I'm not sure if I've EVER encountered a game more uncompelling than this one.

* The music is dull / dreary

* The characters are booooooooooring

* The "combat" almost unbelievably bad

* The voice acting / accents / face models don't do it for me

* The story - well at least the story is interesting ... NOOOOOOOOOOT

hahhhaha oh my goodness... the fact that this game receives so much praise is almost enough to make me lose faith in humanity!

Maybe if I could be bothered to learn all the overly complicated potion/magic/spell bs it would make the game slightly more tolerable but there are plenty of other games out there that are way more deserving of attention.

Not impressed.

ps: as for all the mods - I have a hard time believing that even the most ingenious mods could rescue this garbage.

Simple answer -- Don't play it. If you're so offended by this game, you're only giving it more attention by openly bitching about it online.

Simply put -- Cool story, bro.

Seriously though...it's weird because just tonight, I was randomly thinking "Hm, I should play Skyrim again."

I happen to love it.

Opinions are opinions.

You're probably right about most of those things. Luckily the armor is fairly nice looking, for the most part, but if the ingame stuff doesn't do it for you you can probably find downloadable content or create your own.

If you want good quests and stories you should stick to the modding community. Bethesda isn't know for creating great stories.

However, the two things Bethesda does know how to do, and are really good at it are 1) developing lore; 2) creating a world with endless things to do.

If you spent money on Skyrim and are trying to enjoy it, for me, I don't even play the quests. Treat it like a sandbox and make up your own game and quest. Walk around the world, explore caves and forts - it's so much more enjoyable. Same with Fallout 3.

I've tried my best to like a game like Skyrim, but just can't do it. I also find it ridiculous that a lot of reviewers, especially Kevin, would give it so much praise when the game is clearly plagued with glitches and bugs. I heard they were fixed, but really? Be honest next time!

They weren't. Fans had to patch out the majority of them because Bethesda didn't bother. To this day the game is still riddled with bugs, broken questlines, broken AI, and graphical bugs.

I was never a fan of it from day one and that's coming from someone who's enjoyed Behesda games since they did Terminator Future Shock. Played all the elder scrolls, but the only thing I liked about Skyrim was the beautifully hand crafted world. It was well done for that.

I don't bash on it to sound trendy since it's such a praised game, to put it simply, the whole game felt like it was missing a soul. I didn't feel any connection to the world, my character was hollow even if he/she was the leader of about several different guilds, I never felt impact from it's stories, especially the main one. The whole get married thing was a shallow, half baked but they at least added it as a bonus, but it's quite reflective of many things in the game; Trying to throw in all sorts of ideas but not putting enough attention to any one of them.

The expansion was a joke, pick Dawnguard or Vampires, but either way you do the same missions and you still tag along with the same characters, just your central hub that you spend a good few minutes hanging about changes, but you end up doing the same story with the same options. Where is my multiple path options? I wanted to work with Mercer for the thieves guild. not that cocky slut dark elf, sassy bitch who thinks she's all that when I could take her out with a single bow shot to the face if only it wasn't for the stupid in built in mechanic of making important NPC's only fall KO instead of dying and pissing off forever (Loved New Vegas for that). I was shocked that you have little to no options when it come to the quests. Why couldn't I let the vampire lord take his daughter and rule the world forever, i'm fine with that, I don't want the bow, keep it, let there be eternal night, i'm a frigging vampire too i'm cool with that, hey I don't want to lead, I'm already the leader of the Dark Brotherhood got enough on my plate, plus i'm suppose to save the world as a Dragonborn.

Also, end boss sucked. Spoiler alert! It's a dragon! Like one no different to any of the other ones you've met by that point of the game. If you specced right you'll probably slay it in one or two swings of a ebony two-hander.

skyrim has its problems and I've argued vehemently against it on other websites, but, lol, i'll take it over most of the other junk available any day.

say, gta5 and tlou that have such glaring issues that i'd never buy them.

as a 360 console gamer I know what it's like to feel frustration about certain issues, but, thankfully, tes games allow the gamer to overcome many of the problems. and, I haven't even talked about pc mods and their impact.

Skyrim is better than the sum of its parts.

Which is weird because all those individual parts are awful. The combat is terrible but the stealth is worse, AI is completely brain dead, the story is just stupid and completely predictable high fantasy stuff, voice acting is laughable and really limited (there are only a handful of voice actors in a huge world), and the bugs should be unacceptable.

Yet, Skyrim remains one of the few games that really let players take on the world how they say fit. You can get lost exploring and feel like you're in the world at times. It's an odd phenomenon.

Honestly, the only game like that I've ever beat was Fallout 3. Fore the story just doesn't hold up well enough in most open world games. That being said, I appreciate what they did with the game.

Kind of yes.

But think about it. When you give your community all the tools necessary to produce more content for the game, instead of a few hundred minds you have like millions of "developers". Somebody's bound to come up with awesome ways to make the game better.

This is nothing but a bandwagon argument. The game is more than complete without mods. I've never used a single mod myself.

CDProjekt released a tool kit, and it just hasn't taken off the way TES/FO have, despite Witcher's characters, story and combat being stronger. Witcher just isn't designed in such a way where people can jump in and remake the world, quests, clothing, environments, etc. I give Bethesda a lot of credit for designing something from the ground up with the intention of allowing the player community the ability to build it even further. Skyrim's openness with respect to how you approach its world and quests is exactly what allows modders to have such an impact....it doesn't happen by accident...you have to plan your game around this concept to make it work.

It's not the only game to do this sort of thing...the original NWN had some of the absolute worst original content, but the mod community made it an amazing experience. And if you wanted to get in on that experience, just like with TES/FO, you have to buy from the publisher. As a result, they're going to get a lot of love (and money) that maybe they didn't earn...or maybe they did - by realizing there's a lot of brilliant people out there...artists, storytellers, programmers that love gaming and if given the chance will spend a weekend or a year sharing their vision with others. TES/FO and the few games are like the videogame equivalent of an open mic and it's amazing to see what people create. If you've never experienced the modding that goes on in these kinds of games, you won't understand why we love them so much. And that's fine. Go play something else (although I know that will be tough for you, LuLu, since I don't think there's a game out there you actually like).

The other thing about modding opportunities offered by games like TES is that it gives you or someone of similar mind the opportunity to improve what you see as wrong with the game, which simultaneously makes the game more fun for you and sends a message to the developer about what you'd like to see next time around. Bethesda has basically hard-coded constructive criticism into their game. Wanna complain? Go grab a CK...they're free.

no, it doesn't.

as a guy who's never played any tes games on the pc (I can't wait too however:) it means that the game becomes an even better experience and allows for even MORE customization.

vanilla, console tes games are very complete and are one of the best gameplay experiences one can have in the industry.

the TRUE freedom, customization and options available in tes games (and, some others) are very unique and unavailable in most games.

you can, literally, change the very nature of the gameplay and create hundreds and hundreds of hours of unique gaming.

Skyrim is definitely not as fun as Fallout 3, but I definitely got my money's worth despite the the horrible glitches and broken quests. Which is more than I can say for most of the over hyped AAA games that seem to be flooding the market lately.

I have no idea what a "CK" is.

Anyway, Epic Games and Rockstar did the Samething with Unreal Tournament and Grand Theft Auto. But unlike Bethesda, it was far less buggy and more polished, ontop of that there was a good game underneath the mods.

And I like alot of games. Notice whenever I bash a game I always isolate it to a single part, not the whole game.

But If developers should get recognition for User Content Creation , it should be Developers who make games like Project Spark, Little Big Planet, Minecraft, Disney Infinity. If you're impressed by developers who design games that revolve around mods, imagine how much harder it is to design something for the Village Idiot ! Thats real Talent, and Bethesda just doesn't have what it takes.

I found Skyrim quite involving.

It had a great deal of atmosphere.

* The music is quite good

* The characters are poor but that is not the point of Skyrim.

* The "combat" does kind of suck.

* The voice acting / accents / face models didn't do it for me either

* The story is okay

Still there is something about it. Like that whole Elven party infliltrations thing, the great college of magic quests or the cool dragons fights.

The inventory/spells systems aren't that complicated. I am not excellent at RPG's but I still managed to get by.

It shows the potential of the game, not the completeness of it. Could they have made Skyrim out of the box with all the features the mods add? Yes. That being said they don't have tens of thousands of developers and all that time to keep paying them. Additionally many of the mods don't fit well in the actual game. Are exploding chickens and ligthsabers cool? Of course! Do they actually fit within the game? No of course not, so why make it part of the game?

As for it's potential, there are several instances of mods coming out that have essentially the same functionality that they were working on in an expansion such as housing, etc.

I have only experienced one bug myself, and that was at the beginning of the game. Since then Skyrim has run almost perfectly without any issues besides the Xbox 360 texture pop in issues.

My memory of Oblivion is that it was the blander game but look at the default natural environments of both games through screens/vids makes me think that might not be the case. However, I remember Skyrim having more variety. From memory, Oblivion is one shade of green from one end of the map to the other (somewhat hyperbolic but basically true). Skyrim's snowy wastes are probably fairly bland (alleviated by nicer graphics) but it breaks things up with colourful forests and the like, here and there. I also think that man-made places and the various dungeons and definitely much better in Skyrim.

Don't like it then don't play it, simple concept to grasp really. I think it's a great game, the combat is a bit naff but besides that I enjoy going back to it.

I'm not sure if I've EVER encountered a game more uncompelling than this one.

* The music is dull / dreary

* The characters are booooooooooring

Not impressed.

ps: as for all the mods - I have a hard time believing that even the most ingenious mods could rescue this garbage.

uhm, aren't we 2014, skyrim came out in 2011.

Who cares you don't like it...

I've always thought the combat (whether weapon or magic based) in The Elder Scrolls series was boring, non-compelling and repetitive. But the joy of the series comes from the pure sense of exploration. None of the games in the series are perfect. In fact they are far from being perfect, each games has its own significant flaws. But their great sense of adventure keep me hooked for hours.

I've tried my best to like a game like Skyrim, but just can't do it. I also find it ridiculous that a lot of reviewers, especially Kevin, would give it so much praise when the game is clearly plagued with glitches and bugs. I heard they were fixed, but really? Be honest next time!

I have played Skyrim for hundreds of hours, and I have honestly never once found a major, quest-breaking, AI breaking, or graphics disrupting bug.

Never.

you and me both.

in fact, all I can do is scoff at the mere thought, since, if you take ALL MY GAMES COMBINED I've had only a few problems here and there. I always wait for these game-breaking bugs that never, ever show up.

have I had a few glitches that, oh gasp, make me restart? ya, sure. have I had a few broken quests? sure, until, they get patched or someone finds a way around it.

I have only experienced one bug myself, and that was at the beginning of the game. Since then Skyrim has run almost perfectly without any issues besides the Xbox 360 texture pop in issues.

I got it at launch, and bugs and glitches were all over the place. It was a real mess. Some of them were genuinely funny at first (I saw a head roll UP a hill), but after a while the humour simply disappeared. Playing Skyrim now is almost a different experience for me compared to launch.

Since when is a head a limb?

In your case it probably is a limb.

vanilla skyrim sure probably not the most polished game but there's so many mods that make it so interesting, i'm at 380 hours played and still mess around. The land is huge, you don't have to even follow the main questline but do your own thing, explore caves, climb mountains, become a vampire etc. There's side quest lines almost as long as the main questline. If you don't like fantasy or rpg style games sure I can see why it might not be your thing, but It's a great sandbox game to me. I'm hoping that they don't stop making single player oblivion games considering they are releasing an mmo version. That would be a shame if they only continue to tell the story that way
