am really looking for a good old PS 1 RPG to play....
This topic is locked from further discussion.
My favorite is FF7 but you can try something like Valkyrie Profile or Legend Of The Dragoon if you can find it...
Grandia. It also holds status as my #1 RPG of all time.DarkCatalyst
already looking for it.....
but just in case
do you think it would be a little bit childesh if I played it now " 17 years old "

Sue's an exception...without giving away too much, the game outgrows her.seconded, Suikoden II is the best RPG on the PS hands down. It has the best story of any PSX RPG and an uncliched one at that. Luca blight is the best JRPG villain since Kefka and the ending is excellent. The game is about war, not about an epic quest. That game's narrative makes FFVII look like amateur hour. Final Fantasy Tactics is great, even IGN ranked it higher on their 2007 top 100 game lists than any FF game except for VI. You got FF: Chronicles which as IV and Chrono Trigger and you have FF: Anthologies, which has the grandmasterpiece, FFVI.I sure loved Suikoden 2. I guess I'd go with it.

PS1 is full of great RPGs.
don't make me pick!
well FFT, FF7, Valkyrie Profile, Xenogears, and Suikoden 1&2 is among my favorite.
Front Mission also gets overlooked quite often.
Saga Frontier 2 also gets overlooked too often.
Not to mention Breath of Fire 4.

How do you call "press X until everything's dead" above average gameplay? That's Dragon Quest syndrome. Sure, there were the large-scale battles, but they were so few that they might as well have not been there at all. No matter what so long as it's a video game: no gameplay, no go.
It's not up for debate. Final Fantasy 7.believe it or not

Wild Arms, and Dragon Quest VII
The original Wild Arms was a really good game, not too sure about part 2 though.
DQVII ismyfavorite PS1 rpg next to FF's 7+8.

It's not up for debate. Final Fantasy 7. There are tons of PS RPGs that are better than FFVII...........................even FFIX is better than FFVII. Hell, FFVII wasn't even the best FF of 1997.Grandia. It also holds status as my #1 RPG of all time.DarkCatalystThe ending ruined the entire experience for me. I was in love with the entire game and I wish I shut it off right after dealing the final blow to the final boss battle. The ending just ****s all over all the ordeals and pain the cast had to endure through the 80+ hours beast of an epic journey.

Xenogears
Wish there were more games that had that qualiber of story in a jrpg.

Xenogears made sense? :|
Honestly, aside from Suikoden II, every JRPG has a whacky, and crazy storyline.
Yea it did after playing it couple of times. What I love about the story in Xenogears is how the they incorporated issues such as religion, politics, social class, evolution into the game.
Suikoden 2 probably is my 2nd favorite jrpg game on ps1.

agreed, FFVII and FFVIII were wacky, Xenogears and Chrono Chross were "what the hell?" stories, even FFIX and FFT had wild stories although less so. The problem was that the metaphysics overpowered the human element, which wasn't the case in Suikoden II (or my fave FFVI). The only metaphysics Suikoden II had were the runes, which have a human element to them. The characters really make that game, Riou, Nanami, Jowy, Jilla, and little Pilikia were all chararcters you can connect to, much better than say the spiky haired kid and his effeminate white haired rival from that overrated game. And Luca Blight is a villain you can really hate.....that guy kills children..... Too bad Suikoden II now sells for over $100.....wow[QUOTE="ASK_Story"][QUOTE="istreakforfood"]

They're different, but that's a good thing. They step away fromt he norm and the stories are actually great. Of course, Xenogears is far better than Final Fantasy VIII, which does have a great deal of human element.
From what I've played so far, Suikoden 2 isn't that great.
Edit: Oh, texasgoldrush. LOL.

Xenogears is stuffed, its pretty pretentious and convoluted...its not bad, it is just not an all time RPG great. FFVIII plot doesn't work in the end. It is a confusing mess. For a while though the story does work and it is one of the better FF stories, its beaten by VI, IX, and Tactics though...all of them which Ito directed. Suikoden II is about substance more than style and it is a throwback to the 16 bit era of RPGs. It has enough depth to make it a great story, but simple enough to understand what it is going on, the same formula that made FFVI the widely praised narrative that it was. The overarching theme of friendship through conflict is brilliantly executed. The flaw lies with the translation.....it is sloppy in some places as well as some aspects are taken directly from the first game, such as many characters. But the game is really about Riou, Jowy, Nanami, and Pilika.....and Luca and the conflict he starts. The mataphysical elements such as the runes only represent their characters. No grand scheme of world domination, no great evil from the dark beyond, it is just a human story.[QUOTE="hakanakumono"][QUOTE="texasgoldrush"] agreed, FFVII and FFVIII were wacky, Xenogears and Chrono Chross were "what the hell?" stories, even FFIX and FFT had wild stories although less so. No grand scheme of world domination, no great evil from the dark beyond, it is just a human story. There's a lot to Xenogears, but none of it is "stuffed" or "pretentious." It sets up itself to be an amazing game and the delivery turned out better than any other JRPG. There's just so much put in Xenogears and that's part of what makes it great. I'm sick and tired of the word "convoluted" being thrown around to pretend as if games that make a serious effort to develop and expand upon their plotlines are somehow flawed for trying to go above and beyond.
Final Fantasy VIII works out perfectly in the end. It's hardly a "mess." Just because you find a plot confusing doesn't mean it's bad, it means you need to pay more attention. Final Fantasy VIII requires a 2nd play through to appreciate it imo (or at least the Japanese ver, where Edea's CONTEXTUAL speech makes sense).
Blah blah blah Final Fantasy VI superior storytelling blah blah themes execution. Cool. I don't buy anything you say when it comes to what makes a story better or worse. Sorry.
Lol, ironically the advertising campaign for Final Fantasy VIII (in Japan) was "The story of humanity" or "A human story." While I think Xenogears ultimately takes the cake when it comes to "The story of humanity," Final Fantasy VIII did accomplish far more realistic characters than any other Final Fantasy. The only other Final Fantasy I'd describe as a "human story" would be VI, believe it or not. Metaphysical elements are present in Final Fantasy VI just as well as VIII, but both have a strong human element. And Xenogears has the strongest human element of them all. The game just screams "humanity."
I haven't played the rest of Suikoden 2 yet, but so far it seems a bit shallow. But I have a lot more gameplay to go, so we'll see if SPOILERS Joey's reason for betrayal is well developed in the end. END SPOILERS.

Xenogears is the very defintion of "convoluted"...if it wasn't, than Square would not have have released a guide explaining the backstory. I think Xenogears has its good moments like the philosophical clash between Fei and Krellian, but there is too much going in this game. This game splits people, it is you like it or you don't. Its great to have depth, but Xenogears took it way too far in the extreme. Games like FFVI and Suikoden II didn't overextend themselves and they were far more effective at telling a human story that Xenogears did. The more you add depth to the story, the more plot holes you have to close....... If what you say about the Japanese version of VIII is true, that would help. Like I said, VIII is one of the better stories overall in my view, but even I think it polarizes....something IV, VI, and Chrono Trigger don't do. You will find out soon enough why Jowy did what he did............and how it makes him a great character. No, Xenogears does not split people. I've never met anyone who didn't appreciate Xenogears. There's no such thing as "too much." You can either handle it or you can't. There really isn't THAT much to Xenogears, aninhd while it does have a lot to it it doesn't really take an extra guide to understand 99% of the game. The supplemental guide just expands upon the world of Xenogears, outlines history, and explains some of the less explained things in Xenogears. In other words, Xenogears can be understood just by playing the game. ... Plot holes are plot holes and depth is depth. They have nothing to do with each other.
Depth and complexity is inherently better than simplicity when it comes to storytelling. This is a fact. There is no arguing this. No debate. This is why we read books like The Invisible Man in literature cl@ss and not Harry Potter. Because depth and complexity is to be appreciated. Depth and complexity IS substance. A well developed story is inheritly better than a story that is not well developed. How difficult it is to understand is irrelevant. I hated The Invisible Man because it is such a deep book but it is very difficult to grasp. But it was necessary for me to read it because depth needs to be appreciated and The Invisible Man is literary gold. Xenogears is no Invisible Man, but it is a deep and compelling story that explores many facets of life.
Human stories need heavy development because humans are complicated creatures. We are not black and white. To tell a "human" story depth is needed. Otherwise it is not a "human" story, it is just an extravagant puppet show. A mere caricature of human life. False. Pretend. Xenogears' characters are human. They are deep. Complicated. Unreasonable. "Good" and "evil" are not human elements, they are human conceptual inventions intended to separate us from each other. True human stories forego simplicity and explore all characters as people. The depth in Xenogears isn't limited to Fei or Elly much like it is in Final Fantasy VIII (as Rinoa and Squall capitalize on the depth), but even the lower ranking villains. We see their intentions, ambitions, worries, and inner struggles overall. This is what makes it a human story. Cardboard cutouts of people are not "human" stories.
Videogames have an amazing potential for storytelling. In order to make literary progress depth and complexity must increase in the games we see today. The problem is that after the PS1 era there was little improvement in terms of depth and complexity in the game genre. Xenogears was a major step forward in the JRPG genre in 1998, Silent Hill 2 was a major step forward in 200 ... 1 (I think), and perhaps Siren in 2003. We desperately need more steps forward in a genre that has so much potential as a storytelling medium. We don't need to focus on delivering simple stories that everyone can understand in order to impede progress.

I figured you had gained a bit of a reputation here and now I see why. I don't think you honestly believe what you just typed there. This is nothing more than cheap heat, IMO. If you didn't like the game, that's one thing, but to deny Xenogears' place among the all-time greats is an opinion I'm more than willing to call wrong.
