Hardest game I ever played would probably be Ghouls 'n Ghosts. My God was that game hard.GabuEx
Not to mention the the last level held probably the nastiest surprise I've ever seen in a game. At least the SNES one did, I never actually played the original yet.

I haven't watched them all but based on the first video, I'd say it looks like it relies too much on trial and error plus zero fault tolerance if you ask me. One life only and you have to start from the beginning if you mess up judging by the game over screen.
As for what I call the hardest game that's got a shred of fairness, I'd have to go with N. There are 100 episodes. Each episode is broken down into five levels. You're given an infinite number of lives so when you die, you start at the beginning of the level. No hidden surprises since you see the entire level from the beginning. The level design isn't just spikes everywhere and allows for a slower pace.
