Im still waiting for a game this gen that is unique and makes me feel like im playing something revolutionary. So far this generationhas been nothing butthe same old stuff with better graphics. Oh and the wiimote which is innovative if you didn't have a light gun with your NES. Sure they are good games but we have played games just like it on the previous gen. Give me something different gamedevelopers! Stop pulling stuff off the shelf and rewrapping it.Create something we havn't seen.NexusMako

Yeah I remember all those great times playing virtual tennis and baseball with my NES light gun... oh, wait...

well i dont think innovation is something as simple as "SOMETHING NEW". theres different sorts of innovation. take crysis its aprouch to how to tackle your missions is innovation, but its a fps still. assassions creed's freedom is innovative. innovative games arent always the katamari damcay (sp?) of the industry.feel_freetwo

I agree, in reality developers don't won't to take the chance and risk that comes from making inovative games.

The day when we learn how to forget previous games we played. Because we like a certain game, developers will copied that game's mechanics expecting it to be stellar hit among us. Sometimes it fail but most of the time it work.

Lot's of really good games have come out this year. But obviously you can be innovative, without necessarily being a 'good game' and you can be good without being innovative.

Innovation in 2007

Puzzle Quest: Innovative in simply putting a puzzle fighting system in to an 'RPG' (though bookworm adventures did something similar)

Super Paper Mario & Crush: Using a mix of 2D and 3D to provide interesting puzzles. Ultimately I think Crush did it better, and it will be interesting to see what Echochrome has to offer in a similar vein.

Shadowrun: A disappointing game to be sure, but innovative technology in connecting PCs and Consoles to play an online shooter together.

skate: Innovation for controls within the admittedly small skateboarding genre

Stranglehold: (PS3 Collector's Edition): Putting the original movie on to the same disc as the game

Portal: Probably the most innovative gameplay of the year, a completely new experience in 3D platforming

Team Fortress 2: An innovative approach to the art design of a multi-player shooter.

Mass Effect: A small amount of innovation in the use of paraphrased dialogue selections and fully vioce acted conversation trees.

Some of the games I listed are better than others, some pieces of innovation are more signficant than others, but there you go.

Good post. Some of those are overlooked when talking about innovation, but they're certainly deserving of recognition. Super Paper Mario and Crush, especially.
