Does anyone think that Gamespot's reviews tend to be very unfair sometimes? I mean they gave Dark Messiah on 360 a 3.5 and it's a pretty good game, at least a 6-7. Also, they gave Monster Hunter Freedom Unite on the PSP a 6.5 and it's one of the best games on the console. Are there any other reviews, good or bad, that you think are unfair for that game?

The Shenmue review is pretty unfair I think. Even after they changed it.

sometimes I think it looks like they don't get much time with the game and throw a review out there. Those Shenmue reviews are pretty bad and so is the Phantasy Star Zero one. The PSZ review came out weeks after the game was released and gave it a poor score based on mostly things that are limitations of the DS.

There's quite a few poor reviews. War for Cybertron, Fat Princess, MGS Peace Walker & Starcraft II (yeah, I said it) and especially Ys Seven only getting 7.5. I'm not saying it's a prime game, but at least an 8 or perhaps even 8.5, that puts it in an entirely different ballpark. Good thing most those get user reviews that are more in line with what actual gamers think. I usually balance the both together.

Yeah, I tend to agree with the user reviews more. The only reviews that seem to be the same as my mindset are those on GamesRadar, though the forums and live event coverage here are far superior.

oh and not to mention the OVERrated games. *cough*GTAIV*cough* I definately read user reviews alot nowadays before I even consider buying a game. and i always read the lowest user score first, they seem to have more constructive critisism. if you read the high scores first, you just read how great it is, but not much detail. but in general you gotta play a demo and rent if possible to ensure a game isnt crap before you fork over the $$$$. but yeah i've seen a good share of unfair reviews.

some of the games i like that are way underscored on GS

Jaws Unleashed ps2, i think its a fun game. way better than the poor score GS gave it of 3.8

Max Payne2 (ps2) a great game, GS gave it only a 6.5

classic nes Super Mario Bros (GBA) GS gave it a 6.8..... its one of the best games ever and portable. it runs over $20+ still too

the force unleashed (psp) got a 7.0 on GS, I think they are just a little critical. it deserves more like an 8 or 8.5 IMO.

I guess some of the smaller developers actually spend money on their games and not on reviews.

yeah after they gave gta 4 a 10 "which to me its a 8.5" i don't care for reviews other than my own because at the end of the day, the reviewers are gamers and they have things they like which other gamers don't like and things they don't like which other gamers do like, so who cares about reviews except i do look at multiple user reviews but thats a last resort as i always look at the game, "like the trailers, who made it, gameplay vids" etc

No, a review is a subjective opinion. Even if you disagree with that Gamespot's opinion, it doesn't make Gamespot's opinion "unfair".

reviewers often rip each other off when they're feeling uninspired, when they can't think for themselves, you'll notice if you read a lot of similar reviews they'll complain about similar things, so if one reviewer nitpicks on something the rest of them will... it's like a game of telephone through reviews anyhow, this game doesn't look bad, just slightly dated though

Gamespot does not do a bad job with listing the good and bad points in the games. I agree with most of what they say but for some like Transformer War for Cybertron where they said, "Transformations are integrated poorly with the core action." I like not being force to change.

The problem I have is how they seem to weight something beyond what they should be. It is something small and foolish an they make it as the biggest part of the game.

Giving Sonic Unleashed for the PS3 and 360 a 3.5 was unreasonable. There is no way that version is worse than the PS2/Wii version.

Youd almost think a review was one persons individaul opinion or something....Guess thats not how it works i guess a review is hitterofpeoples opinion.

But surely the reviewers are meant to help in some way and are not just supposed to voice their opinions on a game? Otherwise, why would a social gaming site hire them. They're hardly helping people by saying that they don't like a game.

The reviewers can not take out their feeling. No matter what they feel they should not let it cloud their judgement. Meanign even if they do not like a game they should be able to point out what is good about a game and not use poor reason for a bad game like the character is the same as all game of this type.

The score they gave for Mass Effect 1 and FarCry 2 are waaaay to high.

But for alpha protocol, it so low it makes it look bad.

Yea, well, that's just like......your opinion, man.

A reviewer's job is to try to remain as objective as possible while keeping their own personal preferences and expectations out of the picture. What someone thinks of a particular game is irrelevant, opinions really don't have a place in a well written review.

Don't ever take professional reviewers opinions seriously. Most are paid off or are given incentives to give a game a better score than usual. For example, a reviewer who always bashes the new Zelda game will not get a copy of the new game pre-release date. Always look at the user score. If it's a hyped game subtract .5 from the score.

Reviews are always subjective, so there isn't anything like a "bad" review imo. That being said, I think websites bang out reviews WAY too quickly in order to be the first one to have something online. As a result, the judgements tend to be incomplete and rushed. I suspect they also rarely finish games.

I really don't understand why Monster Hunter Freedom got so low on PSP. Or even Crimson Gem Sega (which the majority of critics gave high reviews). They definatily have a bias toward more known and hyped games.

I usually will agree with Gamespot's reviews, but sometimes they are way too crucial, like Sonic Unleashed, it doesn't seem like a 3.5 but then again I could be wrong. And from what I noticed, they really neglect some games, like I think they never reviewed Phantasy StarPortable for the PSP, which is a pretty good game.

yeah once in a while they do just have really low scores or really high scores, but usually they are decent. but the lack of PSP reviews is annoying sometimes. Anyone know of a site thats good for PSP reviews?

The pokemon games are rated too high. The latest (HG; SS) scored 8.5. Nothing changed except the graphics and new pokemon. Thats is IT. Its the same stuff. Therefore, it should've recieved a 5 or 6 IMO.

The only badly written review on this site that I saw is for Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn. His complaints make no sence half the time. One example: he says a scene is poorly explained and desribes it, he obviosly just bumped a button and skipped the scene by mistake or something, because it was quite clearly explained.

There are many reviews I dissagree with though, but no matter how you try, there will be opinion in a review score. You can write a good review and explain the facts, but labeling them as "good" or "bad" is usually opinion, and so is a score. I love some games they gave near 5, but their complaints make sence, I just don't think they as bad as they think they are.

But for Radiant Dawn...much of it just makes no sence...

Oh yeah, and I HATE the "Weak story" or "Great story" ribbons. They are PURELY opinion and have no relevence.

Well it's just the reviewer's opinion. Don't take it to heart if they don't like a game that you love. IMO, many handheld games are underrated anyway.

Well GTA4 and FO3 were different from their predecessors but I understand where you're coming from. There's no need to change a formula every game. Call of Duty seems to work, that's why they still stick with it.

Was gonna say GTA4 too but then again i agree with reading lowest scores first as they are usually the intelligent reviews... If you read the 10's you get "This game rocks its teh best game ever on any console!!!".

The problem with it is that it stops those people who listen to reviews opinions from getting a game they might actually like.

I don't know; I tend to agree with Gamespot and IGN most of the time. Maybe I don't agree with Alpha Protocol, but I'm just at the beginning of the game, so I wouldn't know for sure. Seems pretty solid to me though.

The one problem I have is it seam like reviewers give different type of games different leeway. I mean that for open world WRPG they let many things slid like a hole of character face while in JRPG they slam it down for even the tiniest mistake like a few second of low frame rate and bam .5 points off the score.

i agree with gamespot reviews 80-90% of the time but sometimes they seem a bit unfair i just wanted to add: Xmen Origins: Wolverine gs:7 me: 8 Wanted: Weapons of Fate gs:6 me: 7 - 7.5 Dante's Inferno gs 6.5 me: 8 Watchmen the End is Nigh gs: 6.5 me:3.5 - 4.5 (its short, dull boring repetitive and it got the same score as dante's inferno and more than wanted!) thats all i can think of atm.

Well my friend that is the way it is. Some people like the game and some do not. That is the way life works. It all depends. Some people do it to act all cool and make the good games look bad. I know it frustrates me so much when I see things Like this but that is the sad part. All games have some good opinions and bad opinions. I really wish I could give more of an answer to this but It is just that I can't express it in words that why do people do this. Most possible reason is that they are immature and do it to level up. Daily you would see guys just spamming random rates for games to level up on the site. Well They are not dedicated enough to the site and are NOT trying to make it a better community. Anyways Hope this answered your question; ~Game

So basically you're saying you liked certain games and they didn't. How is that unfair? I'm sure there are games that you would give negative reviews to that I like. Is that unfair?

Also, they gave Monster Hunter Freedom Unite on the PSP a 6.5 and it's one of the best games on the console. Are there any other reviews, good or bad, that you think are unfair for that game?

Their is no such thing as a unfair review, people are titled to their own opinions, it's up to gamers to live with it instead of whining about it all the time.

I see a lot of posts here disagreeing, but reviewers think outside of the box.

They look at a game's pros and cons, and then try to visualize what the gamers as a whole might think, not simply just those who like a game.

I thought their Halo Wars review was very unfair. It wasn't amazing, but it was way better than a 6.

I thought Sonic Adventure Battle 2 deserved more than it got, at least a 7.5... although repetitive it was highly entertaining I used to play it all the time.

The pokemon games are rated too high. The latest (HG; SS) scored 8.5. Nothing changed except the graphics and new pokemon. Thats is IT. Its the same stuff. Therefore, it should've recieved a 5 or 6 IMO.

Games are graded based on their quality, not whether or not they improved the formula. The graphics improved, the game features improved, the core tried-and-true gameplay stayed the same. Just because you don't like it doesn't make it a bad game. That would be like if they marked down God of War 2 and 3 because they integrated the same, tired hack-and-slash gameplay as they created in the original God of War. Which we all know is ridiculous, because they were both more polished than the original game (regardless of how you feel about the story).

6 is average. We're not running on a scale of 5 to 10 here.
