@loafofgame: How can you say you don't like the genre when you've never played one? There are a good amount of JRPGs that don't have a "Japanese" art style. Also, to say you don't like Japanese music clearly tells me you haven't ever heard any good stuff of it. JRPGs have some of the best music in gaming, generally speaking.
Fair enough. I could have known my generalisation would get me into trouble. I should have known better. I apologise. But I did sort of imply my opinion was weak by admitting never having played a JRPG. I have watched streams on a significant amount of JRPG's though, but I didn't want to take them into the equation, since well, games aren't movies (even though they can be perfectly watchable) and these streams don't give a complete view on the game (but still enough to decide not to spend any money on them). None of these streams ever made me want to try these games, so I won't take the risk.
Also, I never questioned the 'quality' of the music in these games. I just said it doesn't appeal to me. And I'm very sorry, but stating that me not liking the music clearly means I haven't heard the good stuff is a very rash statement. I hear a lot of people praising the music of games like FF and I can understand why people like it. That's also the reason why I've actually listened to a fair amount of JRPG soundtracks. Without going into too much detail (and again, heavily generalising to get the point across), most of this music is strongly influenced by western classical (and also pop and jazz) music, but with something added to it. I think it's the fact that it's a non-western perspective on western music (I realise the danger of this statement), which is fascinating to examine, but which also makes the music sound like a caricature of or a parody on western music (to me, that is). Again, this isn't a bad thing and for some this difference is exactly what makes it appealing, but I don't like it. I guess it points too much towards the limitations and conventions of the western musical idiom that I'm so used to. And again, I'm probably generalising a lot, so don't read this as some claim of the absolute truth. It's my experience and nothing more. And I admit that experience is limited.
I admit that I might have a too generalised view of JRPG's. And I apologise. I usually do not generalise this much.
Anyway, please suggest titles and music that might disprove my generalisation and if they do I'll fully admit I was wrong.

The problem with the category "JRPG" is defining what people mean. RPG is a genre and, by Japanese style, I assume they mean either anime styled or turn based. For example; Dragon's Dogma is a JRPG but you wouldn't find many people calling it that.
Yeah, I should have been more careful. I usually shy away from generalisations. I was indeed thinking of the anime style, which of course does not define the genre. Turn based isn't a problem, however.
