I don't buy EA games. It's basically a boycott that I have going on with EA, and have had for a few years now. I did download and sign up for Origin to try out the Hardline Beta and that BF4 mod pack quickly reminded of why I don't support EA.

Today I was finally ready to give my money to EA for that splendid game but quickly found out that it's not on Steam or GoG. It's sold through its website, yes, but even then I still need to re-install Origin. F*** that. I'm either going to have to buy it for the PS4 (even though I really wanted the PC version) or not at all. I'm not supporting Origin.

I don't expect anyone to share my commitments. None of you have to. And I'd certainly understand if a lot of you feel I'm making a bigger deal out of this than it actually is. I just think EA is the exemplar of everything bad in modern gaming business from microtransactions where they don't belong to releasing unfinished games at full retail price, and I'm doing my small part in not buying in.

You're right, I don't share your commitment. Keep going at it and you're just gonna miss many great games like Inquisition, the new Mass Effect etc.

I think it probably sends a stronger message if you make a point of buying their games when they do things right as well as boycotting their bad practices, but I'm not sure since that basically means they can have two cakes and eat them. What's so bad about origin? My only experience with it has been through the free copy of Dragon Age: Origins and aside from the inconvenience of dividing my game library it seems absolutely fine.

You need to brush up on your EA policies broseph. EA's old business practices were nothing out of the ordinary for the industry, but they have a new CEO now and things have been different for going on a year now. You also can't be angry for EA wanting to make money off of the games they CREATED and have people use origin rather than giving the money to steam. Steam, a website led by Valve, the actual worst gaming company.

This line of thinking is flawed. I can understand not buying a game because that particular game supports practices that you don't agree with because you want to send a message to the publisher. However if you simply boycott all games from that publisher regardless of what practices that particular gam may or may not support then you're not really sending any kind of helpful message at all.

The particular practice in this case making it an Origin exclusive. It's the digital equivalent of Apple selling iPhones/iPads exclusively at Apple stores so you can't get them at your favorite retailer.

With TC comment I am now thinking about buying it again even though the game is not that good.

I'm not buying it because it is not on steam, its not that I have some insane hatred of EA/origin, it is simply because when I decide what game I am going to play next, I do so by going through my steam library and picking from there, I very rarely play non-steam games just for the sheer convenience of it, my backlog is enormous and dividing that bgacklog into different clients would just be a logistical nightmare.

If you want to play it, just buy it on Origin, yeah Origin is shit but once you launch the game it doesn't matter.

Unlike Steam, Origin actually has a refund period (of 30 days). Personally, I don't see what's wrong with Origin... it's DRM just like Steam.

I haven't really gamed on PC in a very long time so I don't really know all the in's and out's of Steam and other services but aren't they basically just like virtual platforms. So in that sense wouldn't EA selling Dragon Age: Inquisition only on Origin basically just be the same as say Nintendo selling Super Mario 3D World only on Wii U. Also wouldn't it be better to have more services able to compete with Steam.

Yup and bioware has autonomy under EA anyways except for the microtransactions. But the game itself has not suffered because of EA

The majority of most PC owners' game libraries are likely on Steam, I'd wager. At that point, it's easier to have everything be centralized than have to use a dozen different services and remember a dozen different log ins just to get access to certain games. I've got games spread between Steam, Humble, GOG, Origin, UPlay, Itchio, and others, for instance. Gets tiresome after a while having to remember which platform has what games, especially when the vast majority of PC games are available through Steam these days. It probably wouldn't be so bad if Steam hadn't become the de facto storefront for PC games, but what can you do.

I don't have any a lot in my steam library, so i am ignoring Steam. I have orign and played lots of SWTOR. I never really had an issue with Origin.

Nor have I. It's been a pretty solid service from the brief time I've used it. Would probably end up using it more if I didn't play EA games on console almost exclusively.

@elheber:

If your main complaint is that they don't show up all in one place...

Open up steam, go to games in the menu bar, and then click "add a non-steam game to my library". They will now show up in your steam library and you can even click play and launch it from steam. You still need origin but you won't have to open it once you do this.

Now you have no excuses to NOT purchase one of the best games released this year. Bioware created this game, not EA, EA just fronted the check for development.

@c_rakestraw: Aren't pretty much all games on Uplay also on Steam? I had to install Uplay when I bought Child of light but it's still on Steam. It is sort of annoying when I have to log on to something else when I want to play a game, but for that I just use the same username and password :P My pc library can be divided into Origin and Steam (honestly I've never heard of Humble, Itchio or GoG).

It would be more convenient to have everything on Steam, yeah, but Origin itself doesn't seem that bad to me. Besides for Bioware I'll go through whatever hells any company wants to put me through.

Edit: Your loss, OP. Your loss.

I stopped buying EA games after Mass Effect 3, so far i haven't gave them a cent since.

I actually wasn't going to buy ME2 or ME3 because i had begain a self boycott back after I had bought C&C 3 and had a god awful time with its securerom bullshit problems i had in the game installing it and getting it to run... but i was foolish and decided to give them more of my money.

But so far nothing else from them. If i do get weak and decide to try this game it'll be a used copy or a pirate version because i won't give EA any money.

@Old_Gooseberry: you end up hurting Bioware more than you hurt ea with those childish tactics. If you don't like origin get it on console.

I honestly don't undersrand this hate with origin, it's done nothing to wreck my PC, I never had trouble running games from it and they give me free games. Plus you actually get a return policy, something steam doesn't do very often.

So go ahead, whine and cry about a stupid hate you have for a client and hurt the devs that make excellent games.

Currently own 1 game on origin that I've payed for and it will be the last one I purchase till they either eliminate origin as a requirement or serieously change how they produce and sell their games. As I will never pay $120 for a game and it's DLC again after how bad that game turned out to be. I enjoy the game but it wasn't in a state of release worthy at least in my books up until a couple of months ago which says to me they don't give a shit, so neither should I about their new games or their origin service.

If GOG had more tittles I'd purchase every single one from them. But currently companies have taken to putting their software in a corner and telling the other kids they can't play unless they join their fucking club. So sick of having 100 accounts for various shit.

Origin isn't that bad. I didn't want to do it either. It turns out Origin is a pretty lightweight program. What was more disturbing was the lack of effort put into the UI and controls in the PC version.

I'm not boycotting any company specifically, but I will not be buying most games with pre order dlc and aanouncements of dlc before the damn game is even out. At the least i'll wait till they're $20 and have all the dlc included.

Love the example CDPR is setting, hope it sticks a bit.

@pyro1245: I just honestly don't trust anything EA puts out. The more involved they are in something, the worse it is. EA always comes back to bite you, and Origin is no exception since it's 100% them.

Except DA:I is simply a good game. There's no catch. It's not an evil game masquerading as a good one. EA publishes bad games. They also publish good ones like this. I buy games based on their merits - if it's good, then it's good

I agree, my EA scars have never truly healed and I still resent them as a company, but unfortunately they control Bioware and other devs like Dice, so you either have to deal with their awful service on PC or just buy on console, or i guess just boycott them in general, though I wouldn't do that myself, I just refuse to use origin

Aside from Mass Effect, I don't really buy EA games. If I do get anything else, I wait until it's dirt cheap. ME is the only one I'm willing to pay full price for.

Origin isn't that bad. It doesn't have all the features Steam has going for it, but it's not god awful either. EA did win back some of my goodwill through its customer service. The serial code for my PC copy of Mass Effect(physical disc) that I bought back in 2008 expired at some point and wouldn't register anymore. I requested a service call and within two seconds I got a call from someone who spoke clear English. The representative added the game to my origin account and issued a new serial through that since she couldn't reactivate my current serial. Honestly, I wasn't expecting anything when I called in.

DO NOT BUY AN EA GAME, PERIOD. I had a few EA games installed and when I installed the new Origin launcher it UNINSTALLED ALL MY EA GAMES!. EVERY ONE OF THEM. It also deleted all my save games. Oh all the games I owned appear in the launcher for download. When I took the trouble to download one (all 9.,8 GB of it) it would not install. As you would expect NO SUPPORT from EA. So no, don't buy an EA game. Chances are iffy if you will ever be able to install and play it and all your installed EA games will be gone.

The only EA game I bought last year was Fifa 15. I'm a huge fan of the NHL series to, but since they removed GM connected I decided not to bother buying the new one. I have a feeling EA will include all the excluded features in their to-come NHL games within two years, but decided not to have them in 15 so that they have something new to offer in their games in the future.

One could day I partly boycott EA, though I buy those games I think I will enjoy.

I boycotted EA games for years until they announced they're stopping the online pass BS, I don't do steam or pc gaming so I started buying their games and got some really cheap deals on some great games. I totally understand and respect TC's decision though, worst company 2 years in a row - speaks volumes about their business practices.
