No, it causes pure debate dude. No offense but I think you need to relearn the term Controversial. You clearly donot know what the term it means. Controversial is a term that is mislabeled as that it only relates to something shocking. No controversial actually relates to whether something that stirs people and causes debates. The game sure does not have any shocking or offensive content, but it does not have to have that to be controversial. And yea the game was critically praised and had no controversy about it when it first came out. The controversery came years and years later, and to this day...the game stirs contentious debate whenever it is mentioned. People argue whether its good or bad, and it gets heated. Thats what Controversey does it causes intense debate over anything. And thats what FFVII does, anytime that game is mentioned it causes debate, and yes there is fanboyism involved, but there are also the haters and non fanboy defenders of the game who come running whenever the game is mentioned. It stirs people up, cause debate and hence it is Controversey. And heck even the gaming media gets involved into the discussion, G4 did a vid calling it overrated, so thats one example of the controversy this game. So in general FFVII is a controversial game to whether is it really a good game or is it a horrible game. Thats the debate, just keep in mind next time you say something is not controversial that you know the term. Controversial is not just exclusive to shocking and "offensive" Content!

Wow, this oozes a big lack of life experience with the addition of "dude".
So according to your logic being applied to the matter, Mario games are controversial, Dragon Quest games are controversial, Metroid games are controversial, not just FF7 but all Final Fantasy games are controversial...in fact, some people like IGN more than Gamespot, therefore we are on a controversial gaming site. My wife likes more cream in her coffee than I do, therefore coffee drinking is a controversial topic in our house.
Obviously the technical definition of "contravercy" can be applied to FF7 or any minor difference of opinion for that matter.
You talk about heated debates and people loosing control of their emotion at the mention of FF7...however, not once since FF7 was released have I encountered anybody who has flown off the handle and gotten all emotional if someone isn't a fan of FF7. I and people I associate with play these games, not have temper tantrums when they are brought up in discussion.
No it cannot be applied to every game. You know why? Because unlike you I venture out of different groups out, and get to know people. Mario games, Dragon quest games, and Metroid games usually get a level of praise that is just Universal or targeted towards a niche audience that niche audience usually plays. The niche is in more reference to Dragonquest as opposed to the other two, but none the less, unlike FFVII the games controversey is stemmed whether its overrated or not. LIked or not and should it be. None of the games you mentioned causes people to get pissy or emotional, or spark intelligent or non intelligent debate. People are not as divided as they are on those games....trust me I get out and I know tons of people in the gaming community and in the industry(Even know people at Atlus) and the game is debated highly. The Majority agree with me on calling FFVII since its a game that causes ire...
And justo ne other thing, perhaps I was condescening to you, but I love how you used a personal attack, and used the old you have no life routine. So dude I suggest next time you decide to debate you actually debate. petty insults just show you have a lack of argument which clearly you do. :D
I love how you complain accusing me of making a "personal attack" and making "petty insults"...then follow it with... personal attacks and petty insults. Way to take the high road there friend, you sure talked me down. And by the way, calling me dude is condescending and suggests your level of maturity in the range of...Bill and Teds Excellent Adventure so don't be a hipocrite.
Anyways,
Not everyone likes Mario games (platformers in general), therefore they are controversial according to your argument.
Not everyone likes Dragon Quest (turn-based JRPG's in general), therefore they are controversial according to your argument.
Not everyone likes Metroid (the amount of backtracking required in most Metroid games, as well as the switch to 3-D with the Prime games), therefore they are controversial according to your argument.
You claim that none of the games I mentioned "get people pissy or emotional" but guess what? Neither does FF7.
That is nice that you get out and know tons of people in the gaming community (unlike me as you pointed out) but what does "knowing people at Atlus" have to do with FF7? Are they the authority on the matter or something that the rest of the world doesn't yet know about?
