Maybe I am wrong but I thought the Xbox got plenty of praise last gen. Had the best graphics out of the other systems, the first major online set up and major first party games like Halo and Fable. It was a very successful way for Microsoft to enter the console wars.xbox

Gamecube. In an age where higher end graphics were the "in" thing at the time, it was left as a lagging console to quite a few gamers. It couldn't perform as well as the xbox, had next to no online component, and the multiplatform games were typically garnered to the ps2 because of its popularity--resulting in sometimes lackluster gamecube versions. Could it outperform the ps2? Some games suggest so(Twilight Princess/Resident Evil 4/Mario Sunshine), but these games were generally first party releases, or specifically designed for the Cube from the ground up. The console is taking on a similar role as the ps3, this gen, in this respect, where potentially the hardware is stronger than the competition, but pushing the console often times doesn't make sense to developers from a business perspective.
Looking back however, it was perhaps the strongest of the three consoles. It brought about a somewhat limited library, but a varied and classic one. Games such as Pikmin, Mario Sunshine, Zelda(particularly Wind Waker), and metroid prime will likely take on the same fate as the classics from the N64 era.

This and the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive add-ons, Sega CD in particular. Some truly amazing games for those systems. I agree with that, also I think the 3DO does get more bad reputation then it should , as it does have some really good gamesThe sega cd was an add-on though. How does it deserve praise if it helped run Sega into the ground? And then the 32X? It's almost as if Sega was trying to make the Saturn out of the Genesis, initially. Afterall, the Saturn was, at least at first, supposed to be the ultimate 2D console. I think I may go buy a Saturn this month.
The Sega Mastersystem - People tend to look back on the SMS and think that it was inferior to the NES, based on factors of quantity over quality. Sure the SMS had fewer games then the NES had, but the games the SMS did have were awesome. People just tend to overlook the SMS which drives me crazy. But I guess it's all good, because this way there are more games available for me to purchase & play, and at lower prices. I love the SMS!!!
Exactly... the 32X and Sega CD were poorly made add-ons on top of that. Each required their own power brick (!) which depending on your point of view, felt like Sega was trying to monopolize your time, by crowding all the possible outlets and extension cords that a person would typically be able to buy. And the fact that these things also needed proprietary cabling to link with the original Genesis video outlets anyway, that too really limited the graphical capabilities and improvements it could have had. and by the time that the 32X came out, practically everyone knew the Saturn was on the way, which would benefit from superior graphics, sound and capacity, so there was no point in buying one. It was also a high example of "one hand not knowing what the other was doing", because the 32X was being done in-house by Sega of America, unaware of what Sega of Japan was planning with the Saturn. And of course, Sega then eventually releases the rev 3 Genesis, which removes compatibility for those add-ons anyway, and the plans for making that hybrid one that was both a 32X and Genesis in a single separate console were canned... which is what the 32X should have been. The sega cd was an add-on though. I dont see the need for a seperate power brick, or some cable as a reason to call a console bad, its a complaint sure, and it could have been designed better. its better to judge consoles according to their games library, and the Mega CD had some great games, especially in Japan where there were more RPGs released for it. as for the 32X, yes it was a complete disastear, it has a few good games still. and I dont see how having a model 3 Mega drive affects the mega drive or its addons, it wasnt even made by Sega, it was licensed to Majesco and they produced it, though that matters little, it was a budget version of the console so of course features which Majesco deemed unncessary were taken out.I actually liked my 3DO -Star Control 2 and Super Wing Commander are still 2 of my favorite games -also enjoyed Return Fire (yes I know these were available on other systems) But I enjoyed it rawsavon
The 3DO? Holy crap, I haven't heard that name in a long time...I loved my 3DO! Definately a console that was denied recognition...probably because of it's obscene price tag at the time.
What did I like on it...Guardian War and Wing Commander 3: Heart of the Tiger definately stick out in my mind...Need for Speed and Road Rash had better control and gameplay that it's PS1 ports, but again the poor 3DO remained forgotten.
Another consoel I really enjoyed (that I don't think got the widespread praise it deserved) was the Saturn.

The price tag was the death of it -as evidenced by how many great games got ported to the PS1 after being made for the 3DO -also strange that 2 companies made it (Panasonic and Goldstar) I also loved my Saturn -DragonForce is one of my top games of all timeThe Turbografx family of consoles, especially the Turbo Duo. It has a solid library of games, including the first import I ever obsessed over, Dracula X. I think it was the only console that did the CD-ROM format justice before the Saturn/PS1 came around. It wasn't littered with FMV games.
Gamecube is the most underrated system ever in my opinion. No online play? Big deal, PS2's online play was lame anyways. Gamecube had some of the best games ever; Windwaker, Super Mario Sunshine, Smash Bros, Eternal Darkness, Resident Evil 4, and so on. So what if it wasn't as powerful as an X-box, it had style, and what is in my opinion the best controller ever made.
the gamecube. it had online mode, a port which makes it have better looking games than wii(only on older models and if you dont use first party on the port. on an HDTV, it was easier to develop for. it had extra ports for addons that they could have used as a DVD player addon or a NES/SNES/N64 addon. it had a port which you can use an SD card addon. i guess people had no sense in the features that the GCN had that the others didnt.
the sega saturn had the best tech for a cd based console. it had very good quality games. it was the only 5th gen console to have online. it was the first console to have a clock and an animated start up screen that is more appealing than the ps1 or ps2 or DC. it had the best audio for its time because it went through a whole 'nother proccessor. it was a huge 2d powerhouse

Granted they were pretty much failures I think its best to judge them at this point in time, over fifteen years later, on the game library that they had. The Sega CD in particular had some amazing games.
The Sega Saturn and Sega Dreamcast are the first two that come to mind. The other would be the Neo Geo, but I think that one is more so that no one even knows it exists.

The Gamecube. It was more than just a smash bros melee machine.
The biggest claim was that there was nothing on it but what about:
Wave Race, Pikimin 1 and 2, Star Fox Adventures, Star Fox Assault, Metroid Prime 1 and 2, Rogue Squadron 2 and 3, Resident Evil 4, Mario Sunshine, Mario Kart, Zelda Windwaker and Twilight Princess, Animal Crossing, F-Zero GX, Viewtiful Joe 1 and 2, Eternal Darkness, Tales of Symphonia, Baten Khalos, and a few others.
That's 22 games available for the system not counting the mutiplats. Viewtiful Joe eventually did come to the PS2 but it was primarily considered a GC game. Plus you had thePrince ofPersia Trilogy, Soul Calibur 2for cool multiplats. Granted it'snot a huge mountain of games like the PS2 was but then no other systemhad PS2 status either. You couldSay NES did for it's time/
People make it out like all GC had was smash bros and that was it. There was quite a bit more.
it did have online but only 6 games that supported itGamecube is the most underrated system ever in my opinion. No online play? Big deal, PS2's online play was lame anyways. In addition to my N64, this thread has made me want my Gamecube back, and also realize that I missed quite a few classics. Why oh why do I give things to family members. I gotta make some phone calls.

LOL I wanted a 3DO and now that you mention it I remember why I never got one.Wasn't it like 600$
Yeah, Sega Needs to get back in the console biz. The Dreamcast was such a great console--it's too bad it didn't flourish the way it should have. One thing I will say, however, is in hindsight, it stole quite a bit of the "wow" factor away from the ps2. We were already playing the next step up in quite a few genres that, by the time the ps2 launched, it had a "been there done that" feel. Soul Calibur turned out better than Tekken, the 2k sports lineup was better than Madden, and the overall depth of the library was far superior for quite awhile. It's a shame people blindly follow consoles because of the previous one gaining the most popular. Anybody else feel this way?
I'm not bashing but its a known fact that the cube was more powerful than the PS 2.It went the X-Box then the Cube and then the PS 2.
fubbal
It was, however, just like the ps3/360 war going on now, the bulk of the ps2 games, particularly the multiplatform ones, performed much better than the Gamecube. The Gamecube was notorious for murky textures.

Ya but if you look up the specs the cube was more powerful than the ps 2.Look at the resident evil 4 review here on gamespot......They even talk about how resident evil 4 looks good on the ps 2 but looked better on the cube.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_GameCubeand then for the ps 2 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_2#Technical_specifications.
The only area that the ps 2 beat the cube was the storage or discs used.
I understand that the specs say otherwise, but just like the ps3/360, where games like Uncharted 2 are tops in terms of visuals on a console are concerned, ultimately most games(mainly multiplats) Look better on the 360.
That wasn't so much a fault of the GameCube as it was in paring down for the PS2, since the PS2 had such a weak GPU in it to begin with. As such, games were either made with the Xbox in mind and pared down for the GC and PS2, or for the PS2 and ported to the GC and Xbox.It was, however, just like the ps3/360 war going on now, the bulk of the ps2 games, particularly the multiplatform ones, performed much better than the Gamecube. I think you must be mixing up the Gamecube and the N64, the Gamecube was a texturing powerhouse for the time, whilst the PS2 was undisputed as having the worst texture capabilities of the generation, most ports from Dreamcast to PS2 actually have their textures downgraded to fit on PS2.
90% of multiformats were better on Gamecube, yeah they didn't use the Ganecubeto the max but they were identical to the PS2 versions but often with better frame rates.
The Sega Game Gear. It was so innovative at the time it came out, and I thought it was 10x better than Gameboy. At this time, it was only the original green and slightly less green Gameboy that wasout. No Gameboy Advance, no Gameboy Color, not even Gameboy Pocket yet. Yet here came Game Gear with FULL color games, and a backlit screen in a portable system! It was freaking amazing! The only downside to the Game Gearwas that it used up batteries faster than Gameboy, but that issue could be solved with the AC Adapter and/or rechargeable batteries. It had great Sega titles to back it up too like Sonic the Hedgehog games, Golden Axe, Mortal Kombat,DuckTales, X-Men and many more.
