1: "Hey, can anyone (expletive deleted) hear me?"

RP1: "Hello? Can anyone (expletive deleted) hear me?"

RP1: "Seriously, I've been on this game ten minutes now and no one is (expletive deleted) talking."

No one says anything. Few minutes pass.

RP1: "CAN ANYONE (expletive deleted) HEAR ME?"

Random Player 2: "Yeah,I can hear you now. The mic system is borked in this game. No one can really hear anyone. It's best if you just don't try to communicate over coms. Just fight."

RP1: "Yeah, I've been (expletive deleted) talking for the past twenty or so minutes. This is the first time I've heard anyone talk in this (expletive deleted) game."

Random Player 3: "Yeah, this game (expletive deleted) sucks donkey (expletive deleted)."

RP1: "No (expletive deleted) kidding. They need to add some new (expletive deleted) maps."

RP3: "Yeah, I'm getting tired of playing 3 (expletive deleted) maps over and over."

RP1: "It's pretty (expletive deleted) ridiculous."

Yet, they continue to play while they air how much they dislike the game. Same thing next match

RP1: "Can anyone (expletive deleted) hear me?"

-----

I enjoyed the hell out of Grand Theft Auto 4, etc. Even the language fit. I couldn't take much more than a few random maps of this. Obviously the PS3 mic and sound system for this game is screwed up. Obviously.

Somehow, BF1943 just pissed me off to no end, having to listen to a bunch of kids curse over and over again. I felt like my ears were being sound-(expletive deleted) after a few minutes. How can the ESRB possibly rate any game Teen or lower these days if it's going to be online if people on these servers are going to be talking like that? I just don't get it.

Parents, raise your kids better. This current generation? Mine too for that matter. They both suck.

The whole point I'm trying to make is I immediately uninstalled BF1943, and popped in inFAMOUS, because let's face it, inFAMOUS is fun and it doesn't happen to (expletive deleted) my ears.

Once upon a time I would've attempted to defend the younglings and place the blame at the feet of the internet and general online interaction (there was a very amusing red vs blue video about the internet and the real world, google it) and it's strange ability to attract filth of all kinds. However, in my ever growing cynicism I can't do this any more and I agree entirely with your point of view. Perhaps PEGI and ELSPA will step up once their age rating system is formally made into law (which is what it looks like is going to happen).

Yeah, and sadly I think of the kids whos parents raised them right and didn't let them waste their time away on internet. They don't curse, disobey, etc. Just a good ol fashion kid that's grown up playing Mario, withsticks, etc. Lets say they finally hit 13 and ask mom and dad to buy them this Teen rated game. And they get online and listen to this?

If I were a parent, which I will be soon, I would be infuriated. Not necessarily at the system, but at the other people online. People my age or slightly younger, cursing like this?I could tell the people online in this instance were probably between 15-20, but still.

I mean, I suppose you can look at shows like The Hills and know exactly where this society is headed. A shame, really.

Im 26 as well and I curse but not that much and I personally could care less. Kids will be kids and if they are going to cuss they are certainly going to do it on a video game. It doesnt really matter they are just words.

These type of people just curse so they sound cool and mature in front of their peers, though they only happen to do the opposite thing. Go to Video Only, you'll understand what I mean. (SIR, CALM THE *censor* DOWN.) But I say the Xbox Live community has many more, worse moments.

Exactly. The rating system can't take into account what some people might say. Just because everyone possesses the ability to play doesn't mean everyone will. The ratings can only evaluate what is actually in the game. What about if you go to a friend's house to play, and he drops the f-bomb after every other word? Should the rating system take that into account? No. Those planning to take games online have to be aware that the possibility exists of running into foul language.

You're lucky, I haven't heard anyone talk in the 100+ games I've played. Still it's a great game I find. It kept me busy until Fat Princess came out.

Welcome to the internet. If you can't take the heat, I suggest you

A. only play online games with friends

B. mute players that offend you

C. unplug the mic

It really doesn't bother me when people use expletives, but if it did, there are some very easy (common sense) solutions.

Same thing happens when I say Pong/ Pac-Man/ Asteroids/ Space Invaders etc sucks. The old school will come and out and complain. Think about this generation of youngsters who praise the aforementioned games in 10 or 20 years- they'll say things like "remember Bioshock? I miss the good old days.." About the youngins spouting nonsense over the mic, just remember what kind of kid you were or your friends. Happened last year and will continue this year, as long as online play is unregulated.

Why do teens always have to be the scapegoats during online interactions? You've never heard adults act just as immature while playing online. ESRB disclaimers all say, "Online interactions not rated."

I have put in close to 50 hours into Battlefield 1943 and have yet to experience any sort of cussing or ****ing or moaning about.

You cannot generalize the entire current generation of gamers based on your single experience with a-holes.

Besides, online games have had this problem since they started having voice chat. It's always been like this. It's actually been pretty ok this gen for me compared to last gen. Socom last gen had the worst trash talking monkeys I've ever played against and so did most of the sports games I played online last gen. I've put in closed to a 500 hours into five different PS3 online games, and the only time I actually really got upset at someone was last month during the Uncharted 2 beta where this one kid kept crying like a little girl everytime I killed him, and personally insulted me everytime he got me. I had two choices, either quit out or keep killing that little prick I chose to keep kiilling him, destroying his little ego and any self respect he had for himself. Point is, you always have a choice to quit out and find a different match. I chose to stick because I loved hearing him cry like a little ****, you apparently didnt bother quitting the match even though you were getting ear (expletive deleted). So it's really your fault.

I tend to just mute everyone when i play FPS except for people i actually know, it's much more fun that way and i get far less abuse or people singing. Having said that though i have met some great people online some of which i have met out in the real world since, there will always be jerks and nicce people, such is the way of life.

Plug the headset in, then mute the mic, turn the volume all the way down, and set it aside. It's what has made Xbox Live tolerable, and even, dare I say it, enjoyable for me. :)

Or you can just start an XBL party. In which case you will never hear anyone but those that you want to. I'm assuming he's playing the PSN version.

I hate it when people leave their mics on for no reason. Usually there will be one person in a Skate 2 match that will have a mic, they don't say anything, but you can hear them when they say things like "aw man, I lost." You can hear their music playing, or their baby brother crying in the background. It's so annoying, if there's no one to talk to, turn off your mic.

Some people don't realise that their mic doesn't work, I turn mine on to let them know, I say: "(name), your mic isn't working, all I can hear is static." They'll say something else, I can barely hear a voice but I can't tell what it's sayingand they'll refuse to turn it off. I know my mic isn't broken because I've talked to people with it before.

Nice post, but I'd say it's only gonna get worse as kids start getting more freedom with each passing generation. With new technologies being introduced every year, kids are able to escape their parents (who have little tech-knowledge usually) and pick up new language that they wouldn't hear at home (usually).

I hate people who talk non stop into mics, just shut the.... up, I don't care what you have to say just play the game and if you want to talk strategy go for it, I don't care about you and your friends totally pwning, take it elsewhere. Also, so many children, so, so many children. It's absurd how many kids are playing MATURE games, and it's annoying because they are the ones talking all the time, ugh! I'm not one of those anti kids playing mature games but those horror stories about kids you hear on XBL aren't far from the truth.

My point exactly. I have a 6 year old myself and I keep a very close eye on what she plays and she never plays online. If and when I decide to let her do so when she's older, the minute I hear a foul word come out of her mouth, it's a wrap. That being said, a lot of the games they release now (especially shooters) have language just as bad or worse than anything I hear over that little headset. But hey, if you're worried that your sweet and "wholesome WWII shooter experience" of fighting and mass killing will be ruined by the "F" word, just remove your headset.

I haven't played any newer games online yet, just some of the older ones like Counter-Strike 1.6 and I agree with youu 100% I am nearing my mid 20s and I just mute voice chat usually. I don't play online a lot though because honestly, I feel im too old for it. I just stick to the single player games these days mostly. Too many kids online that tell ridiculous stupid juvenile jokes that aren't really funny and are quite annoying really.
