Nothing on your list can be more recent than ps1/n64 generation. Also, give a brief explanation of why next to each game.

1. Zelda: A Link to the Past (snes). It has some of the most cleverly designed dungeons that put today's best action adventure games to shame. The game rewarded your curiosity as there was a secret around every nook and cranny. It also had IMO the most memorable soundtrack ever. It's been about 15 years since I played it, and I can still hum every tune from that game.

2. Super Mario Brothers (nes). This was the first game I ever played that could be enjoyed for more than 10 minutes. There were so many new things this game introduced that it's hard to know where to begin. Every side scroller of the 8 bit and 16 bit eras owes a great debt to this game.

3. Final Fantasy 7 (ps1): I used to be turned off by rpg's. I found them to be boring, with lots of talking and very little action. FF7 changed my opinion about rpg's in general, and it really didn't even have to stray far from tradition rpg gameplay elements.

4. Street Fighter 2 (snes): Before this game came out, the idea of a whole game being about 1-on-1 fighting would sound ridiculously boring. I had so many great times playing this game with friends and showing off my mastery of every character's complex moveset (complex at least at that time)

5. Perfect Dark (n64): I know that goldeneye was the game that proved that an fps could be done well on a console, but perfect dark evolved on it in so many ways. It had a great story, an amazing soundtrack to which I can still remember pretty much every tune to this day, an amazing selection of weapons which is still unmatched even on today's games, and fully customizable bots in multiplayer (which is still unmatched by today's games).

1. Metal Gear Solid (PS1) Saying that this game has a great story or brilliant cutscenes would be degrading its excellence. This game is the most perfect game I've ever played it has it all gameplay, story, cutscenes, plot twists, great boss battles, plus the pacing is perfect. It is a must play for anyone.

2. Twisted Metal 2 (PS1) I have so many great memories of playing this game. This game has some of the most enjoyable co-op multiplayer of any console game ever.

3. Mighty Morphan Power Rangers (SEGA Genesis) This is yet another game that is focused entirely on multiplayer. This game was well designed and balanced but most of all the multiplayer was the main highlight.

4. Killer Instinct (SNES) This game is underrated and if any old school fighter deserves a sequel then this is it.

5. TIE. Kagero Deception 2 and Silent Hill

Kagero offered a new and fresh gameplay idea. Basically the player controlls and innocent (not really but she pretends to be) girl who lures guys/enemies into traps (which you set up theres bear traps, flaming arrows, spike rocks, etc.). The story is also good plus theres lots of replay value.

Silent Hill was the most terrifying game of its time. Resident Evil was a joke compared to Silent Hill when it came to scare factor. Silent Hill used fog, twisted camera angles, and other things like ghost babies to freak out the player.

Honorable Mentions: Teenaged Mutant Ninja Turtles IV (SNES), Need for Speed Hot Pursuit (PS1), Future Cop L.A.P.D (PS1)

RE4 PS2- Is just an incredible game, and a huge step for the Survival Horror genre.. The game play was fresh and the action was great.. The graphics are better then some 360 games.

  1. Xenogears - One of the first RPGs I ever played, and nothing has even come close to topping it's amazing story. I also loved Yasunori Mitsuda's soundtrack, and the character and mech combat was excellent.
  2. Final Fantasy Tactics - This game has so much depth, I could easily play it for 200 hours. It features the best job system in any FF, has a great soundtrack, and has a great story too.
  3. Chrono Trigger - I finally beat this game in February. I wasn't really motivated to play through it because I had the crummy PS1 version. I decided to get the SNES version off of ebay and wasn't disappointed. This game also had a great story, another superb Yasunori soundtrack, and an awesome battle system.
  4. Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night - I've always been a big Castlevania fan, so I just had to get this when I heard it was coming to the PS1. Every time I played through it, I would discover something new. Sometimes it would be a breakable wall, another familiar, a cool weapon, or even a new portion of the castle that I didn't know about.
  5. Super Mario World - The best 2D platformer ever!:D

1. StarTropics: This is an all around fantastic game. The story and characters are amusing (Dr. Jones and Mike Jones lul) the gameplay is fantastic. The puzzles are perfect and even to this day the game is still hard. This game rocks

2. Final Fantasy 8: Enjoyable story with great FMV sequences but the real draw is the gameplay. The junction system allowed high levels of character control. This game takes a long time to do everything (each file I play usually takes around 70 hours to get all the cards/final weapons

3. StarTropics 2 Zoda's Revenge: Much like the first with another amusing story and great gameplay. This one has more action and harder bosses as well as better music. Another great game.

4. Megaman X: The games of choice when I want to shoot sh*t. Enough said

5. Pokemon Red/Blue: Possibly the only portable game I have ever enjoyed. This game was all the rage back in the day yet it still remains one of the most fun games out there.

1) MGS 1 - Greatest game I had ever played before I got my PS2 and started playing RPGs. I remember being around 9 and playing this over 5 times, not understanding much of the story and still enjoying the game. Playing it again and understanding everything makes it much better.

2) Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - first got this second hand in Quebec, only to get home to find out it was in French. Played it despite that while being roughly 8 years old and getting family members to translate. Recently bought it in English for the GBA and enjoyed it quite a bit.

3) Section Z - A simple little NES game I played as a child and found quite difficult. I memorized the required route to beat the game through trial and error and it took me years to beat the game. Never made it more than half way as a child and beat it in one sitting several years ago. This was definately my most enjoyable challenging NES game as a kid.

4) Gun Nac - An interesting NES game with unique worlds to play through. Still enjoy playing it occasionally today.

5) Super Star Wars - While not being a Star Wars fan, this was likely the most enjoyable game I owned back when I had my Super NES.

On a side note Killer Instinct was the best fighting game I'd played before the soul Calibur series, however I haven't played many. It almost makes the list.

Yeah I played Killer Instinct. It's a very highly underrated game. It just didn't quite make my top 5. Street Fighter 2 laid the groundwork for future fighters, and KI evolved it in a way street fighter failed to do.

1. Resident Evil 2 [Playstation]: This game sucked me in like no other. I was around 10 years old when i first played it, and 10 years later i'm still playing it. I loved everything in about game, and i've never played a game as much as this one. I'm currently 8 minutes away from breaking the world record for Leon A.

2. Doom [PC/SNES/Playstation]: Legendary FPS. You get to run around hell and kill things. who could hate this game?

3. Super Mario Bros [SNES]: First game i've ever played.

4. Intelligent Qube [Playstation]: A very different approach to a puzzle game at the time.

5. Rampart [SNES]: Sooooooooooooooooooo much fun.

1. Final Fantasy VI (snes, ps1): One of, if not the best, game for the SNES. Great story, amazing soundtrack, classic gameplay and for it's time it looked amazing. In fact I would say that the 2d visuals in FF VI have held up much better then those of FF VII. The story was epic enough to be totally engrossing but not as confusing as later titles in the series. Anybody in my age range that has played it will tell you something similar and that it is at least one of the better Final Fantasy games to date, if not the best.

2. Final Fantasy Tactics (ps1, psp): The game has a steep learning curve, punishing difficulty in the beginning, and a story that takes most a few play throughs to understand. But if you can get past all that you realize that FF Tactics is on of the greatest games for the ps1 as well as one of the greater games with Final Fantasy in the title. When random battles take half an hour and you don't mind because the combat and character development systems are so good you know your playing something amazing. That and is you jumped through enough secret hoops you got Cloud from FF VII as a secret character.

3. Mega Man X (snes): Took everything good about Mega Man and made it better in every way. Great boss battles, great soundtrack, the ability to jump off walls instead of plunging to your doom whenever you missed a jump. The game was just chalked full of greatness.

4. Super Metroid (snes): I am still yet to play a side scroller anywhere near as good as Super Metroid. The soundtrack was so good I actually went through the trouble of running the audio into my pc and recording the soundtrack (years before I had the internet to download it from). Great powerups, great boss fights, great atmosphere. The game was just amazing in every way.

5. Street Fighter Alpha 3 (ps1): I love Street Fighter and Alpha 3 had the gameplay and the character roster to make me happy. While Street Fighter 3 had the refined graphics and gameplay it was chalked full of characters that left me saying "who are you?". While i'm pumped for Street Fighter IV I'll still tell you that Alpha 3 is where it's at.

In Chronological order:

Pitfall II (Atari 2600). This is the first game I ever "beat" and, since it was possible to get a "perfect score" I continued playing it until I finally did.

The Legend of Zelda (NES). There had never been a game so vast before this, and I played the crap out of it, over and over, for years.

Destiny of an Emperor (NES). This is still my favorite RPG of all time. I can't really explain why, other than I just found the characters to be very cool (even cooler when I found out they were based on the whole Three Kingdoms tales). I play this game still today when I'm not feeling any of the current stuff I've got.

Tecmo Super Bowl (NES). Still the best football game ever made.

Shadowrun (Genesis). Another of my all-time favorite RPG's, I liked the cyberpunk storyline/setting. I've never played the pen-and-paper game, but I still thought this game was a lot of fun.

4 - Space Invaders - I had a 2600 before a Nintendo (I didn't get my first NES until 89 I was 5) and this is the game I remeber playing the most.

3 - Tetris - I still have contests with friends and family on this game Lv 18 is my highest.

2 -Sonic the Hedghog 2 (even better when you add the Knuckles game with it) - The first game I got for my SEGA Genesis, and the best in the Genesis series.

1 - Super Mario Bros. 3 - The Wizard, That where I seen the previews for this game, and this is the greatest game on the NES

5. Metroid and Super Metroid (NES and SNES) - I love the music in both games. I am completely addicted to every Metroid game ever created. I just love the atmosphere and the crazy-lookin' enemies that you have to kill

4. Megaman 1-6 (NES) - Yet another game I love because of its awesome variety of bosses and enemies.

3. Star Fox 64 (Nintendo 64) - I used to play this with my friends all the time. See a pattern? I'm a shoot-em-up person, mostly.

2. Final Fantasy Series, 1-9 (Playstation) - Wonderful RPGs...need I say more?

1. Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions (Playstation) - Insanely awesome. A wonderful production. I have always been interested in spies and agents, this just lets me be one.

It has been awhile since I have played retro games, but let's see what I can come up with. All of mine will come from the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, since that is the system I owned when I started to enjoy gaming.

5. Kid Chameleon - This one was challenging for me, personally. I never beat it, although I enjoyed what I played.

4. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - I enjoyed the first Sonic the Hedgehog, but the addition of Tails here in Sonic 2 extends the gameplay. Since I have a brother, it meant we could both play in the co-op story mode or competitive multiplayer. In the first game we split our time playing it.

3. Golden Axe - My brother and I also played this game cooperatively. I enjoyed Golden Axe 2, but I feel that the original is more engaging.

2. ToeJam & Earl- The original is far superior to its sequels. The original had a quirky humor about it and was fun to play. The sequels tried to retain that humor, but the gameplay was not as enjoyable.

1. Streets of Rage 2 - I enjoyed the whole series of Streets of Rage games, but if pressed to choose just one, I would choose the second installment. It has greater character diversity, maintains the fun of the original, and has a seemingly wider variety of enemies than the first (I don't know for sure that it does, I just think it does.)

I am thankful that these classics are being reoffered on the Wii and as retro compilations for other systems, such as the PSP and PlayStation 2. It has allowed me to replay games that I originally had when I had the Sega Genesis.

I started gaming a little before the NES era (Commodore 64).... wasn't very impressed until the PS1 era- except Super Mario 1 rules (Tecmo Super Bowl and Baseball Stars were awesome too).

1. Twisted Metal 1, tied for favorite game of all time. First taste of a full go anywhere, anytime 3D city- amazing experience after going from the crappy 2d 16bit era. Awesome music and Christmas theme (which is when I received my PS1 and game). On a related note, GTA3 is my 2nd favorite game of all time and was just as stunning as playing TM1. Too bad this didn't have coop like in TM2 but everything else is way better.

2. Resident Evil 1, tied for favorite game of all time. Game was absolutely beautiful, amazing, and with such atmosphere. This was probably my best gaming experience ever. RE1 is easily the best RE ever.

3. Pilot Wings 64. Entire beautiful 3D world to fly around in, I miss that game so much!

4. Blast Corps. Another do anything you want 3D world to have fun in.

5. Super Mario 1. Amazing game and the world was just so incaptivating. The only Mario game I like to this day and I've played them all- 64 was pretty cool though.

6. Tomb Raider 1. Amazing environements and atmosphere. I'm looking forward to playing the Anniversary game.

Honorable mentions:

Warhawk, same creators as TM1 and another beautiful full 3D environment to fly around in.

Silent Hill, unfortunately didn't play this til last year- I had a temporary retirement from gaming towards the end of the PS1 era (staleness) until GTA3 came out and never picked it up. If I had played this at the appropriate time and not after SH2 (one of my favs of this gen), I'm know it would be on the list (not above RE1 though).

5. this is hard but i'd have to choose earthbound becuase of how good the music was, and how it felt like as if you are in the game

4.Super Mario World- this game is fun, the music is good, the level design is really good, and getting 100% is fun and challenging.

3.Paper Mario- this is my favorite paper mario game, it has good music, good partners, good bosses, and good levels.

2.Super Mario Bros.3- better than smw(besides graphics, but they rarely make a game, its all about gameplay) the only bad thing about smb3 is lack of saving.

1.Ledgend Of Zelda:Ocarana of Time- my third favorite game ever!(next to ssbb and the incredible super mario galaxy, but those 2 are next-games they dont count in this topic)the music is good, the level designs are good, the bosses are good, its almost perfect, but its not(no game is perfect, regardless.)

Thats my list of top 5 retro games.

Mine are :

Donkey Kong 64 - Platforming games are my favourite thats why there are 3 on my list, i have recently purchased an n64 again. It is huge alot of variable gameplay and just a great amount of fun. Need to complete it.

Banjo Kazooie - another big game that sort of revolutionised platform games of today. Really beautiful graphics and loads of huge levels to keep you happy.

Super mario allstars - snes game which has all the 2d fun you can ask for, really great game, kept me busy for a long while.

Super Mario 64 - being a platform fan it has to be on your list, it REALLY did put 3d platformers into perspective, it was bags of fun although i never completed it, the levels were amazing and the visuals really set the standard throught the n64 era.

Doom - playstation only one shooter bare in mind i havent purchased Perfect dark or Golden eye yet, was fun although i was 8 at the time and would always use cheats. Quite a scary game when your 8 but the cheats made me love it, killing the monsters and seeing blood spurt out was great lol :D.

I am only 16 and have recently purchased a snes and n64 again so what game knowledge i know about legacy gaming isnt huge, although these 5 really stood out in my childhood :D

Hey d2001, I remember kid chameleon. I personally thought that was THE best platformer on the genesis.

1. Metal Gear Solid 1: This game hooked me in soo badly every day I'd come home from school and play it wonder what twist in the plot was coming up or what boss I'd encounter truly epic game.

2. Final Fantasy 8: I loved the story on this game as well had brilliant cut scenes, great characters, loads of gameplay like mgs1 I played these games in my twilight years

3. Streets of Rage 2: This game for me was a multiplayer gem when I was a kid the stages always kept changing to keep it interesting, great ideas for the stages and fab music best beatem up ever

4. Gunstar Heroes: This shooter had great awesome bosses non stop action all the way and could be played with a friend

5: Sonic 3 and Knuckles: I think if they had to end the series this would have been the game many great stages, superb boss battles, fun bonus levels and a epic ending

I remember california games. That was a punishingly hard game. I don't know the "why" part on any of your games though.

Oh god, I have to choose? So...many....choices....I'll have to pick a few, though. One game per franchise rule, though:

5. Conker's Bad Fur Day. Hard choice between this and Banjo Tooie, but Conker is the better product overall. It did an ambitious thing: make a platformer without any collecting. And it worked.
4. Cocoron: Another one that begins with C, and its a pretty damn good platformer. Imagine Mega Man with character customization. Anything that lets you play as Optimus the Dragon is awesome :|.
3. Final Fantasy VI: It almost made me cry at one point. That should be enough.
2. Sonic 3 and Knuckles: Pretty much the best Sega Genesis game and best platformer ever. The Sonic series was already awesome, but it took everything to the next level. There was a story, everybody could use the Chaos Emeralds, and it had an expansion pack. Keep in mind it was a console game.
1. Fire Emblem 4: It had everything. Story, graphics, music, replayability, characters, gameplay, challenge, EVERYTHING!!! Still love this game.

Yeah, choosing is tough. That's why I made it 5 instead of just 1.

Let me think...in no particular order:

Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past (SNES and GBA): This was one of the first games that I played on the SNES and it hooked me completely. It's also one of the only games that I can keep going back to and play each day, and also one that I know all the secrets of.

Mega Man 2 (GB and NES): This is a sentimental choice. Mega Man 2 got me hooked into the blue bomber character and it was such a good game as well. Trying to find the right combination of bosses to take down was tricky. Oh, and how can you not admire the unbelievable soundtrack.

Jet Set Gemini (N64): I wasn't too sure why I got so hooked into this game, it could have been because of the easy controls and great combat, but I think it was because of how every level contained loads and loads of secrets and were much larger than first seen. It's also one of the few games that I managed to complete 100%.

Super Mario RPG (SNES): This game was just so brilliantly made by Squaresoft that I just fell in love with it. The humor used in the game was classic, as well as the miming Mario. Also, Geno is probably one of my favorite characters of all time.

Kirby's Dream Land 2 (GB): A great improvement over the first Dream Land, the second really clicked for me. The fantastic boss battles and experimenting with all the powerups was fun, along with trying to find the right ones for each stage for the secrets kept you going.

Honorable mentions: Kirby's Dream Land, Super Mario 64, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, Perfect Dark, and Paper Mario.

5 - Pokemon Blue/Red (GB): Very fun game that really got me into Pokemon when I was young. Hell, I'm 14 going on 15 now and I still play Pokemon, all thanks to these two. I actually got them both at the same time for like, $5 at the store.

4 - Pac-Man (Arcade): Just plain and basic. Eating fruits and balls and whatever. Somehow I found it very addicting.

3 - The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64): Although I only recently started playing it, I found it very addicting and can't put it down. It probably would be my favorite retro game of all time, but another game takes that spot. It's definetially one of the best games I've ever played though, and it's fun, still to this day. I can say that it is in my top 5 favorite games of all time, which my favorite retro ame fails to do so.

2 - The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES): Probably my second favorite game of all time, losing only to Phantom Hourglass (which yes, my favorite game of all time is a handheld game.). Had a great storyline and everything, but was relativley short.

1 - Sonic CD (Megadrive/PC): Not only was it the game that got me hooked on Sonic games, but it was also my first Sonic game, and quite frankly, my first video game. Conveniantly enough, it is considered the best Sonic game of all time, and I would have to agree. Pretty cool that the best Sonic game of all time would be the first video game I ever play. Now, sadly, I no longer have my copy, so I can't really play it, and I've fallen driftly away from it. Meh.

1- Chrono Trigger (the best rpg ever in my opinion. I even have a chrono tatoo)

2- Super Metroid (still holds up to this day, I wish they would make a new 2-D metroid game for the Wii)

3- Final Fantasy 4, 6, and 7 (4 was epic, 6 the world really did get destroyed so how cool is that? and 7 made me feel like the future is here!)

4- Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past & Ocarina of Time (link to the past will never get old or boring, and ocarina of time was the perfect zelda game for many years)

5- Dragon Warrior 7 (aside from the yesteryear graphics when it was released, DW7 was everything I had hoped for and more.)

  1. Chrono Trigger (1995) - Time travel just makes everything awesome.
  2. Zombies Ate My Neighbors (1993) - Co-Op experience of a life-time, very difficult to beat.
  3. Final Fantasy III (1994) - They don't make RPGs like this anymore.
  4. Crystalis (1990) - An underrated Zelda-like game, I recommend playing the Gameboy Colour version.
  5. Super Mario World (1991) - Platforming at its best.

, so many great games! I believe we should develop this into a new topic, about the top 100 list of retro games. The systems included would be NES, SNES, all Sega systems, and Playstation 1. I don't really know how we would all vote on which games would go in which spot, but I think it would be a fun thing to try!

1. Tekken 3: Fighting games like KOF and SF got me into gaming and Tekken 3 was the best fighting game I had layed at that time and being a big fighting fan I loved the combat and characters were amazing plus the story was great too.

2. Sonic The HedgeHog: I loved the music, the level design and especicially Sonic himself. Sonics attitute was really great and the gameplay was just addictive. Sonic became my most favourite games character of the 90's.

3. Revenge of Shinobi: Well it was a ninja game and ninja's are cool :D lol but seriously the game was just amazing and really hard to boot. At points I would get soo frustrated but I couldn't stop playing becuase it was so fun plus it had spidermn and batman in it as bosses.

4. Metal Game Solid: I didn't originally like the game since I am a huge action game fan and MGS didn't encourage action but stealth. i kept playing regardless and it grew on me and I absolutely loved the story plus the main character was really bad-ass.

5. Streets of Rage 2: My favourite action game of the 90's and one I could play with my brother. The game was really amazing and fun to play, great characters to choose from and great levels to play through.

1. Tecmo Super Bowl (NES) get a few buddies together and pull an all nighter season run thru and you are in gaming heaven... I recommed everyone being in the same division

2. Ogre Battle 64 (N64) my favorite RPG (ok so its a strategy RPG but still) of all time without question.... I never get tired of this game, its in my N64 right now.... lots of cool character classes and the battle system is the best ever in my opinion

3. Starfox 64 (N64) its basically a remake of Starfox on the SNES but its still a blast to play and holds up very well... another game I just don't get tired of

4. Harvest Moon 64 (N64) this is a love/hate type of game... I happen to be on the love side... very addictive and at the time I had never played anything like it (I missed Harvest Moon on the SNES, might have to try it on VC)

5. GoldenEye (N64) I mean c'mon this game was insane for the time, I really couldn't believe it when I first bought it

so many games deserve honorable mention: all the Super Mario Bros, Baseball Stars (NES), Baseball Simulator (NES), Bionic Commando (NES), Blaster Master (NES), Pilotwings (SNES), Pilotwings 64 (N64), Perfect Dark (N64), Starfox (SNES), Streetfighter II Turbo (SNES), Mortal Kombat 2 (SNES), International Superstar Soccer '98 (N64), all the Zeldas, WWF Wrestlemania 2000 (N64), and tons more

EDIT: a few more games off the top of my head..... Bomberman (SNES), Resident Evil (PS), Resident Evil 2 (N64), Dragon Warrior 3 and 4 (NES), Banjo Kazooie (N64), Actraiser (SNES), Twisted Metal (PS), Doom (PS), Populous (SNES), Defender of the Crown (NES), Blades of Steel (NES), Ice Hockey (NES), Double Dragon (NES)

I better stop now before I get to 100 games ;)
