how much does a game like mario galaxy cost to make? i know a game like gta4 wasnt cheap. we all heard stories about that one. i watched a "making of" for both uncharted 2 and mass effect 2,two games known for great presentation and production value. obviously there is a lot they pour into games of this type but the world has come to demand certain things from certain genres, for it to be deemed great.

games have movie budgets these days, or so it seems. i cant imagine what it takes to make a game like mario galaxy BUT would i be wrong in ASSUMING its far less than something like rdr?

Even a game like Mario Galaxy 2 prolly cost $8-10 Million to make and when a company sells 350,000 + copies, they make profit on a game that cost (approx).

They say Gears of war 1budget wasaround 8-12 million and compared to other outstanding games like Metal gear 4 with a budget around $70,000,000 sometimes it's pretty hard to know whether you get to have cheap software that makes amazing games or superb hard and heavy software that demands too much investment.

Indeed, I don't think you can really know an actual cost of a game without actually working there. Also, development on a different platform might cost more or less with the experience developers have with the system and the ease they can program for it. I take it Ninty pretty much has that down.

You can rest assured Nintendo spares no expense when it comes to their flagship title, but I'd wager that a game like GTA 4 or RDR costs far more to produce given the vast amount of content.

True. Metro2033 was very well done imo, but the production was apparently low-cost. I guess this was also partly due to the lower personnel costs.

My friend and I were talking the last few days about game costs and how if you have a staff of around 100 and each make a minimum of $40000 a year and it takes 2 years to make the game then you are already at a salary cost of $8 million alone.
