I actually play all of the FF games mainly for the story. I enjoy leveling up and fighting and stuff, but the story is always what drives me to continue.
When I first played FFVII I was around 7 or 8 yrs old. I thought the story was the best story ever. As I grew older gave it another go realised it wasn't as great as I thought. Still a decent story it just isn't as great as people make it out to be. As for your question TC most of the the time when I play a FF title or any RPG it is for the story. The gameplay and the soundtrack were the highlights of FFVII.
the graphics in the battles and the opening cutscene. I didn't like the characters much; too cliche. I wasn't really interested in the story. With the exception of the opening scene The cutscenes didn't wow me either.
The cutscene because of how they directed it, with the quick cuts from the train to the city. The graphics during battles were well animated and it was exciting to see FF enemies as 3d models. It was like playing with action figures vs. watching a cartoon.
that, while I dont play it every year, I did finish it 3 times and its one of , if not my fav game .It had an amazing story, and I replay every year to refresh my memory of it.

I'd have to say it's the battle system, definitely. The materia system took the magicite system from FF 6 and refined it, so it was very enjoyable. FF 7 also has my favorite Final Fantasy battle music and fanfare music.
When I first played it (I was only 9) I fell in love with the story, setting and characters. I also loved the materia system. I'd never really played any RPGs besides Super Mario RPG, so I was blown away.
Coming back to it nowadays, I still love it. However, the translation is a little rough. This hurts the quality of the story overall. This is why I think, if any FF should ever be remade (although I'd prefer them to make new ones), FFVII is the one they'd be able to improve the most. It has an amazing story deep down, but a good translation could really bring it to the surface.
I have said this on my youtube channel before, for I have made a vid on this very subject. I find "Final Fantasy VII" to be a very controversial game, yes, that term does describe it quite well I say. Anytime that game is brought up it stirs up massive debate or even figthing I suppose.
I think Final Fantasy is a darn good game, but it is not my favorite and there are some flaws with the game. Graphically it has not aged well, but at the time it was amazing, trust me. Also the translation is not a good one, and its very muddled at times that it can make the plot confusing. As for the story itself, its pretty good, certainly not my favorite story in a game. Now the gameply, thats where the game shines. The Materia system is extremely fun to play with and really adds a dimension to the game.
I played FFVII twelve years ago in 1997, and got it the day it launched. I was a young 14 year old lad, and the game did blow me away. It was my favorite game of all time for about a year till I played a little game by the name of Xenogears in 1998. It knocked off Final Fantasy VII, and that game Xenogears has remained my favorite game of all time through out the years(I have replayed it time and time again and it remains my favorite game of all time.)
The thing with FFVII is that it does nto deserve the hate it gets, its still a very solid and well made game. But the fanboys of the game have certainly given it a bad reputation though by over praising it. No matter how you say it, FFVII is a very controversial game.
I loved the materia system and how you could use it to become disgustingly powerful and essentially bushhog your way through the last 1/3 of the game. I also loved gold saucer and the rewards therein.
At the same time its also my biggest gripe. Its wayyyyy too easy to become overpowered and anyone with several playthroughs has to purposely ignore parts of the game in order to keep it remotely challenging.

I agree at the very least FFVII needs a new translation. It could do wonders with it. Heck FFIV, FFV And FVI, Chrono trigger, the first two star oceans all got retranslations in recent years.....FFVII should be one that gets a new enhanced port instead of a direct port like the PSN version. I think that would help the game alot. And I disagree I donot think the translation is a little rough, its very rough even bordering at engrish at times.
story was crazy.
the idea of keep leveling up was crazy
The special limit bursts were pretty good
just a overall great gm
when I first played FF7 I couldn't explain how much fail there was in the game, I kept playing to see if it turned good at some point, I beat the game and it didnt...history was lame, graphics were horrible even for 1997. cloud was a crying baby and all the characters were anime cliche characters. nothing impressive about FF7...people only loved FF7 because it was the first FF on the PS1 to give a "3d leap" thats why no one dared judging the game. 9 out of 10 people who play FF8 before FF7 will not enjoy FF7, they will see FF8 as a better game, why? because its certainly a better game! better graphics better characters better history. and for the record I did played FF7 before FF8...dont know whats so great about FF7

I know how these things are, and it relates to a lot of popular games, if a game has a large fanbase, immature comments always happen. This is pretty much how I felt when people kept lauding FFVII as "ZOMG teh greatest RPG eVAR1!!1!!" (minus the graphics, I thought they were fine for 1997). Cloud was a terrible main character (I mean, a loser who pretends to be someone he's not), and Sephiroth... he still doesn't make sense to me.when I first played FF7 I couldn't explain how much fail there was in the game, I kept playing to see if it turned good at some point, I beat the game and it didnt...history was lame, graphics were horrible even for 1997. cloud was a crying baby and all the characters were anime cliche characters. nothing impressive about FF7...people only loved FF7 because it was the first FF on the PS1 to give a "3d leap" thats why no one dared judging the game. 9 out of 10 people who play FF8 before FF7 will not enjoy FF7, they will see FF8 as a better game, why? because its certainly a better game! better graphics better characters better history. and for the record I did played FF7 before FF8...dont know whats so great about FF7

Can you please specify what exactly about Final Fantasy 7 was "controversial"?
Because the definition of controversial really doesn't apply to any aspect of this game, or atleast as far as I have seen, so if you could clarify I would appreciate it.
ive been playing since the first FF released on the NES ad 7 was just the perfect mix of story, style and substance.

Mmmm, yeah, me too. Since the first 8-bit adventure, my favorites have been 7, 6 and 4.

Pretty much everything. Loved the soundtrack, the materia system is by far my favourite magic system, the protagonist and antagonist as well as the rest of the characters, the setting.
I love the design of the world. Each City or settlement, each location is interesting. Honestly VII is one of my least favorite FF games, but I always liked running around the areas and looking at everything.

I personally couldn't stand eight. The draw system and summons system irratated me. But it did have some redemming qualities. Just not my cup of tea. Sure 7 had it flaws, all ff's do, but they all bring something new or unique to the table.

I think I did, but Controversial means that the game is highly debated to this day. The reason it is, and which I did explain in my previous post was that the game seems to anger people, or bring in joy. And those to views clash, the fanboys and haters seem to clash, or there is even intelligent debate about the game. Whenever this game is simply mentioned it spakrs emotions of some sort. This thread is an example of this.
As much as i love FF7 its still a clone of FF6 storywise, i could explain why if needed but for the observers it shouldn't be new knowledge.

Some people like it, some people hate it...kind of like Halo. The airport massacre in Modern Warfare 2 is morally controversial, but Final Fantasy 7 controversial? No. There is nothing in or about this game that is controversial.
If you actually encounter people who loose control of their emotions at the mere mention of Final Fantasy 7, there is something wrong with that person. And forum threads are not an example of what you are claiming. Using your logic, that would apply to every single video game ever made.

No, it causes pure debate dude. No offense but I think you need to relearn the term Controversial. You clearly donot know what the term it means. Controversial is a term that is mislabeled as that it only relates to something shocking. No controversial actually relates to whether something that stirs people and causes debates. The game sure does not have any shocking or offensive content, but it does not have to have that to be controversial. And yea the game was critically praised and had no controversy about it when it first came out. The controversery came years and years later, and to this day...the game stirs contentious debate whenever it is mentioned. People argue whether its good or bad, and it gets heated. Thats what Controversey does it causes intense debate over anything. And thats what FFVII does, anytime that game is mentioned it causes debate, and yes there is fanboyism involved, but there are also the haters and non fanboy defenders of the game who come running whenever the game is mentioned. It stirs people up, cause debate and hence it is Controversey. And heck even the gaming media gets involved into the discussion, G4 did a vid calling it overrated, so thats one example of the controversy this game. So in general FFVII is a controversial game to whether is it really a good game or is it a horrible game. Thats the debate, just keep in mind next time you say something is not controversial that you know the term. Controversial is not just exclusive to shocking and "offensive" Content!
The only aspect I enjoyed was some of the music, actually. The rest of it just felt like a "prettier" snes game, which looking back, looks more like a polygonal mess than a game. The snes games are graphically superior, imo.

Wow, this oozes a big lack of life experience with the addition of "dude".
So according to your logic being applied to the matter, Mario games are controversial, Dragon Quest games are controversial, Metroid games are controversial, not just FF7 but all Final Fantasy games are controversial...in fact, some people like IGN more than Gamespot, therefore we are on a controversial gaming site. My wife likes more cream in her coffee than I do, therefore coffee drinking is a controversial topic in our house.
Obviously the technical definition of "contravercy" can be applied to FF7 or any minor difference of opinion for that matter.
You talk about heated debates and people loosing control of their emotion at the mention of FF7...however, not once since FF7 was released have I encountered anybody who has flown off the handle and gotten all emotional if someone isn't a fan of FF7. I and people I associate with play these games, not have temper tantrums when they are brought up in discussion.
No it cannot be applied to every game. You know why? Because unlike you I venture out of different groups out, and get to know people. Mario games, Dragon quest games, and Metroid games usually get a level of praise that is just Universal or targeted towards a niche audience that niche audience usually plays. The niche is in more reference to Dragonquest as opposed to the other two, but none the less, unlike FFVII the games controversey is stemmed whether its overrated or not. LIked or not and should it be. None of the games you mentioned causes people to get pissy or emotional, or spark intelligent or non intelligent debate. People are not as divided as they are on those games....trust me I get out and I know tons of people in the gaming community and in the industry(Even know people at Atlus) and the game is debated highly. The Majority agree with me on calling FFVII since its a game that causes ire...
And justo ne other thing, perhaps I was condescening to you, but I love how you used a personal attack, and used the old you have no life routine. So dude I suggest next time you decide to debate you actually debate. petty insults just show you have a lack of argument which clearly you do. :D
