Ok, so I played CT way back when Final Fantasy Chronicles was brand-new on the PSX, I think it was 2001~ish, and I recall how I played it purely to see what the fuss was about (played Cross before it so I was curious), which in turn made me beat it with a Gameshark.

Now I got it on the DS and I was hoping I could play it/beat it the right way this time around, but what turned me off is that friends of mine told me how no matter what they do they can't seem to level-up high enough to face Lavos in the end (even with most sidequests done and the Masamune acquired).

So yeah, what's your take on this? Is the game really that much demanding grind-wise to buff up your characters?

NOTE: please keep story spoilers to a minimum, I've forgotten most of the plot and I'd lke to re-experience it myself.

Chrono Trigger is a blast, don't hesitate and just buy it, it'll be the best value for money you ever spend on a video game ever :D

I have it, bought it from a friend. But what about the grind issue?

Well, it is an older RPG which at the time it was made grinding was not really complained about or considered to much of an issue.

As for me, I did all the side quest before I went to fight Lavos and I beat him pretty easy.

No way. I did zero grinding and only half the sidequests first time I fought him, and beat him first try. The monster arena added for the DS release also lets you win Golden Stud items that reduce mana cost by 75%. Equip everyone with those, spam Triple Techs, and everything dies. Also, when you're fighting Lavos, if you attack the wrong part of him he WILL be able to regenerate himself and counter-attack. Just be careful and he's easy.

I beat Lavos whith each of my characters leveled up to roughly level 54 I believe, and even though it was a grueling final battle that I lost multiple times, it was also a satisfying one once I beat it. I think your friends are too use to easy RPGs where if you level up to 99 you automatically win the game.

If you aren't fighting Lavos the right way, it'll take hours upon hours of grueling grinding to kill him the wrong way. If you're fighting him the right way, unless you run away from most battles and did no sidequests, you should be able to kill him easily.

If you do all the side quests in the game your level should be high enough to beat Lavos.

depending on when you fight lavos he will have different stats. there is one powerful form that almost requires your levels to be maxed.

If anything, the game is too easy.
