Yeah, Golden Axe is a hack-n-slash, but I thought we were talking about Double Dragon and Final Fight?

Except their main gameplay mechanic is fighting, so they're fighting games funnily enough.

Sure, but then we'd have to start referring to every game that lets you punch or kick as "fighting" games, i.e. Alex Kidd, GTA, Batman Arkham, etc.

While beat 'em ups were at one point called "fighting" games, nowadays the definition of "fighting game" almost exclusively refers to versus fighting games.

Actually I remember the term "brawlers" being used more so then Fighting.

You're right, but it still doesn't matter. Beat-Em Ups and Fighting Games are two seperate, established, and defined generes.

Fighting games are 1-on-1 or tag-team based fighting.

Beat-em ups are games where you roam levels and beat-up many numbers of henchmen, often before facing an end-level boss.

Doesn't matter to me either.

I realise there are 'strict' guidelines regarding genres, just the genre names usually have misleading titles. (1v1 would be more appropriate but these genre titles are kinda set despite their questionable identities)

And anyway, it's not like this is a reliable topic of votes; A48 disregards legitimate games voted for as well as those that blur the lines! The totals for this topic are wrong as well. :)

This sounds more like damage control, it seems everytime someone wrong I am auto labeled a troll for some reason. Also, do I need to point out that A) my scores are not wrong, I can show you who edited if they did and B) I believe I have not updated all the votes yet. Damn your bad at this, take your "fighter" golden axe and cry in a corner.

I'm pretty sure that 99% of people mentioning SoulCalibur 2 as one of their best fighters did NOT play SoulCalibur 1 on the Dreamcast
