They're nothing like God of War. Well, 'cept for the 2nd one, but that's more of a misstep than a sequel. You should play them in order of their release.
PoP: The Sands of Time - The prince and his father obtain the Sands of Time and the Vizier tricks the prince into unleashing them. The sands transform everyone in sand monsters. Everyone except for the Vizier, Prince, and a woman named Farah [it explains why]. As the prince you must traverse the levels while dodging traps and take out sand monsters along the way. You'll be making your way back to the Hourglass to undo what you've done.
PoP: Warrior Within - This takes place not too long after Sands of Time. You are on the run from the Dahaka who is time's security guard of sorts. The Prince should've died in the events of Sands, so that's why the Dahaka is after him. You travel to the Island of Time to kill the Empress of Time who created the Sands of Time. The logic is that if you kill her than the Sands will never have been created hence the Dahaka won't be chasing you 'cuz he wasn't created either. Lots of Godsmack and danger ensues.
PoP: The Two Thrones - The 3rd and final game in the Sands series. The Prince returns to his hometown to find it ravaged in chaos. It appears ?????? has returned and is staking his claim. The Prince confronts ?????? and as a result gets a chain blade wrapped around his arm and he also gets infected by the Sands of Time. This creates the Dark Prince and the 2nd of the Two Thrones [the 1st being normal Prince]. You switch back and forth between normal and Dark Prince in your quest to bring down ?????? and undo absolutely everything that has been set forth from the two previous entries in the series.
So yeah. Definitely start with Sands of Time and work your way through. Good Luck!
