I am all set for now with one player games for both systems, Zelda TP and Metroid Prime, FF X and lots of others for PS2.
So what are the best multiplayer games for said systems? Excluding Mario Kart DD and Super Smash

I second everything Phantom said, except i don't think Tales of Symphonia is that great for Co-op, since the screen only follows player 1, and only battles are co-op.Namco improved on camera with later Tales games, but this is the way it is in Symphonia. A lot of people still like it though, so maybe you will too. I do think the game is awesomethough.
But to add to more multiplayer games,
Competitive:
F-Zero GX, Mario power Tennis.
Co-op:
X-men legends 1 & 2.
Star Wars Battlefront would be a good addition for your PS2. I think it's on GC also, so wherever you could get a better deal. It's fun it competitive and co-op.Second_Rook
I agree with this completely :) Star Wars Battlefront 1 and 2 are a blast to play split screen (a couple of my all time favorite games), I would also like to add in Time Splitters Future Perfect (These three games are all in the top 5 of my favorite co-op/ split screen multiplayer of all time)!
All great games. I spenta long time playing these with buddies in the marine corps while off work and not deployed. A case of beer only makes them better :P
Seriously though, I would actually put all three of these games in my top 25 games of all time list.
Mario Strikers (most fun when played co-op). This one is actually much better than the Wii one IMO.
Def Jam Fight for NY. One of the most underrated fighting/wrestling games ever. Can play co-op or head-to-head.
Contra: Shattered Soldier & Neo Contra are good times for co-op. Same for the Lord of the Rings games and the Dynasty Warriors games.
Red Dead Revolver has one of the most underrated 4-player split-screen deathmatch modes ever.
Huilty Gear Isuka actually lets you have 4 fighters on the screen at once, that one's pretty good.

I still enjoyed it a lot and played many many matches, but I was not a fan of the targetting or the controls on the special characters, particularly the Jedis. The space battles however were awesome. All great games. I spenta long time playing these with buddies in the marine corps while off work and not deployed. A case of beer only makes them better :P
