Usually graphics=absolutely nothing to me, in fact I still play games from the NES era etc.

However, I just moved on to Riddick: Dark Athena after beating the first game, and DAMN! the graphics and animation really make this game. It feels like there's more attention to detail in this game, than in the movie itself.

Just now I spent 20 minutes cycling through what all the NPC's could say in the holding cells, and I noticed tiny things like some asian guy's pinky fingers moving in awkward places, because of the fact that he was mentally unstable. Just weird stuff that most people won't even notice really makes it for me.

Looking outside the window to see deep space was really neat too.

Basically this just makes me wonder what games you guys think are similar to this, being very immersive games due to the graphics.

Crysis etc. wasn't immersive to me at all despite it's graphics, but I would love to play some games where graphics actually do add something positive to the gameplay experience. The intro to Bioshock was pretty good, but it just fell flat later on.

Arma 2 sometimes feels pretty immersive too due to the awesome shadows etc.

Thanks guys, ps, would Deep Space fit into this category? Riddick is making me start to like space themed games, I didn't like Mass Effect though

Graphics can be a factor. Music and sound effects also add to the atmosphere. Immersion's personal.

Off the top of my head: LoZ: Majora's Mask, Silent Hill 2 and 3, and Viewtiful Joe.

This 'er.

My recommendation is the games from the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series.
I've only played the first two, but from what I've heard the first and third games are the most atmospheric. (The second is seeming just/almost as great is the first now that its fixed with patches and the Stalker Complete mod)

STALKER series are probably some of the most immersive and atmospheric games out there.

Ah, totally forgot to mention Stalker, I felt immersion with this game as well. Standing out on a hill with the night sky is really atmospheric.

EDIT: about the music thing though, I'm thinking more along the lines of graphics that make you feel like you're in the world. Music doesn't really factor into this for me if I want to feel more apart of the world.

Usually I turn off the music on games like these, because if I'm treading through a cave, all I want to hear is droplets falling from the ceiling, not an orchestrated musicalpiece playing from nowhereLOL

Assassins creed really sucked me in. great graphics and just so much detail in the animations and all the people and crowds around you. everyones doing something else, it felt like really walking through a crowd and having to nudge people out of the way. and a big world to explore, especially when traveling between places on the horse

Farcry 2, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption and half life 2
Ace combat 6 can make some people sick if using the cockpit view.

Oblivion is really immersive. You can spend hours just riding around on your horse.

metroid prime. the tv screen truly becomes samus's visor and your window into the gaming world. flashes of light illuminate the screen and give a fleeting glimpse of samus's face, steam from nearby pipes fogs up the visor, smaller enemies splatter across the visor, and metroids actually block your view when they jump on samus' face. even beyond effects like those, there is a fully developed world to explore. even the story is built nicely into that exploration so you arent taken out of the moment by a jarring cutscene every 5 minutes.

one that doesnt get a lot of credit is the original baten kaitos. you dont play as the main character. instead, you are a guardian angel-type character that guides him. the camera is treated like a first person perspective of the guardian spirit instead of a 3rd person rpg. the camera is still, giving the impression that youre always watching. this also allows the developers to implement some great prerendered backgrounds that weave one of the best fantasy worlds of the last two generations. in-game characters even address you specifically, further placing you in the game.

Oblivion and Dead Space, definitely. I also found Dragon Age: Origins to be a highly immersive game, despite mediocre graphics.
