Mass Effect 2

Although if you ask me the same question in a weeks time I might come out with different answers. My top 5 changes every now and then.

i didn't think anyone besides me would put those two up there

I know. Considering the amount of hate they get I still found them to be amongst the most enjoyable games this gen.

True, i was a little angry after the original ending of ME3, but the extended ending made a lot of that up to me. Only thing that lacked for me was the use of the war assets in the final fight

I find that thinking of the whole of ME3 as 'the ending' makes it better. The only thing that really bothered me was that it all led up to a bloody slideshow instead of a proper cinematic, and I agree with the whole war asset thing, it did seem rather pointless in the end. I can't really say how I felt about the original ending since I didn't complete it until the extended ending was released.

i don't know how anyone could not like me2 - easily one of the best games ever IMO.

as for mass effect 3 the flaming out of control rage is justified. me3 (although excellent) completely ruined the replay value of 1 and 2. it also ruined the whole concept and reason for playing me1 and 2 (by way of integrated online play replacing importance of war assets acquired in me 1 and 2) - carrying over all the important actions and choices made in those first 2 games ended up being completely irrelevant.

also, any game that ends with a pop-up telling you to buy dlc is flat out BS. from ashes and leviathan should have come with the game and are essential to understanding the complete deep story and ending the journey in the proper manner. bioware/ea flat out ripped everyone off by making that stuff dlc.

5. Halo 3

4. Fallout: New Vegas

3. Mass Effect 2

2. Dark Souls

1. Bioshock

It's hard for me to leave off both Zeldas, SMG, GTA V, and Infinite. I felt like the Zeldas were just poorly times (SS too close to next-gen, TP was a gamecube port). GTA V is great, but the online component was the big draw IMO and it sputtered out of the gate.

None of them, because most of them are terrible and the ones that aren't are mediocre at best.

Not sure if I can narrow it down to 5, but my list would have Demon's Souls/Dark Souls in it. Probably at #1.

and...

2. The Last Of Us

3. Mass Effect 2

and, because five just isn't enough:

6. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

5: Nothing.

Because i wouldn´t have GTA V in the top 5.

did you play fallout 3 without the dlc or did you play fallout 3 with all of the dlc? i have never played it without the dlc and am wondering if it's less of a game than the gotye. loved all of the dlc except the pitt, but not because of it's content, i like it less because it crashes more than any other time in the game.

I played Fallout 3 without the DLC and its still the best game this gen imo.

Also i think the DLC is better for NV then 3. But both are great and only adds to the fallout experience.

hey thanks for the reply on fo3 with no dlc. i might do a playthrough without dlc just to see what it's ike without it. i agree it's one of the best (if not the best) games this gen. torn between rdr, me2 and fo3 for best game this gen.

loved dead money and lonesome road. also that it was pure genius how the npc's and their doings in the world of new vagas were intertwined in lonesome road and old world blues. very cool!

2. Bioshock: Infinite

3. DIshonored

4. GTA V

5. Fallout 3

If any of you noticed that I didn't include any Xbox 360 exclusive games, this is not because I am a PS3 fanboy or anything like that. I own a gaming PC, PS3 and 360. I thoroughly enjoy the Halo series, and it almost made it to my list, but it just doesn't give me the lasting feels like these games do.

@buccomatic: Hey there. Sorry for taking a little while to answer, life's been hectic these days.

Previous point. I must admit that my list reveals my inability to propose a definitive top 5 list. These are eleven of the best games this generation, but you could add so many others. I miss to reference any independent titles such as Journey, for example, which is certainly worth mentioning.

When it comes to the BioShock series, the reason to consider BioShock Infinite better is merely personal preference. Both have strong storylines, solid gameplay and, most of all, extraordinary conceptual settings. Rapture and Columbia are two of the finest fictional architectural creations seen in video games this gen.

So, for me, personally, I just happened to find BioShock a very difficult game to play. Difficult, as in "oppressive". It's almost silly because I've played the Dead Space series, which could be considered even darker, but I didn't feel that. But, although BioShock is brilliant, going through Rapture felt so terribly claustrophobic that I would feel psychologically and even physically tired after a couple hours of playing it. It was an exhausting experience, and I had to "force" myself to play it to the end in the final third of the game, just to see the conclusion.

A bit more objectively, I think that Infinite is better written, and the conclusion, although venturing into the surrealist, is much stronger than the fragile ending of the original game. So, overall, I find Infinite better, but I don't consider my personal judgement final in any way. In the end, both games are worth playing.

For me, it would look something like this

-Batman Arkham City (a masterpiece in game design. It does every one of its countless aspects at a high level and offers more content than any other action adventure I've ever played)

-Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition 2012 (My go-to competitive game. It's well balanced and offers depth that just seems to get deeper as people STILL continue to discover more)

-Donkey Kong Country Returns (Perhaps the greatest platformer ever created. Retro's talent knows no bounds)

-The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword (a one of a kind experience that shows that motion controls are a viable control method for a full blown gaming experience)

-Super Mario Galaxy 2 (This may be the single most creative and diverse game I've ever played. This game is a testament to the capabilities of the human imagination)

P.S. I know it's extremely early, but I feel like Assassin's Creed 4 is going to creep it's way into my top 5. It's more than I ever expected.

yeah, i agree. i has a similar problem with bioshock in that it seemed too schizophrenic/psychotic. - "harvest" or save a "little sister" who sucks the blood out of people with a syringe... i almost couldn't play the game because of this. and while the setting and environment was full of color, it was also dreadful. the story was amazing when it all came together at the end (shocker!) but IMO the person who came up with some of the ideas in the narrative of bioshock is one seriously sick and hateful person.
