In a recent interview at Ubisoft's E3 website, the producer of the upcoming sequel to blockbuster Ubi title stated that while in the first game there were 5 or 6 mission types, this time will be around 15 or 16, ramping the total number of missions to around 200.

There is also mention of a modular-type approach to missions, where one could start with an escort mission, which progresses into a chase one to finish with the assassination itself. It seems that a hundred missions will be for main plot, and the other half will be side missions.

That's amazing news. I enjoyed a lot the first AC, and thought of it that it was a remarkable, outstanding first effort for a new soon-to-be franchise, but I also was worried that the developer team wouldn't acknowledge the huge amounts of repetition that plagued the missions of the first game. I'm so happy to be proved wrong. :)

The original got criticism from players for being too repetitive, but I really enjoyed it. But if they want to give us more variety then that is great. From the sound of it, it is linking together a few different things into one sidequest - a bit like the training missions in Masyaf in AC1 - where it taught you to listen in on conversations, then follow without being spotted and pick pocketing an item.

I really think this game has the potential to be one of the better games this year. All they needed to do, in my opinion, was eliminate the repetition, and it sounds like they are doing it.

Yeah I thought the first one was awesome. I loved the movie kingdom of heaven and it looked just like that. The graphics were awesome at the time too.

I wonder if i can still win every combat by standing, never attacking, and just waiting for the counter.

If they improve that as well, then I'll be much happier with AC2, as these are the main points of complaint that I had with the original.

I also find it interesting that while in the old one you started an assasin but in the new one you have to learn how to use weapons, and you can buy and upgrade them

Saw this on G4 the other night, the producer said he heard all the complaints, he specifically stated that there will be none of that investigation crap, no pick pocket missions, no evesdropping. 16 new mission types and the start to combine to create one of the overall large missions. Also flags are gone, but there will be something new to collect.dvader654
Yeah they said in the game informer spread that there will actually be several different kinds of things to collect but that they will have an actual tangible in game boon to your character this time.

I honestly can't wait :D. November this year is going to be amazing. Bioshock 2 coming out at the beginning of the month, and Assassin's Creed 2 + Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 coming out around the 10th :D.

The missions also string together randomly if I read GI's article correctly.

I thought the combat was pretty amazing in AC. I definately thought you were alot more deadly and succesful doing evasive dodges and counters than trying to do offensive time hits why people would evade and break your timed hits. If they could make the offensive combat more fun that would be huge. I would like to enjoy both sides of combat.

Im not that thrilled at the thought of having to do yet more investigating. It was repetitive to have to do the same 5-6 things a whole crapload of times per assassination. Just increasing the types of investigations and how many you have to do doesnt help that any... Stringing them together kinda sounds nice. Running around and navigating the streets just getting to all those investigations was also a nightmare for me personally.

And I never got how you are an assassin but you run around and murder everyone in plain sight of people. And the actualy missions assassinations were hard to figure out. I never knew when the right time to attack was. Were there specific times when you could stealth kill the people cuz most of mine turned into battles lol.

Im a little disappointed in the story to. I thought that the next would would take place all in modern day. I didnt even think you would be going through yet another ancestors memory in a different period of time. I wanted to be climbing all over skyscrapers and and running along rooftops in a metro area.

Oh well I will definately be playing AC2. If you also love the combat in it then you should play Colosseum: Road to Freedom for ps2. Its kinda similar. There is timed evasive dodging.

I truly believe this will be one of, if not the, best game of the year. More vairety, more weapons, using the same method of swordplay, and ontop of all of that, the continuation of the storyline. This game is going to be great.

From the E3 videos, it still looks like that pesky repetition problem still lurks. They added more mission types, ok. So now we will be constantly repeating more mission types.

I didnt necessarily think the investigaton missions were that repetitive. The problem, was that they were so tedious and boring. I feel the game was a little too-scripted for its own good. Why did eavesdropping have to be a cutscene? In Hitman or Splinter Cell, eavesdropping is completely real-time. You can choose to sneak past and ignore the guards, youhave the optiontohide unnoticed and listen for more information about your goal or target, or youmay evenkill one and interrogate the other.

Also, why must I bumble around the target's fortress until I find the spot they want me to stand to trigger a cutscene before every assassination? Why can't I kill this fool while he's in the middle of delivering his speech, while the guards are distracted? Really, why can't this be done in real-time? Why did all of my research tell me of the most stealthy way to strike when gettinga clean kill isimpossible and the same scripted event will occur everytime? Why did the man in my previous interrogation mission implicate there would be something interesting to do with the ropes attached to the ceiling (cut them and make the target's death look like an accident, Hitman-style), when you can't use them at all? Why is this target I'm chasing through the streets stopping to taunt me everytime I fall behind?

In many ways, it felt like 2006's Hitman, and even 2002's Hitman, were further ahead of the curve than AC was. Youlearn all you can about your target, then decide on the most opportune moment to strike, No cutscenes in the middle of the mission, no one way to kill your target, and not just one way to escape.

My other main gripe was with the lack of control you have over Altair's acrobatics. Climbing to the Eagle's Nests aren't nearly asengaging as they should been when you areliterally just holding down the Rand up buttons and watching with impatience as Altair slowly scales a building without any input of your own. The parkour became so much more interesting when youwere given the B button move that allows you to catch the side of the wall when you were falling. It was satisfying to feel that was a move that I had actually triggered myself, and it wasnice to feel I was having some input into all of these awesome maneuvers Altair was performing. I would still have liked to have more input, though.

All of this complaining might lead you to believe that I didn't like Assassin's Creed. AC2 is actually one of my most anticipated games and I can't wait to see how the rest of the story unfolds. The AC franchise has one of the best premises in gaming today I feel. Probably why a few of its faults stood out to me so much. The game could be perfect if the areas mentioned above were a little more refined.

I really enjoyed the AC2 stage demo. Listening to the guy talk, it sounds like they really listened to the criticism from their fans and took it to heart. i have a lot of hope for this game.

We'll wait and see, as long as they listen to the fans about what to fix next time around I'm sure it will be better than the first.

In the GS stage demo (or maybe it was gametrailers) he talked about how they have 15 different mission types compared to the 4-5 they had before. That's a nice improvement, but it still left me skeptical of Ubisoft Montreal's ability to deliver a stellar story mode. A story based game should get more epic as it reaches towards its conclusion. I dont know if just adding more mission types is going to deliver a more epic last half of the game. It would keep the game from being repetitive sure, but are 15 different mission types going to be enough for a solid single player campaign?
