Don't be talking trash about how "bad" or crappy you think the articles are or whatever in the videogame magazines. Its a shame some of them are dying off like Nintendo Power while EGM is still hanging around in newsstands while Playstation Magazine and Xbox magazine have more copies at stores.

This weekend Im going to be doing some shopping and I will be buying either the August issue or the new September issue of Nintendo Power when I go to Walmart and Kmart to see what they have.

And I mean no negativity towards videogame magazines

I love videogame magazines, if you grew up with EGM and Nintendo Power you know there'snothing like reading them. I have a sub to OXM, and I usually pick up PSM or EDGE every month too.

I feel like the internet really made the monthly print bag pretty obsolete but agree with Immortality; to have grown up raised on Nintendo Power then GamePro and EGM, the rush was indescribable. The whole industry seemed so out of reach, those glossy pages were a lifeline to what was coming, what was worth playing and who was responsible for the games we adored. I remember my favorite articles being the ones about the hardware itself, especially console shootouts (something you def didn't get in Nintendo Power); but sometimes I get the desire even to this day to dig around my parents' attic to find the box containing my early 90's EGM pile to relive the memories.

man the 1990s EGM/Electronic Gaming Monthly magazine was built thick like a phone book. Mostly the stuff they had for reviews or articles about games were all text taking up like a bunch of pages, right? Man those were the good old days.

Wish there was a website where you could view the pages of an old EGM/Electronic Gaming Monthly magazine to remember what they looked liked. I know the text was like white on a bronzeish type background in the pages?

Does anyone else read the digital editions of magazines?

I love the new interactive digital edition of Edge (the only issue shipped thus far has Two Souls on the cover). Some screenshots are short bits of video and others allow you to touch one image and then open up a gallery. I don't even bother to read their reviews, but I enjoy reading their broader coverage of the industry. Alongside the standard details previews and interviews, they go to a lot of interesting trade events which don't get coverage elsewhere and talk to a lot of people with interesting perspectives on the industry.

I also subscribe to the digital edition of OPM. It is pretty much a print mag in a digital format (no interactivity or moving images) but the images are so sharp you can shave with them and they are much cheaper than Edge so I can't complain. What do I enjoy about OPM? Games coverage I suppose. Since they cover only Playstation games they tend to cover games others miss and cover those games in greater detail. They are competent reviewers, though its worth noting I've been an avid gamer for three and a half decades so while I expect a reviewer to give their honest opinon, I care more about the facts informing the opinions.

I also subscribe to Game Informer (I don't have the digital edition just yet, one day I am going to invest the five minutes of effort needed to switch my subscription over). They get a lot of exclusives and they offered some incredibly detailed previews. They are also competent reviewers.

I subscribed to Qore (and the Playstation Underground before it) up until it was cancelled earlier this year. It was an interesting phenomena. They covered four games per issue. Coverage consisted of a 5-10 minute interview with lots of gameplay footage (often never seen before) mixed in, a gameplay trailer and often concept art.

Back in the day I was fond of EGM, Gamefan (they were crazy but the paper sure was pretty), The Unofficial Xbox Magazine, Play (the deceased American magazine which was pretty much a Gamefan clone, not the existing, unrelated European magazine), Next Generation (the deceased US sister magazine of Edge) and the original Official Playstation Magazine (made by a completely different team and offering much deeper coverage in their previews).

Some magazines were better than others, but as a videogame fanatic I judged them all worth reading.

Even to this day I still have my heavy stack of original PlayStation magazines from back when I lived in Europe. I definitely liked getting the latest issue every week because that was basically the only way to get the most recent news on everything PlayStation. This was also before the Internet became as big as it is now.

At a time before the popularity of the Internet, what I loved about video game magazines are the pictures and the information they provided. As an early subscriber to Nintendo Power (the first issue brought me fond memories), I enjoyed learning about new or existing games and most of all, information about secrets and secret codes (things that no longer appear in Nintendo Power due to the Internet).

It is a shame that Nintendo Power will fold soon and other gaming magazines will soon follow. There is something about gaming magazines that one cannot get even for free on the Internet.

Update; since I made this post, I learned that another Nintendo-centric magazine will also fold: Nintendo Gamer, a U.K. publication. Both Nintendo Gamer and Nintendo Power are owned by Future and its U.S. subsidary Future US.

No negativity? Are you that sensitive you can't be open to other opinions?

I can't think of a reason why I'd subscribe for a video game magazine. The articles are a joke, and there isn't any news you can't get on the web....

For their time I'm sure they were fantastic but I don't really see the use for them now.

I just prefer the physical feel of it. I can read them anywhere. And Edge covers are too good to be digitised

The star of Two Souls is on the cover of the only interactive edition of Edge released thus far. The image is really high resolution (higher quality than that of the paper edition) and its animated. A light source plays across the face of the character, whose eyes look around and who sometimes blinks. The magazine itself also boasts a lot of animated, interactive bits. For example, in the segment called Home Schooling the (lovely) banner is animated and one has the ability to swipe through a bunch of photos. Also, there is a 3D model of the 3DS in the Supersize Me article you can rotate by swiping it. In an article about the Game Gadget (a handheld aimed at retro gamers) inside the photo of the game gadget a small video of various games runs (the video is at least a minute long). All of the previews include links to big HD videos (which require internet access, perhaps because there is some sort of size limit on magazines) . Its quite impressive. Perhaps there is a video on Edge's website or something (I don't have access to it from here).

That sounds great! Got me quite interested in it. Now if only I had an iPad.....

Pretty much both of these points. I also like looking back on the hype of something (especially if it didn't end up turning out like they were hoping).

I like the pictures and some time they would put a nice poster in some issues. I used to read Nintendo Power. Now I read PTOM. Info on up coming releases is pretty good. Articles are rather informative.

I only read PC Gamer, Game Informer and Nintendo Power, nowadays. I do try to read most of the articles if I have time, but I mainly read them to find out the features of new games and get a critic's opinion on a new game.
