What failed it in the long run is the lack of strong 3rd-party support and software. I loved my Saturn back in the day (got it as a gift), but I gotta admit the most fun I had with it was with a couple of 2D fighters, sports games, Sonic 3D Blast, Myst and Megaman X4. I'll admit I'm 80% fond of my time with it back in the day thanks solely to X4. To me Saturn = X4. This goes to show the catalog of games it got for its Western release as a whole. The first Playstation on the other hand I can't count the number of epic gaming experiences I had with it. I've lost count.

you do understand you basically missed out the vast majority of good western Saturn games? great 3rd party support it certainly didn't have , but it certainly did not lack good games, even just in the west (once you count in the Japanese market, its a whole different story)

Here's my collection (which I still own):

Myst

Sega Worldwide Soccer

Sega Worldwide Soccer '98

Virtua Cop 2

Clockwork Knight

Megaman X4

WWF In Your House

Die Hard Aracde

Daytona USA

Bug!

Virtua Fighter (packed in)

I played (or borrowed for a couple months):

Panzer Dragoon

Street Fighter Alpha

X-Men: Children Of The Atom

Sonic 3D Blast

Tomb Raider (have despised the TR series ever since, horrible and boring)

The AAA titles I missed were:

Clockwork Knight 2

Nights Into Dreams

Enemy Zero

Burning Rangers

Panzer Dragoon RPG (or did it not get a Western release)

That RTS RPG by GameArts

Those are what I can recall from the top of my head which I missed out on. Please let me know any other good titles (not Tetris puzzle-based) which I missed other than those. When I take what's stated above and compare it to my Playstation experience the Saturn gets taken to school.

EDIT: Nobody said anything about its games being bad. It's all about the catalog and the number of games a Western gamer had in his Saturn's disposal.

well first off , the European PAL games (ie , the ones that are native to where I live, and thus easiest to get for the most part)

shown here are the only 2 US Saturn games I have, the reason I own so few is that almost every game released in the US for the Saturn , was also released here, so no point in the US versions, also US Saturn boxes are awful, some of the worse game boxes Ive seen

Are these enough games?

and most of these were not expensive, nor were they hard to find (the majority of them can be found on that magical place known as the internet), so anybody who claims Saturn games are all expensive/hard to find/rare or some other claim like that can look at this, because it proves those bogus claims wrong.

and by not expensive, I don't mean you can get these at 2 for a pound, but its not like they cost an arm and a leg (the majority of them actually cost no more then £10-15 at most)

oh and the majority of them are not 1st party either :P

It gave me Dragon Force...but not too much else that I could not get somewhere elserawsavon

the majority of these are exclusive to the Saturn , or if they aren't , the Saturn is the better version or at least as good, as any comparable console version at the time (usually this means PS1, though a few N64 ports exist too) (with the exception of Tomb Raider and Fifa98, as well as Castlevania SOTN)

as for some of the Neo Geo ports, the Saturn versions are better then any other save for the Neo Geo originals, but usually the Saturn versions are cheaper, and have alot less loading then the Neo CD versions.

and sure some of them are on compilations, but thats besides the point, there are compilations of alot of arcade games......and people still like to play the original console ports (if this was the case, people wouldnt bother playing their Mega Drives, due to all the compilations.)

so yeah , that claim of yours was bogus too :P

what youve shown is that you didn't look at the pictures, if you did, you would have seen exactly what I said.

its very interesting why people will avoid Saturn games, first they claimed they were worse then the PS versions, so I proved its not as simple as that, then they claim Saturn games are expensive, something I again proved was bogus.

now its just a matter of "if its on another system , there is no point in buying it".

I assume there is no point in getting any of the best games on Super Nintendo because they are on other systems, primarily the GBA in the case of the Nintendo/Rare games.

or how about the Mega Drive's best games, many of which are on one of the many compilations avaiable for a variety of systems.

but of course this kind of ignorance only applies to the Saturn.

For what YOU want from a system, maybe.
For what I want from a system, no

I looked at your pics and was not interested in what it/they had to offer
-I bought the version that came with virtua cop, daytona, and virtua fighter...all those were meh
-I owned the horde on 3DO
-Albert Odyssey sucked ass IMO
-Lunar 1/2 were best on PS1 IMO (story/events/extras)
-had Grandia on PS1 (do not care about graphics for an RPG)
-do not like Tomb Raider

...so the Saturn had one great game I loved (Dragon Force)...everything else was either 'meh' or I was able to play on another system
(unless I am missing something that I could only have played on a US Saturn)

the horde?? I don't have that game :P

there is a difference between "this system is not for me" and "I can get the games elsewhere".

getting the games elsewhere for the sake of it is biased , saying the system is not for you is something else entirely.

though think of it this way, youve basically labeled a few games out of the whole list, and just because you can play it on another system , doesnt mean its better.

so yeah, youre still ignoring most of the games, but if you feel the system is not for you , thats a completely different thing then not playing the games on the system just for the sake of it.

My point was that the system was a worthless buy for me -my exact quote was centered on what it gave 'ME' (which was only one game) There was no point in me owning it (aside from that 1 game) Everything I wanted on it I could get on my PS1. And the PS1 had tons of games I wanted that were not on the Saturn -so both systems shared games -Saturn had 1 game I wanted that the PS1 did not have -PS1 had hundreds (well more like 50) of games I wanted that were not on the Saturn =worthless system for me and a wasted buy

thats the thing you never said that. what you said was that Dragon force was the only game worth buying , and every other game is on another system. there is a big difference between saying a system isnt for you, and that there is no point in buying a system because you can get some of its games on other systems. so what you meant is different from what you wrote, its as simple as that

what you said was that Dragon force was the only game worth buying ,

That is not what I said...see above
Only 1 game worth buying (not what I said) =/= I could getgames for another system (what I did say). There were games worth guying if you could not get them for another system

and every other game is on another system. there is a big difference between saying a system isnt for you, and that there is no point in buying a system because you can get some of its games on other systems. so what you meant is different from what you wrote, its as simple as that

I stated what I wanted to sate perfectly and clearly. It is not my fault that the statement was not interpreted properly or that someone else made and assumption that was not correct

I said it only gave me 1 game and little else that could not be obtained for another system...that is 100% true

I don't understand what you don't understand :?

well somewhere down the line someone messed up , either me or you :P

we shall agree to disagree then. but note, I would never tell someone they are wrong if they feel the Saturn (or any system) is not for them if they know the library decently.

what i got from your statement is "no point in getting it, since 1 game is worth getting and the rest are on PS1" , that confused me

if that was not your intention one of us failed in explaining ourselves , though on a side note, Im sure there is more then one game that would appeal to you, I own nearly 80 Saturn games, but there are over 500, so this is not full by far.

Darkman2007

Hard to say (that there would be Saturn games I could have played on my US Saturn that I would have enjoyed and could not have played on another system...enough to justify a system purchase).
I did not go online looking for game info at the time. In fact, I forget howI even knew what I did about games TBH.
So I am sure there probably are some gems out there. But most of what I have seen would not qualify as such

Killer collection! I'm trying to add games to each of my legacy platforms slowly but surely. I have about 8 Saturn titles and I'm trying to go back and purchase the ones that I remember having as a kid, which brings back great memories! I had Virtua Cop with the gun, but somehow I don't know if that will be as fun as it was back then. Dark Savior and Legend of Oasis were also to games that I'm wanting to get again. I also had the Saturn version of RE and I would like to get it again on that platform. Just picked up a 55in LED, so now I'm about to start my game room, which I'm putting my other 55in LCD in there. Now I just have to get that S Video you spoke about, and start gaming!!

I recently got Virtua Cop 1, House of the Dead and a light gun, those games are still a lot of fun to play. Now I don't have to waste money on arcades anymore.:P

thats the one flaw with my TV, no light guns with LCDs...... well ,at least those games (well VC1 and 2) work with the Saturn mouse, which while not as good as gun obviously, its alot better then a controller. I would recommend Virtua Cop 2 if youre into the light gun games, its a great game.

The Saturn is one of my favorite systems or all time, only the SNES holds a higher place in my heart!

At the time of the saturn launch, I was amazed that the 3D games like Daytona, Virtua Fighter, etc in the arcades could be played on a home console.

I could make a huge list of Saturn games that were top favorites of mine, but at the end of the day, I felt the saturn excelled at 2D and 3D fighters. The fighter genre has always been my favorite and the racing genre has been my 2nd favorite, and the Saturn offered a bunch of great/elite games in both those genres.

While I think the high price may have been a factor initially at launch, I think the "surprise" release had contributed more to its slow launch. I don't think either of those things doomed the system in the long term.

rubbish Sega Marketing + early rushed games + lack of Sega money. thats really where it leads to , Sony had more money and could advertise alot more. also Sony could pay developers for exclusivity , something Sega could never do to the same extent (why do you think Tomb Raider 2 and 3 were PS1 exclusive? despite TR1 being on the Saturn first)

Never got my hands on a copy of PDS. Not willing to pay what they were asking either

Im not sure why alot of people seem to put som much emphesis on the Saturn's launch , which admittedly was lousy.

the price didn't stay high forever, it was lowered eventually and besides, the launch isnt a deciding factor.

if the launch meant anything, the Dreamcast would have been a massive success, and the PS3 would have been a miserable failure.

there are other , considerably more important reasons as to why the Saturn didn't achieve its full retail potential in the west, and I could list them , but people seem more concerned with putting the facts into neat little boxes they can understand, rather then the actual truth. (and this goes for the any aspect of history)

Darkman2007
They wanted a jump on the competition and that particular launch was important cause it was pivotal that Sony NOT suceed from Segas viewpoint.

of course , but its not the big thing that killed the Saturn , its an event, but not the main one.

also, youre only focusing on the US market, in Japan it was launched the same time as the PS1, and it was still outsold, though it did significantly better in Japan then in other regions.

Darkman how does Zero Divide on the Saturn compare to the earlier PS1 games? I've only seen two mentions of it online and both times the writers seemed to think that the series got weaker as it went along, but this seems unlikely to me (The Saturn game at least looks clearly better graphically in videos)

well Ive played Zero Divide 2 on the PS1 ,and Zero Divide Final Conflict on the Saturn. believe it or not, they are similar in everything but graphics. the music is the same in alot of stages, the menus look the same too, most of the characters are the same. in terms of how they played , they played mostly the same , other then the Saturn version feeling a bit smoother (but its a minimal increase). the major difference is the graphics obviously. which are considerably better on the Saturn, and I could post comparison pics too. so yeah , whoever told you the Saturn version is worse is speaking a load of rubbish from my experience.

If you thought Albert Odyssey was bad... You should try Final Fantasy VII and VIII. After they made me realize FF was a dead series, Albert Odyssey was an incredibly fresh and fun game, and pretty dang good in its own right. I don't see how you could have not enjoyed it, if you happen to like quality JRPGs at all. How exactly did it disappoint you? It's not one of my absolute favorites but I've never heard anyone say anything bad about it until you. And PDS is certainly worth the money. It's a timeless experience, astounding in every aspect.

[QUOTE="rawsavon"]No, I played and hated Albert Odyssey. One of the worst JRPG's I have ever played TBHpills4louis

If you thought Albert Odyssey was bad... You should try Final Fantasy VII and VIII. I have beat almost every FF
FF7 was great for what it did for the genre, but not a great game IMO (good though)
I HATED FF8, but I was young with limited funds = I beat every game I bought

Albert Odyssey = bad/bland characters, boring story, linear, easy...nothing of note + a case of 'did not give a f***' about any character or anything that happened to them

PDS might be worth the money, but I have over 100 games I have yet to even open at this point. That means I am not shelling out that kind of money on an old game (when I have so much other stuff to play)

1. I have issues...

With that said:
Wwhen I was young, I had the time but no money = played games over and over, did every side quest, etc...beat the s*** out of them.
Now that I am old, I have the money but no time. I can afford to buy w/e games I want to, and I do. So I have over 100 new, sealed games that need to be played.

Why do I keep buying?...see number 1.

I'm the same as you...... I've got a stack of unopened games (and even a few consoles) sitting upstairs just waiting to be played. I can't resist a good deal and impulse buying is a big problem for me.

I was like that, when I was younger, I either had to get my grandparents to buy me games, or trade in old games for new ones.

now I have more money , but less time.

though my game playing time is mixed, on some days its an hour, on some days its none.

Don't even get me started on Steam deals.

I don't even have enough HDD space to fit of the games I've bought recently.

Nah, I'm going to stop buying games for a while and start concentrating on finishing the ones I've already got.

I buy alot of games that are very arcadey in nature, so you kinda finish them really quickly.

I'm more into FPS, adventure and Rpg games, which more often than not are not over quickly!

I see. A buddy of mine, well he's my best friend, which is ocd, and he has it real bad. He has actually bought different versions of limited edition games, just to get the special content for each! He has given me several games that he has accidentally purchased twice. I don't keep any of my games sealed, I just like to play them to death!
