the fact that HL1 is in the 20-30 section while hl2 is #6 is an insult, HL1 WAS the best game ever made, while it isnt as good anymore at the time it crushes HL2, and alot of games. I think they picked it that way cause HL2 is big right now. Also anyone notice that there were alot of PC games on the list, like 3 in top 10? cool

One of the issues I had with this list, is that modern games always seemed to get blackballed. There 5 games in the top 30 that were released between 2000 and 2007. Only 5. . . . Do the math if you want, but that just doesn't add up proportionately. Nostalgia always proves to be a little too powerful for these lists.

But I suppose overall it was pretty good. It did raise a pretty scary point to me though. Super Mario Brothers ranked at number 1 (I can agree with that I suppose). But they pointed out that many younger games have never played this game, or at least in it's original incarnation. Not only did that make me feel old, but it did make me realize that in another 10 years that's a piece of gaming history that most people will never experience.

that is easy to rationalize. a game must stand the test of time to see how it is viewed in future years in order to be any greatest of all time candidate. especially in today's age where you have an ubershooter showing up every 6 months claiming to be the next comming of god, and ends up forgotten when the next one hits.

As any such list, it's flawed. As much as I love Shadow of the Colossus, it doesn't deserve to be in the Top 20 of The Greatest Games of All Time. I mean, come on. God of War is much too high as well for my taste. Also, I find the fact that there's no room for Vice City, San Andreas, Heroes of Might and Magic III, and The Longest Journey in the Top 100 flat-out ridiculous and stupid.

If nothing else, I'm glad someone recognizes that Half-Life 2 is better than the original game.

That's true to an extent, but there's also no denying that that list is rife with old games that do not stand the test of time and are not in any way, shape, or form better than certain modern games which have been completely ignored.

Well, I was under the impression that this was a list of the best games ever, not the most influential or innovative.

I went and played through Grand Theft Auto III this year and it was only then that I realized just how much has the series evolved in a staggeringly short amount of time.

Why? I always think sotc is way ahead of its time...the way you fight in long range mode using the bow and close range using the sword, the epic battles, the open and detailed world, the platforming, the soundtrack, the unique story... the whole atmosphere it's just amazing. Shadowis among the few games which leaves a mark in the industry. The only problem it had was the clunky controls...

i made that comment to illustrate what is wrong with these lists. the way gamespot does it is so much better. anything else is too subjective.

I knew before I read the list that I wouldn't be happy with it. I do think games deserve to be higher/lower or what have you, but my biggest complaint with the list was too see Goldeneye 007 at 75. In my humble opinion, I believe that this game unified the FPS market as to what direction it should take, not to mention that it practically brought FPSs to the console market.

I don't think it actually said "best" games, it said "greatest". Greatness can cetainly be taken to refer not only to how good a gameis, but also to how important it is/was. Yes, San Andreas was better than GTAIII, but was it greater? I think there's a difference.

I'm not saying that the list wasn't flawed, but the focus on oldergamesdoes have it's merits. It's often easier to tell from the vantage point of a few years (or decades)whether something was truly great, or was just the flavor of the month.

Terrible list. There is no way you can objectively quantify "greatness" in games and then organise them on a numerical list. Half Life 2 beating out games like Metroid Prime, System Shock 2, the original Half Life, Super Metroid, A Link to the Past, Super Mario World, etc, etc? Come on IGN, be logical here. No matter what Half Life 2 has done great it cannot measure with the things that those games have done great, especially the original HL.

This whole deal IGN is doing is completely flawed. They should adopt Gamespot's idea of just creating a "Hall of Fame" that are ordered by the date of induction and nothing else and are all "equally great."

Exactly. While I don't disagree with most of the games IGN selected, I certainly take issue with their order. It's almost impossible to accurately rate them on a numerical scale, since many games could be considered equals.

Half of these games I haven't even heard of! Lots of games should have been there that weren't. The list is too long for me to mention.

Oh, and if the games are ranked based on how innovative they were or how much they did for video gaming, then wouldn't the first video game of all time be number 1?:)

No SMG, SSBM, TP? IGN itself said SMG was the best platformer ever, and TP was the best Zelda game, IIRC.

For the game to qualify to be on the list it had to have been at least 1 year old, so that's why Galaxy wasn't on it, and may have been why TP wasn't included. Not sure why Melee wasn't on the list, as it was superior to the original Smash Brothers in every way.

And for the record, if anyone is interested I'm putting together a Top 50 list of my own. If anyone is interested in contributing please leave a message in my blog. It won't require much work from anyone (aside from myself), and should generate a pretty interesting list. Most importantly I'll have a way to explain how the final list is compiled and people won't take as much issue with which games finish in what place.

well it's the right call. not only is it the most important game in history, it was the best selling "toy" 3 christmases in a row.
