Gothix, a Dragon's Call(http://dc.gamedp.com) player, was absolutely pissed off by [GH] Haze, a player volunteer, due to the action of muting him in game. Furthermore, Gothix thinks Haze has a strong discrimination for the whole gay community. Gothix is very sensitive about this kind of problem in game. He decided to give the whole GH(Game Helper, player volunteers) team and Dragon's Call an official warning after he found out that he could not even type the word Gay in the world chat (The word Gay is in the in-game filter). He stated that even Blizzard had received a Gay Rights Warning in order to tell Dragon's Call official this was a serious problem. Also he reminded everyone that the Gay Pride Week 2010 was coming soon.

Necessary or unnecessary?

I believe that the word gay should not be filtered.

However, prejudical slurs having to do with homosexuality should be filtered.

I believe there are enough non-offensive synonyms for gay that if you really want to talk about it in a game chat you'll be able to do it just fine even if the exact word gay is not allowed. Given the unfortunate tendency of far too many gamers to use that word as an adjective when they want to describe something they dislike in a very negative way, I'm not surprised that online games ban the word from their chat channels. I'm also not surprised that someone would immediately jump to the conclusion that the word is banned as a part of a massive anti-homosexual discrimination conspiracy. There are over-reactors in every group, from ethnic minorities to women to mormons to homosexuals. And in every single one of those groups, there's a lot of energy wasted on chasing paper tigers like this, when there is far more damaging discrimination out there that they should be focusing the efforts on.

Whatever. You dont have freedom of speech over the internet. It doesn't exist. Its up to the discretion of the host or service provider to allow or censor whatever they want. You're on "their property."

There are several ISPs who doesn't have any speech restrictions and you are free to host from your basement if you like.

He's directing his outrage at the wrong people, Blizzard are not the ones he should be going after. The reason the word gay is banned on various websites is because it's constantly abused (eg, people saying "that game is so gay etc). It's not an ideal solution, in an ideal world there wouldn't be trolls abusing the word in the first place. If the word weren't banned then he'd be complaining about other users online instead. At the very least, banning the word controls the problem, even if it's not ideal. I don't particularly support banning the word, but I feel it's up to the administrators of each website to decide whether or not it should be banned on their own domain. Though some of the text, such as "official gay rights warning" makes it sound like he's taking it out of proportion.

Gay is used as offensive more then it is to describe.

He couldn't be fine with just saying homo-sexual or what not?

I hate it when people have to be like that, so stupid.

You could always go the multisyllibic route and just use the word homosexuality. Or you could use an @ symbol to bypass the filter. But I don't think word filtering is that effective. It's very easy to curse someone out even if certain phrases are filtered. And it's not like you can filter hate. But I think turning this into some heroic cause is a bit of a waste of time. Even if he wins, what does he accomplish? He can now type a word into the filter that has multiple synonyms. I dunno. If you're going to make a cause out of changing society's perceptions and use of language, and I do think that's a worthwhile goal, you should probably target bigger than that.

You can't tell me you've never heard people use the word gay in a derrogatory manner. It's just a matter of whether an individual community is willing to police that on an individual basis, or if they'd rather cut out all usage, and spend their time paying attention to other matters.

I'd imagine they censor the word for the same reason it's censored on GS: It's often used as a derogatory adjective. In this sense it's sort of a case of "damned if you do, damned if you don't" for the developer since if they don't ban the word then gay rights groups get angry that the devs are allowing players to use the word in an offensive manner. Ban the word and you get what's going on right now. I think the big issue with the word these days is that it has evolved to have two very different meanings, so much so that you could potentially argue that there are two different words that are pronounced and spelled as gay One is more along the lines of a curse word while the other is just a casual and much shorter way of saying "homosexual" (as well as being used to describe a homosexual male as homosexual females are referred to as lesbians).

I think this is the stupidest thing people are worried about. As far as I am concerned, when I am playing a game, I do not want any references to homosexuals. Why? Because it is not needed and I am not interested in their rights [Sorry, I worry about more important things]. If a game character is gay and it is relevant to the story, then I don't mind.

Unnecessary; people will just bypass by writing things like g@y, ghey or gai. You can't hold a game developer responsible for every hateful doofus that plays their games online. If people are too thin-skinned to put up with a couple of idiots, then they shouldn't be playing online games.

I really hate when people use words out of their context. It should be ban, there is no use for using Gay while playing a video game. Simple.
